LTR Visa Phuket 2026 — Long-Term Resident Guide

What Is the LTR Visa?

Launched in 2022 by the Thai government, the Long-Term Resident (LTR) Visa is a 10-year multiple-entry visa designed to attract high-value residents to Thailand. Unlike the retirement visa (maximum 1-year extension) or Thailand Elite (expensive membership), the LTR offers a decade of legal residency with a single application fee of 50,000 THB.

It is administered by the Board of Investment (BOI), not Immigration — which means a more streamlined, professional application process and a dedicated fast-track service at major airports.

LTR Benefits Beyond Residency

LTR vs. Retirement Visa — Which Is Better for Phuket?

For retirees over 50 with a steady pension of USD 80K+/year, the LTR Wealthy Pensioner category is generally superior to the Non-OA retirement visa. Reasons: 10 years in one application (vs. annual renewals), once-yearly 90-day report, no 800,000 THB bank tie-up requirement, and airport fast-track.

For retirees with lower income, the Non-OA retirement visa remains simpler and more accessible. See our retirement visa guide for the full comparison.

💡 Phuket applicants

Phuket residents apply to the BOI office in Bangkok (or submit online). Once approved, the visa sticker can be collected from a Thai consulate abroad or, in some cases, from the BOI office. Many Phuket-based applicants find it easiest to fly to Bangkok for the collection step.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does the LTR visa cost?
The LTR visa application fee is ฿50,000 THB (approximately USD 1,400). This is a one-time cost for a 10-year visa. Compare this to Thailand Elite which starts at ฿600,000 for 5 years, or the Non-OA retirement visa's ฿1,900 annual renewal plus the 800,000 THB bank balance requirement.
Do I need to keep money in a Thai bank for the LTR visa?
No bank balance deposit is required for the LTR visa — unlike the Non-OA retirement visa. You need to demonstrate qualifying income or asset levels, but these do not need to be held in a Thai bank account.
Can I work in Thailand on the LTR visa?
The Work-From-Thailand Professional and Highly Skilled Professional categories include a work permit. The Wealthy Pensioner and Wealthy Global Citizen categories do not permit Thai employment — but remote work for a foreign employer is the accepted use case.
How long does the LTR application take?
The BOI processes LTR applications within approximately 20 business days for online submissions. Expedited review is available. Document preparation (gathering income proof, asset statements, health insurance) typically takes 2–4 weeks before you submit.
Can I apply for the LTR visa from Phuket?
You can start your application online from Phuket, but collection of the visa sticker typically requires visiting a Thai embassy/consulate outside Thailand or the BOI office in Bangkok. Most Phuket applicants find a Bangkok trip most practical for collection.
