Water sports in Phuket Thailand

Water Sports Overview by Season

Phuket has two distinctly different water sport seasons. The dry season (November–April) brings flat, calm seas ideal for diving, snorkelling, sailing, kayaking and open water swimming. The monsoon season (May–October) brings swells that make it Phuket's surf and kitesurfing season — but also means some beach activities are curtailed by rough conditions or red flags.

The good news for residents: something is always available year-round. You just learn to adapt — summer mornings at the lake, winter liveaboards to the Similans.

⚠️ Jet Ski Warning — Read Before You Ride

The Phuket jet ski scam — a documented problem

Jet skiing in Phuket has a long-documented history of scams at certain beaches (particularly Patong). The pattern: after your ride, the operator claims you damaged the machine and demands ฿5,000–50,000 cash payment for scratches that were pre-existing. There are sometimes associates present who act aggressively.

If you choose to jet ski: (1) Photograph and video the entire machine before you get on — every scratch, dent and mark. (2) Do this in front of the operator. (3) Use only operators at supervised, patrolled beach areas with visible signage. (4) Never pay cash without a written receipt specifying the pre-ride condition. (5) Tourist Police (1155) are your best first call if a dispute arises.

Our honest advice: there are better, safer water sports in Phuket than jet skiing. But if you want to do it, protect yourself.

Sailing and Boat Ownership in Phuket

Phuket has a genuine sailing community, built around Ao Po Grand Marina (north-east Phuket) and Royal Phuket Marina (Koh Kaew, near the bridge). The annual King's Cup Regatta in December is one of Asia's largest sailing races and draws international competition.

For expats wanting to sail regularly, the options are: joining a boat as crew (post in the Phuket sailing Facebook groups), chartering a day sail from the marinas (฿3,000–8,000 for a half day on a 35–45ft yacht), or joining a syndicate. Bare boat and skippered yacht charters are available for the Andaman Sea islands circuit (Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Koh Yao Noi).

Boat ownership in Phuket is possible but involves Thai maritime law. Foreign ownership rules mean boats must often be registered under a Thai company or in a foreign jurisdiction. This is a specialist area — get legal advice before buying.

Open Water Swimming — A Phuket Highlight

One of the genuine lifestyle pleasures of living in south Phuket is the morning swim community at Nai Harn Lake. Every morning from around 5:30am, swimmers loop the 4km lake in warm flat water, watching the sun come up over the hills. It's free, it's beautiful, and it's where you'll quickly meet the Rawai expat community.

Thanyapura (Thalang) operates a 50m Olympic pool open to the public for lane swimming — ฿250–450 per session for non-members. The Laguna Triathlon series (held annually at Bang Tao/Laguna) is a popular goal for resident triathletes. The open water swim component is done in Laguna's lagoon waterway system.
