Thailand Retirement Visa for Phuket 2026

The Non-OA Retirement Visa is the most common long-stay option for expats aged 50+ in Phuket. Here is exactly what you need, what it costs, and how to renew it without drama.

🗓 Last updated: May 2026

What Is the Non-OA Retirement Visa?

The Non-Immigrant O-A Visa (commonly called the "retirement visa") allows foreigners aged 50 and over to stay in Thailand for one year at a time, with annual renewals. It is not a retirement visa in the Western sense — you cannot work on it — but it is the standard legal route for retirees living in Phuket.

You can apply from outside Thailand (Non-OA entry) or extend an existing Non-O visa from inside Thailand at Phuket Immigration Office on Chaofah Road in Chalong.

🔑 Key requirement

You must be aged 50 or over. There is no income requirement — only a financial proof requirement (bank balance or pension income).

Non-OA Requirements 2026

Financial requirements (one of the following)

800,000 THB in a Thai bank accountMost common route

For the bank balance method, the 800,000 THB must be deposited at least 2–3 months before your application and remain in the account at the time of application.

Health Insurance Requirement

Since 2019, health insurance is mandatory for all Non-OA visa holders. You must present proof of insurance with minimum coverage:

Many expats use Pacific Cross, Cigna, or AXA — all accepted by Phuket Immigration. Budget roughly ฿20,000–50,000/year depending on age. See our full health insurance guide for current quotes.

Central Festival branch: Located inside Central Festival Phuket Town. More convenient for central Phuket residents, but handles a more limited range of services.

💡 Insider tip

Arrive at Chalong Immigration before 8:30am — the queue builds fast. Bring every document twice (originals + photocopies). Agents report that Monday and Tuesday mornings are the busiest days; Wednesday or Thursday afternoon is typically faster.

Alternatives to Consider

If the 800,000 THB bank requirement feels restrictive, or you're under 50, consider the LTR Visa (Long-Term Resident — 10 years, lower financial hurdles), the Thailand Elite Visa (no bank balance requirement, any age), or the Destination Thailand Visa (180 days, good for remote workers).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the minimum age for the Thailand retirement visa?
You must be 50 years old or over to apply for the Non-OA (retirement) visa in Thailand.
Do I need to keep 800,000 THB in my Thai bank account all year?
The 800,000 THB must be in your account at least 2–3 months before your extension application and must remain there through the application. Thai Immigration periodically checks balances mid-year. Many expats keep the money deposited year-round to avoid any risk.
Can I work in Phuket on a retirement visa?
No. The Non-OA visa does not permit any form of employment. To work legally in Thailand you need a work permit, which requires a Non-B visa. Working without a permit is a serious offence with deportation risk.
How often do I need to report to immigration on a retirement visa?
You must do a 90-day report every 90 days. This can be done at Phuket Immigration Office (Chalong), at the Central Festival branch, by post, or online via the Immigration Bureau website.
Can I use a visa agent to renew my retirement visa in Phuket?
Yes, many expats in Phuket use visa agents to handle renewals — it saves half a day at the Immigration Office. Reputable agents charge ฿3,000–8,000 for annual extension processing. Ask other expats in Facebook groups like "Phuket Expats" for current recommendations.
