Summary: QSI International School Phuket is an American-curriculum school with a genuinely distinctive mastery-based learning approach. Fees are mid-range for Phuket's international school market. It's an excellent option for families who move frequently within the QSI global network, or who want a smaller, more personalised environment than BISP or UWC offers.

Choosing a school in Phuket takes time. You're looking at everything from curriculum and teaching philosophy to class sizes, facilities, bus routes, and whether your child will actually be happy there. I've spoken with expat parents whose children attend or have attended QSI Phuket, and I've tried to give you a useful, realistic picture — not just a brochure summary.

QSI International School is part of a global network of Quality Schools International campuses, most of them in postings where expat families and diplomatic communities need solid, portable education: Eastern Europe, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, and beyond. The Phuket campus brings that same model to the island, which for families expecting to relocate again in 2–4 years is genuinely valuable.

QSI Phuket at a Glance

QSI Phuket is located in the Kathu district, roughly in the centre of the island. This makes it more accessible from Patong, Kamala, and central Phuket than from the south (Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong) or the north (Bang Tao, Laguna). Families in Kathu or Karon are well-placed. For others, school transport (bus) is available — see the Phuket school transport guide for routes and costs.

The school takes students from Early Childhood through to Secondary (roughly ages 3–18). Class sizes are small compared to BISP or UWC — one of the things parents consistently mention as a positive.

Most international schools — including BISP and UWC — use conventional grading where students receive marks and move on. QSI's mastery model is genuinely different: students are not promoted to the next unit of work until they demonstrate mastery of the current one. There are no traditional A-F grades for the core learning units; instead, students receive S (Success) or W (Working Towards).

Why This Works Well for Some Children

Children who need extra time on certain concepts are not penalised by low grades and left behind — they stay on a topic until they truly understand it. Academically stronger children can move through material faster than their peer group. For children who've had disrupted schooling due to international moves, the mastery model is forgiving — a child who missed fractions doesn't carry a permanent gap in their maths knowledge.

The Trade-off

Some children (and parents) find the lack of traditional grades disorienting, especially if they're planning university applications. University transcripts are provided with standard equivalence, but if your child is targeting a UK university, check whether A-level or IB equivalency is required. Most US and Canadian universities are very comfortable with QSI transcripts and US high school diplomas. The school provides guidance on this at secondary level.

Admissions: How to Apply to QSI Phuket

Timeline and Process

QSI Phuket accepts rolling admissions throughout the year, which is helpful for expat families whose relocation dates don't align neatly with a school year's start. The process typically involves:

  1. Submit an application form and pay the application fee
  2. Provide previous school records, transcripts, teacher recommendations
  3. Placement assessment (usually informal; used to determine appropriate class placement, not as a pass/fail gate)
  4. School visit and parent interview
  5. Receive offer and pay enrolment fee to secure place

Entry Requirements

QSI does not operate selective admissions in the traditional sense — the school is designed to serve the full range of expat children in the QSI network, including children who are not high academic achievers. However, the school does need to assess whether it can adequately support a child's needs. Children with complex additional learning needs should discuss support options directly with the admissions team.

Language Considerations

Instruction is in English. QSI Phuket offers English Language Support (ELS) for students who are not yet fluent in English. This is standard across QSI schools globally and is one of the school's strengths for recently-arrived non-native English speaking families.

What Expat Parents Say About QSI Phuket

The feedback I hear most consistently from QSI Phuket parents clusters around a few themes:

Positives from Expat Parents

"My daughter moved from a QSI school in Georgia [country] straight into QSI Phuket and it was completely seamless — same structure, same expectations, same language." The portability point is mentioned repeatedly by families in international roles. For a child who has already moved schools twice in three years, the lack of disruption is enormous.

Parents also consistently mention the teachers' responsiveness and the smaller school atmosphere: "The principal knows every child's name. That's not something you get at the bigger schools."

Concerns Mentioned

The main concern raised by parents who eventually moved their children elsewhere was extracurriculars and social options. QSI's smaller student population means fewer team sports, fewer specialist clubs, and a smaller peer group. If your child is highly sociable or passionate about team sports at a competitive level, the larger campuses at BISP (Bang Tao area, near Koh Kaew) or UWC have more to offer in that regard.

A secondary concern was university guidance resources at secondary level — BISP and UWC have more dedicated university counsellors. QSI manages this, but families targeting very competitive universities (Oxford, Cambridge, Ivy League) may want to supplement with external counselling.

Getting to QSI Phuket: Location and Transport

The school is in Kathu, which puts it roughly 15–20 minutes from Patong, 10–15 minutes from Kamala, 25–30 minutes from Bang Tao, and 30–40 minutes from Rawai in normal traffic. The morning school run from Rawai or Nai Harn in the direction of the school is against the primary traffic flow for the west coast, which helps somewhat.

QSI operates a school bus service covering major residential areas. Parents in the south (Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong) and north (Bang Tao, Surin) should confirm current bus route availability directly with the school, as coverage changes. See our school bus transport guide for general Phuket school transport options and pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What curriculum does QSI Phuket follow?
QSI Phuket follows the American curriculum framework combined with QSI's proprietary mastery-based learning model. Students are assessed on whether they've mastered each unit before advancing, rather than being graded on a traditional A-F scale for most subjects.
How much are fees at QSI Phuket?
QSI Phuket fees range from approximately ฿250,000–฿440,000 per year depending on year level, plus an enrolment fee. This positions QSI as mid-range in Phuket's international school market — less expensive than BISP and UWC, broadly similar to HeadStart for most levels.
Is QSI Phuket good for families who relocate frequently?
Yes — this is one of QSI's strongest selling points. With over 30 QSI schools globally in expat-heavy postings, the identical curriculum and mastery model means children can transfer between QSI schools with minimal disruption.
Where is QSI International School in Phuket located?
QSI Phuket is located in the Kathu district, roughly mid-island. It's reasonably accessible from the west coast (Kamala, Patong, Kathu) and central Phuket. It's less convenient for families based in the far south (Rawai, Nai Harn) or the north (Bang Tao, Laguna).
Does QSI Phuket offer an IB programme?
No. QSI operates its own mastery-based model aligned to US standards, not the IB curriculum. Students completing secondary school at QSI receive a US-style high school diploma, which is widely accepted by US, Canadian, and many international universities.
How does QSI Phuket compare to BISP and UWC?
QSI offers a smaller, more intimate environment at lower fees than BISP or UWC. It uses a unique mastery model rather than IB. BISP and UWC have stronger IB results and more extensive facilities, but QSI excels for families prioritising flexible, student-paced learning or who need school portability across the QSI global network.
