Weekend markets in Phuket are one of those things that sound simple until you realise there are at least a dozen different markets claiming to be "the best" across the island, running at different times on different days with completely different characters. Some are morning fresh produce markets where you're doing your weekly shop at 7am alongside Thai grandmothers. Others are evening social events with live music and craft beer. And some are basically outdoor malls with imported goods and tourist pricing.
After years of weekend market trial and error across Phuket, here's what's actually worth your Saturday or Sunday morning — or evening — depending on what you're looking for.

Morning Fresh Markets: Where Phuket Residents Actually Shop
The morning market (ตลาด — talaat) culture is one of the best things about daily life in Phuket. Unlike supermarkets, morning markets have fresh produce that was picked that day or the day before, prices that are set without tourist markup, and a social dimension — these are places people have been going to for years, where vendors know their regular customers by name and order.
Rawai Morning Market
The morning market area near Rawai beach is one of the most reliable daily fresh markets in the south of Phuket. Open from around 06:00, it's best visited between 07:00 and 09:00 when selection is full and freshness is at its peak. You'll find vegetables, fruit, fresh herbs (lemongrass, galangal, kaffir lime leaves, fresh chilli, pandan), fresh fish from local boats, pork and chicken, and a rotating selection of cooked Thai breakfast food — khao tom (rice soup), pa tong go (Thai doughnuts), and fresh-made kanom. Budget ฿200–฿400 for a week's supply of fresh produce for a couple.
Kamala Saturday Market
The Saturday morning market in Kamala, held on the road behind the beach, is one of the best community markets in the north of Phuket. It's primarily a fresh produce market but has a cooking section where you can get breakfast — usually pad kra pao, khao man gai, or fresh-made noodles for ฿50–฿80. Good quality fresh fruit and vegetables at local Thai prices. Gets busy from 07:30 to 09:30. Done by 11:00.
Naka Weekend Market: Phuket's Biggest Weekend Market
Naka Weekend Market, held near the area behind Central Festival Phuket (the main shopping mall), runs Saturday and Sunday from around 16:00. It's by far the largest weekend market in Phuket — hundreds of stalls covering clothing, electronics, mobile phone accessories, fresh produce, food-to-go, plants, pets, household items, and occasional antiques. This is where local Thai families do their weekend bulk shopping and browsing.
The food section is solid: good variety of Thai ready-to-eat food at local prices (pad thai ฿60–฿80, grilled pork skewers ฿15–฿20 each, a wide range of fresh fruit and smoothies). The shopping section covers clothing at ฿150–฿400/item depending on what you're buying — local brand streetwear, imported casual wear, Thai-made items. Electronics accessories are significantly cheaper here than in shops.
Honest assessment: Naka Market is functional and has good selection, but it's not the most atmospheric market on the island. It's a great place to buy things efficiently at fair prices; less so if you're looking for a pleasant weekend social experience. Think "large suburban market" rather than "charming night bazaar."
Bang Tao Community Market: The Expat-Friendly Option
The community market that runs in the Bang Tao / Cherng Talay corridor (exact location and frequency varies — it has operated in several spots near the Laguna entrance and around Porto de Phuket) is the most international-friendly weekend market in Phuket. You'll find homemade products, artisan food, organic vegetables, imported cheese and cured meats, freshly baked bread, and specialty coffee alongside more standard Thai market fare.
The crowd is a genuine mix of expats, Thai families, and resort guests. The vibe is more "Saturday farmers market" than "Thai weekend market." Prices are higher than mainstream Thai markets — ฿150 for an artisan bread loaf, ฿200+ for imported cheese — but you're paying for quality and provenance that isn't otherwise easy to source in Phuket.

What to Buy at Phuket Weekend Markets
Fresh produce: best value at wet markets
For fresh fruit and vegetables, the traditional wet market (morning market) beats weekend markets on both price and freshness. The local morning markets in Rawai, Kamala, and Phuket Town have produce that is a fraction of the cost of Villa Market or Tops Market and significantly fresher than supermarket equivalents. Learning to shop at local markets — to recognise different types of galangal, lemongrass, and Thai aubergine, to understand what's in season — is one of the more rewarding parts of long-term Phuket life.
Clothing: reasonable prices at local market rates
Weekend markets like Naka Market are good for casual Thai-made clothing at ฿150–฿400/item — t-shirts, shorts, swimwear, lightweight trousers — at prices that make sense for the Phuket climate. Don't expect international brand quality or sizing consistency, but for everyday casual wear the value is very good.
Crafts and gifts: mixed quality
Craft quality varies enormously at Phuket weekend markets. The better-quality Thai handicrafts — woven baskets, silk items, hand-painted items — tend to be found in the dedicated shops along Thalang Road in Old Phuket Town rather than at market stalls. Markets are fine for small gifts and souvenirs but serious craft buyers should explore the Old Town shops.
