Getting certified to scuba dive in Phuket is one of those things that makes perfect sense and that many expats put off for years before finally doing it. The Andaman Sea is exceptional diving territory — the Similan Islands consistently rank among the world's top 10 dive sites, you can dive with whale sharks (seasonally), and the water is warm year-round. If you're going to live on a tropical island, you should probably learn to breathe underwater.

This guide covers everything you need to know about getting your Open Water (or advanced) scuba certification in Phuket — and answers the question everyone asks: SSI or PADI?

SSI vs PADI: The Honest Answer

This is the question every new diver asks, and the honest answer is: it doesn't matter much. Both SSI (Scuba Schools International) and PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) certifications are globally recognised, accepted at dive shops worldwide, and lead to equivalent skill levels at each certification tier. A PADI Open Water card gets you into the same dives as an SSI Open Water card — everywhere in the world, including Phuket.

PADI

  • World's largest dive training agency
  • Very standardised course structure globally
  • Online e-learning system (eLearning) excellent
  • Recognised everywhere in the world
  • Slightly higher price in many Phuket schools
  • Certification card issued quickly (days)

SSI

  • Second largest dive agency globally
  • Often slightly more flexible pacing
  • Digital certification (MySSI app)
  • Recognised everywhere in the world
  • Often marginally cheaper in Phuket
  • Digital card available immediately

The real determinant of your course quality is the instructor and dive school — not the agency. One excellent SSI instructor at a Chalong-based school will give you a fundamentally better experience than a mediocre PADI instructor at a tourist-strip shop in Patong. Choose based on school reputation and instructor reviews, not the logo on the certification card.

Scuba Diving Certification Levels in Phuket

Both PADI and SSI use comparable course structures. Here's what the main levels mean in practical terms:

Open Water (Beginner) — The One Most People Start With

Open Water is the entry-level certification that allows you to dive to 18 metres (PADI) or 20 metres (SSI) with another certified diver. The course covers theory (how scuba equipment works, diving physics, safety procedures), confined water skills (pool or shallow enclosed bay), and 4 open water dives in the sea. In Phuket, the open water dives are usually conducted at Racha Yai Island, which is a beautiful 45-minute boat ride from Chalong and genuinely good diving — a good motivator to finish the course.

Duration in Phuket: 3–4 days. You can do the online theory in advance (strongly recommended) to reduce classroom time.

Advanced Open Water — The Upgrade Most People Want

PADI Advanced Open Water or SSI Advanced Adventurer allows you to dive to 30 metres and completes 5 "adventure dives" in speciality areas (deep, navigation, night diving, wreck, buoyancy, etc.). It's a 2-day course adding 5 dives. If you're serious about diving in Phuket, getting your Advanced certification means you can access most of the best dive sites (King Cruiser wreck, Shark Point's best depth zones, parts of the Similan Islands).

Rescue Diver and Divemaster

Rescue Diver is the next step after Advanced Open Water, and Divemaster is the first professional-level qualification. Both are available in Phuket. Divemaster courses are popular among expats who want to work on dive boats or simply become serious recreational divers — the Divemaster qualification includes extensive dive theory and practicum. A Divemaster course typically takes 6–12 weeks and costs 25,000–45,000 THB depending on the school and how quickly you complete requirements.

Diving Insurance for Expats in Phuket

Scuba diving injuries — decompression sickness especially — require specific medical treatment. Hyperbaric (recompression) chambers are available in Phuket, but treatment is expensive without coverage. Cigna's expat health plans cover scuba diving-related injuries and emergency treatment at Bangkok Hospital Phuket.

Best Dive Schools in Phuket

Phuket has dozens of dive shops ranging from professional operations with full safety systems to fly-by-night operations targeting tourist foot traffic. The following are consistently recommended by the Phuket expat and diving community:

Dive Asia (Kata / Chalong)

One of Phuket's longest-established dive shops with a solid reputation for professional instruction and small class sizes. PADI Five Star IDC Centre. Their Kata Beach shop is convenient for south Phuket expats; the Chalong branch is better for boat dive access. Consistently well-reviewed for instructor quality and equipment maintenance.

Sea Fun Divers (Multiple Locations)

A larger operation with multiple Phuket locations (Kata, Karon, Rawai, Chalong). PADI Five Star. Good for liveaboard trip booking alongside certification courses. Larger fleet means more regular departures to popular sites.

Phuket Scuba Club (Rawai area)

A smaller, more intimate operation popular with Rawai/Nai Harn area expats. SSI-affiliated. Known for smaller class sizes and a non-touristy atmosphere. Good for adults learning at a measured pace.

Scubacat Divers (Chalong)

Specialises in liveaboard trips to the Similan Islands and day trips from Chalong. Established operation with experienced instructors. Good choice if you want to combine your certification with the intention of doing liveaboard trips to the Similans in the same season.

Before You Book: Practical Checklist

  • Complete the medical questionnaire honestly: Scuba diving has specific medical contraindications. If you have heart conditions, uncontrolled asthma, inner ear issues, or you're pregnant, you'll need medical clearance. Bangkok Hospital Phuket offers dive medicals.
  • Do the theory online first: Both PADI eLearning and SSI's digital training platform allow you to complete the academic portion before arriving. This saves 6–8 hours of classroom time and lets you focus on in-water training when at the dive school.
  • Ask about student-to-instructor ratio: Reputable schools maintain a maximum 4:1 student-to-instructor ratio in open water. Some tourist operations squeeze in 8–10 students with one instructor. Non-negotiable from a safety perspective.
  • Check equipment: Ask when equipment was last serviced. Regulators and BCDs (buoyancy control devices) should have annual service stickers. The equipment doesn't need to be new, but it needs to be maintained.
  • Reef-safe sunscreen: If you're wearing sunscreen, use reef-safe varieties. Standard sunscreen bleaches coral — and you're paying to dive on a reef ecosystem. Be part of preserving it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Phuket a good place to learn to scuba dive?
Yes — Phuket is one of the best places in Asia to get certified. The Andaman Sea has excellent visibility (15–30m), warm water year-round (27–30°C), and dozens of professional dive schools. The Similan Islands and Racha Islands provide world-class dive training environments.
How long does a PADI Open Water course take in Phuket?
Typically 3–4 days: online theory (6–8 hours, done in advance), pool/confined water sessions (half day), and 4 open water dives across 2 days at sea. Pre-completing the eLearning module significantly reduces total course time.
SSI or PADI — which is better in Phuket?
Both are equally recognised worldwide. Your choice should be based on which Phuket dive school you prefer, not the certification agency. Both SSI Open Water and PADI Open Water produce identically qualified divers.
How much does a scuba diving course cost in Phuket?
PADI Open Water costs approximately 12,000–16,000 THB including materials, pool sessions, and 4 open water dives. SSI Open Water is similar at 10,000–15,000 THB. Equipment rental is usually included in course packages.
What is the best dive site near Phuket?
The Similan Islands are widely regarded as world-class. For day trips from Chalong Pier, Racha Yai offers excellent training conditions and Shark Point has resident leopard sharks. King Cruiser Wreck is outstanding for Advanced Open Water divers.
Can I dive in Phuket during monsoon season?
The Similan Islands close May–October. West coast visibility degrades June–September. Some diving continues at east-coast sites and Racha Islands during monsoon but is significantly less impressive than high season. Best diving is November–April.
Do I need a medical certificate for scuba diving in Phuket?
You'll complete a medical questionnaire. Flagged conditions (heart, asthma, diabetes, recent surgery) require a doctor's sign-off. Bangkok Hospital Phuket offers dive medicals. Most healthy adults have no issues.
Are there liveaboard diving trips from Phuket?
Yes — Phuket is one of Asia's main liveaboard hubs. Trips to the Similan Islands, Surin Islands, and Burma Banks depart regularly from Chalong Pier. 3-night Similan liveaboards start around 18,000 THB.
What dive shops are near Chalong Pier in Phuket?
Several established operators are near Chalong Pier: Dive Asia, Sea Fun Divers, and Scubacat are long-established operations in the Chalong/Rawai area. Chalong is the main departure point for boat dives throughout southern Phuket.
