Before I moved to Phuket, I spent about three months watching YouTube videos about living here. Some of it was genuinely useful. A lot of it was either outdated, Bangkok-focused, or made by people who'd been here for six weeks and were still in the "Phuket is a paradise" phase before the novelty wore off and real life set in.
Six years later, I can tell you which types of creators have actually figured out how to make content that helps people thinking about or already living in Phuket. This guide covers the YouTube creators worth following, what they're good for, and — importantly — where they fall short so you know what to use and when.
Phuket-specific YouTube content is thinner than Bangkok or Chiang Mai content. Many good channels cover "Thailand expat life" generally with Phuket episodes. We've focused on creators with genuine Phuket-specific depth rather than just Thai expat channels that occasionally visit.
The Top Phuket Expat YouTube Channels
The most consistently Phuket-specific channel. Covers housing tours in Rawai and Bang Tao, monthly cost breakdowns, visa walkthroughs, and regular "is it worth moving here" reality checks. The creator has been in Phuket for several years and doesn't shy away from the downsides. Their cost-of-living videos are particularly useful as they include real receipts from Villa Market and local markets. Best videos: monthly budget breakdowns, Rawai vs Bang Tao area comparison.
Heavy on villa and condo tours across Phuket — from entry-level condos in Kathu to high-end sea-view villas in Surin. Good for getting a realistic sense of what different budgets get you in different areas. The host is a local realtor, so there's a commercial angle, but the tours themselves are genuinely informative. Best combined with independent advice for actual purchases. Best videos: "What ฿30,000/month rents in Phuket," beachfront condo tours.
Several creators under variants of this name cover the coworking scene, café working spots, SIM card reviews, and digital nomad visa updates for Phuket. Quality varies — look for recent videos (2025/2026) as the nomad visa situation changed significantly. Best content: coworking space reviews in Bang Tao and Phuket Town, "working from Phuket" day-in-the-life, internet speed comparisons.
Several retirement-focused Thailand channels have a strong Phuket presence. Look for creators who've been in Phuket 3+ years rather than recent arrivals. Good coverage of retirement visa processes, Thai bank account setup, healthcare access at Bangkok Hospital Phuket, and managing pension transfers. Best videos: retirement visa extension walkthrough, "is my UK pension enough for Phuket," healthcare costs without insurance.
A handful of family-focused creators cover the school landscape (BISP, HeadStart, Kajonkiet comparisons), family activities, raising kids in Phuket, and the logistics of relocating with children. The best ones are honest about challenges: heat management for small children, beach safety, school transport. Best videos: international school cost comparisons, "six months in Phuket with kids" vlogs.
Multiple dedicated food channels cover Phuket's market and restaurant scene. Particularly good for newly arrived expats learning to navigate wet markets, identify ingredients, and find the best local restaurants. The Phuket Town-focused food channels are especially good — the Old Town food scene has genuine depth. Also useful: seafood market guides (Rawai) and discovering restaurants beyond the tourist strip.
Covers Phuket's various beaches with practical information — parking, facilities, conditions, which beaches to avoid and when. Also covers water sports (SUP, diving, snorkelling), island day trips, and outdoor activity planning. More useful for recent arrivals building their knowledge of the geography than for long-term planning, but valuable for understanding which areas of the island to explore.
Several channels specialise in Thai visa content and include Phuket-specific episodes covering the Phuket Immigration Office, local extension processes, and agent recommendations. Important caveat: visa rules change frequently and YouTube content goes stale. Use as an introduction and verify with official sources or a qualified visa agent. Best videos: 90-day reporting walkthrough, LTR visa process, DEST visa overview.
A growing number of solo female creators cover Phuket expat life from a female perspective — safety, dating, making friends, the expat social scene, and navigating Thai culture as a woman. Particularly good for prospective solo female movers who want more than generic "Thailand is safe" assurances. Best videos: safety reality checks, building a social life in Phuket, dating culture observations.
The underappreciated category: creators covering the non-tourist Phuket. Phuket Town's Sino-Portuguese heritage, the Chinese New Year in Phuket Town (one of Thailand's best), local temples, the Vegetarian Festival, the rubber industry, and what daily life is actually like for the majority of residents who aren't foreign. Great for deeper cultural understanding and finding experiences beyond the beach club circuit.
How to Use YouTube for Phuket Research (Without Wasting Your Time)
YouTube is genuinely useful for Phuket research but comes with important limitations:
- Always check upload dates. Phuket has changed significantly since 2022 — prices, visa rules, and neighbourhoods have all shifted. Content from 2020–2022 may be significantly outdated.
- Be wary of anyone who has been here 3–6 months. The honeymoon period is real and many early videos are unrealistically positive. Look for creators past the 2-year mark for more balanced perspectives.
- Visa information goes stale fastest. Use YouTube to understand the landscape, then verify current rules with official sources or a qualified Phuket visa agent.
- Cost of living videos reflect the creator's lifestyle. A digital nomad eating street food has very different costs to a family at an international school. Find a creator whose lifestyle matches yours.
- Most creators are based in Bangkok or Chiang Mai. Phuket-specific knowledge is thinner on YouTube than for other Thai cities. For truly Phuket-specific information, dedicated resources like this site will usually serve you better.
