Why Learn to Dive in Phuket?

Phuket is one of the best places in the world to get your PADI certification — not just because it's cheap (though it is), but because the training conditions are genuinely ideal. The Andaman Sea is warm (28–30°C year-round), the visibility at training sites like Koh Racha Yai reaches 20–30 metres in the dry season, and the marine life is spectacular enough that your first real open-water dives feel like discoveries rather than training exercises.

The island has over 100 dive operators, ranging from one-instructor shops to PADI 5-Star IDC (Instructor Development Centre) facilities training professional instructors. The competition keeps prices reasonable and quality high at the better schools. Phuket is also an excellent place to advance your diving — PADI Advanced Open Water, Rescue Diver, Divemaster, and Instructor courses are all available here.

The Best Dive Schools in Phuket for Beginners

Scuba Cat Divers — Patong

PatongPADI 5-Star IDCOW from 14,900 THB

One of Phuket's most established PADI schools with an excellent safety record and multilingual instructors. PADI 5-Star IDC centre means they also train instructors — which means the standards are high throughout the operation. Good for beginners wanting structured training in a professional environment. Small class sizes for open water courses.

Dive Asia — Kata

Kata BeachPADI 5-Star IDCOW from 13,500 THB

Consistently rated among Phuket's top dive schools. Dive Asia has a strong environmental ethic (coral restoration program), well-maintained equipment, and instructors known for patience with nervous beginners. Based at Kata beach, which is one of the calmer and nicer areas for non-diving time between sessions. Maximum 4 students per instructor on open water courses.

Sea Bees Diving — Chalong

ChalongPADI 5-Star IDCOW from 13,000 THB

One of Phuket's longest-running dive schools (established 1989), Sea Bees has excellent boats, a strong environmental record, and multilingual staff. The Chalong location is convenient for Rawai, Nai Harn, and Chalong residents. Particularly good for post-certification fun diving — they run daily trips to Racha Yai, Phi Phi, and further afield.

Sunrise Divers — Kata/Karon

Kata/KaronPADI 5-StarOW from 12,500 THB

A smaller, more personal operation popular with expats doing their OW certification. Lower prices than the bigger schools, good equipment, and an unhurried approach to training. The instructors here tend to be patient and thorough. Good choice if you want a less corporate, more community feel to your certification.

The Best Dive Sites for New Divers Near Phuket

Koh Racha Yai (40 minutes from Chalong Pier): The primary open water training site and one of the best beginner dive locations in the Andaman. Clear water (15–30m visibility in dry season), gentle currents, colourful reefs with reef fish, leopard sharks, and occasional sea turtles. Maximum depth 18–25m at the main sites. Perfect conditions for your first certification dives.

Koh Phi Phi (1.5 hours from Chalong Pier): Post-certification, this is where things get really interesting. Maya Bay (now reopened with restricted access), Bida Nok, and Shark Point all offer excellent diving with sea turtles, black-tip reef sharks, giant moray eels, and extraordinary coral gardens.

Koh Dok Mai (1 hour from Chalong): A stunning vertical wall dive with rare ghost pipefish, scorpionfish, and huge sea fans. Better for Advanced OW divers (some sections to 25m+) but the shallow sections are appropriate for newly certified divers.

Shark Point (Hin Musang): A celebrated site about 1 hour from Chalong Pier known for leopard sharks (often found resting on the sand), spectacular soft coral, and colourful reef fish. One of the best day trips for newly certified divers wanting to see large marine life.

Liveaboard Diving from Phuket

Once you have your certification, Phuket is the departure point for some of Southeast Asia's best liveaboard diving. The Similan Islands (a national marine park 90km northwest of Phuket) are considered among the world's top 10 dive destinations — but can only be visited properly by liveaboard (day trips are available but rushed). Similan liveaboards: 10,000–25,000 THB for 3–4 nights. Season: November–April.

For Advanced divers, the Burma Banks and Richelieu Rock routes (departing Phuket/Khao Lak) offer encounters with whale sharks, manta rays, and schooling hammerheads. These require Advanced OW certification minimum and ideally 50+ logged dives.

Diving Requires Good Health Insurance

Decompression illness, though rare, requires urgent hyperbaric chamber treatment — available at Bangkok Hospital Phuket. Make sure your expat health plan covers scuba diving emergencies before you get in the water.

Medical Requirements & Health Considerations

Before your PADI course, you'll complete a medical questionnaire (PADI's standard form). If you have conditions including asthma, heart conditions, epilepsy, diabetes, or recent ear/sinus surgery, you'll need a dive medical clearance from a doctor. Bangkok Hospital Phuket can provide dive medicals for around 500–1,000 THB — book in advance and bring your medical history. Siriroj Hospital also handles dive medicals.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket operates a hyperbaric chamber for decompression illness treatment — one of only a few in Thailand. As a diver living in Phuket long-term, knowing its location (on Yaowarat Road, Phuket Town) and ensuring your health insurance covers hyperbaric treatment is basic due diligence.

After Your Certification: Building Your Dive Log

The first 20–50 dives after certification are where you build real comfort in the water. Most Phuket dive schools offer fun diving (2-tank day trips) for certified divers at 2,500–4,000 THB per day including equipment. Day trips to Racha Yai and Phi Phi are the staple runs; join as a fun diver when a scheduled course group is heading out and you'll often get a very reasonable rate.

The Phuket expat diving community is active and welcoming — expat diving Facebook groups (search "Phuket Divers" or "Scuba Diving Phuket Expats") organise regular group dives, liveaboard trips, and dive buddy matching. A great way to build your experience and your community simultaneously.
