One of the pleasures of living in Phuket — rather than just visiting — is the realisation that Phuket itself is surrounded by places that are often better than Phuket. After six years here, some of my favourite weekends have been spent not on the island at all, but on Koh Yao Noi thirty minutes away, or wandering Krabi Town's riverside market at 7am on a Saturday, or snorkelling off Khao Lak where the dive sites haven't been loved to death.

The geography is spectacular: you're at the northern tip of a long peninsular coast with islands in every direction, mountains inland, and several small towns within a 3-hour radius that feel completely untouched by mass tourism. Here are the places worth a weekend from Phuket.

The Best Weekend Trips from Phuket

Koh Yao Noi — The 30-Minute Escape

30 min speedboat Bang Rong Pier → Koh Yao Noi ~200–300 THB ferry

Koh Yao Noi is Phuket's best-kept nearby secret, and it's getting less secret by the year so go now. The island sits in Phang Nga Bay, surrounded by the same dramatic limestone karst scenery you see in every Phang Nga postcard. The difference is that Koh Yao Noi has resisted the development that transformed Phuket — there are no beach clubs, no Bangla Roads, no elephant camps. Just rubber plantations, fishing villages, rice paddies, sea kayaking, and some genuinely excellent small guesthouses and boutique resorts.

Getting there: speedboats and ferries from Bang Rong Pier in the north of Phuket (not far from Ao Po, about 30 minutes from Phuket Town). Speedboat 30 minutes; ferry 45–60 minutes. Accommodation ranges from fan guesthouses at 500–1,200 THB/night to boutique resorts like Six Senses Yao Noi (Thailand's finest resort, starting at 20,000+ THB/night) and Koyao Island Resort at a more reasonable 3,500–6,500 THB/night.

Best for: Couples wanting quiet beach time; kayaking; anyone who needs a genuine reset from Phuket's pace.

Krabi Town — The Weekend for Food Lovers

1.5 hrs ferry / 2.5 hrs drive Rassada Pier → Krabi 350–500 THB ferry

Krabi Town is a genuinely underrated destination that most Phuket tourists bypass in favour of Ao Nang beach, which is a mistake. The town itself is small, unpretentious, and has one of the best food scenes in southern Thailand — the weekend night market, the Chao Fah Pier riverside restaurants, and the morning market on Maharaj Road produce some of the most satisfying meals you'll eat in the region.

From Krabi Town, Railay Beach (accessible only by longtail) is 20 minutes away — limestone cliff walls, clear water, relatively uncrowded on weekday mornings. The climbing scene at Railay is world-class if that's your thing. Ao Nang has more accommodation options and beach access at the cost of more tourist infrastructure. For a weekend base, Krabi Town wins for character and price.

Getting there: Ferry from Rassada Pier (Phuket Town) to Krabi Passenger Pier, 1.5–2 hours, runs multiple times daily. Alternatively, Nok Air and Bangkok Airways fly from Phuket to Krabi in 30 minutes from around 500 THB one-way during promotions.

Best for: Food exploration; rock climbing; accessible island day-trips; couples wanting a different pace.

Khao Lak — Phuket Without the Crowds

~1 hr drive north Highway 4 from Phuket Car or minivan/bus service

About 70km north of Phuket Airport on Highway 4, Khao Lak is the beach destination that Phuket was 25 years ago — extensive flat sandy beaches, no major nightlife, genuinely calm and peaceful, and good value accommodation. The Similan Islands are accessed from Thap Lamu pier near Khao Lak (season runs roughly November to May), and the diving and snorkelling there is among the best in the Andaman Sea.

For non-divers, Khao Lak offers excellent snorkelling at local beaches, excellent seafood restaurants, and the Khao Lak-Lam Ru National Park with waterfalls and wildlife. The 2004 tsunami memorial at Ban Nam Khem is sobering but important to visit — this area was among the hardest hit in Thailand.

Accommodation runs from budget guesthouses at 600–1,200 THB/night to resorts like Le Méridien and JW Marriott at 4,000–8,000 THB/night — much better value than equivalent properties in Phuket.

Best for: Diving and snorkelling; families wanting calm waters; anyone wanting a genuinely uncrowded beach weekend.

Phang Nga Town — The Undiscovered Gem

~1 hr drive Via Phang Nga Bridge Can do day trip or overnight

Phang Nga Town sits in a valley between dramatic karst mountains and is one of the most genuinely Thai towns in the region — it functions as a provincial capital with actual local life happening rather than a tourist economy. The food is excellent (particularly the morning market), the temples are beautiful and uncrowded, and the people are friendly in an unperformed way.

The big draw is Phang Nga Bay itself — the iconic James Bond Island (Ko Tapu) is here, as are dozens of other limestone karst formations rising from shallow green water. The tourist boat tours from here are significantly less crowded than the same bay tours sold from Phuket. Stay overnight at a small guesthouse in town for a much more authentic experience than what's sold to day-trippers.

Best for: Photographers; culture seekers; anyone who finds Phuket's tourist infrastructure exhausting.

Koh Lanta — The Long Weekend Escape

3–4 hrs ferry/car combo Via Krabi or direct ferry ~800–1,500 THB transport

Koh Lanta requires more commitment — it's not a quick trip — but for long weekends (Thai public holidays offer several 3-day windows) it's worth it. The island has a completely different character to Phuket: longer, quieter beaches, a relaxed Muslim fishing community in Old Town, good diving in the south, and a laid-back backpacker/expat scene that hasn't been industrialised.

The easiest route from Phuket: drive or taxi to Ao Nang in Krabi (2.5 hours), then take the passenger ferry to Koh Lanta (1–1.5 hours). Alternatively, there are direct ferries from Ao Por Grand Marina in Phuket during high season. Long Khao Beach and Klong Dao Beach in the north are the most accessible; Bamboo Bay in the south is more remote and beautiful.

Best for: 3-day weekends; diving; couples who want genuinely slow travel; contrast with Phuket's pace.

Insider Tip: The best weekend trips from Phuket are midweek-adjacent — leave Friday evening or very early Saturday and return Sunday evening. The islands are noticeably quieter than the Friday afternoon rush that hits them. Koh Yao Noi in particular is transformatively peaceful if you avoid the Saturday morning tourist surge.

Weekend Trips from Phuket: FAQ

What are the best weekend getaways from Phuket?
Koh Yao Noi (30 min speedboat — peaceful and beautiful), Krabi Town (1.5 hr ferry — great food), Khao Lak (1 hr north by car — diving, calm beaches), Phang Nga Town (1 hr drive — authentic Thai town and stunning bay), and Koh Lanta (3–4 hrs for longer weekends).
How do you get from Phuket to Koh Yao Noi?
Speedboat or ferry from Bang Rong Pier in north Phuket. Speedboat takes 30 minutes (~300 THB), regular ferry takes 45–60 minutes (~100–200 THB). Services run throughout the day.
Is Krabi easy to reach from Phuket for a weekend?
Very easy. Ferry from Rassada Pier (Phuket Town) takes 1.5–2 hours and costs 350–500 THB. There are also flights (30 min, from ~500 THB one-way) and a 2.5-hour drive option. One of the most popular weekend trips for Phuket expats.
What is Khao Lak like compared to Phuket?
Quieter, less developed, much more peaceful. Better for families and divers. About 1 hour north of Phuket Airport. Prices are generally lower. The Similan Islands (world-class diving) are accessed from here, season November to May.
Can you do a day trip to Phang Nga Bay from Phuket?
Yes — it's about 1 hour by car. But staying overnight in Phang Nga Town gives a much more authentic experience. The day-trip boat tours from Phuket to James Bond Island are popular but crowded — going independently from Phang Nga Town is significantly better.
