Phuket is built for rooftop bars. An island with a west coast facing the Andaman Sea, sunsets that turn the sky orange and pink from about 18:15 for six months of the year, and a consistent supply of warm evenings where sitting outside with a drink is exactly what you want to be doing. The island has enough elevated dining and drinking options to keep this going indefinitely — the challenge is working out which views justify the premium pricing and which are just expensive drinks in an uninspiring setting.
This is the honest guide: where the sunset views are genuinely worth it, which areas have the most options, and what you should expect to pay.
Rooftop Bars in Phuket: Quick Facts
The Geography of Phuket Sunset Bars
Understanding Phuket's geography is essential for rooftop bar planning. The island faces west toward the Andaman Sea, which means the best sunset views are from the west coast — Surin, Bang Tao, Kamala, Kata, Karon and Patong all face west. The east coast (Phuket Town, Chalong) faces east and gets beautiful morning light but no sunset views over water.
This means: if you live in Rawai or Nai Harn in the south, the island curves enough that you get partial sunset views but not the classic Andaman horizon. If you live in Bang Tao or Surin, you are in the optimal sunset zone. Phuket Town rooftop bars offer views over the city and surrounding hills — different and atmospheric, but not the ocean sunset experience.
Best Rooftop Bar Areas in Phuket
Surin and Kamala: The Best Sunset Views
The rooftop bars and elevated restaurants along the Surin Beach road and in Kamala offer the most direct sunset views over the Andaman Sea. The terrain here puts you slightly elevated above the beach, giving genuine horizon sight lines without obstruction. The golden hour light in this zone — particularly from October to March when the sky is clear — is spectacular in a way that justifies the price premium.
Surin in particular has several elevated dining options on the beach road hillside with unobstructed west-facing views. Cocktails here run 350–600 THB but the view quality is genuine. Arrive 30–45 minutes before sunset to secure a good spot, particularly at weekends in the high season (December to February).
Bang Tao: Resort Rooftop Experience
Bang Tao's elevated bars are mostly within resort properties — Laguna's pool-facing terraces, hotel rooftop bars along the beach access roads. These are high-quality operations: good cocktails, professional service and consistent quality. They are slightly inland compared to Surin and Kamala, which means the view is beach rather than open ocean in some cases, but the sunset light still hits beautifully.
Expect to pay 350–700 THB for cocktails at resort rooftop bars in Bang Tao. Some have minimum spend requirements on weekends. Check before visiting. For more on the Bang Tao area, see our Bang Tao and Laguna area guide.
Phuket Town: City Views and Old Quarter Atmosphere
Phuket Town's rooftop bars are different in character — views over the Sino-Portuguese old quarter, the hills surrounding the town, and on clear days the distant Phang Nga Bay. This is not a sunset-over-the-ocean experience, but it is atmospheric and often more affordable than the beach area options.
The old quarter has a handful of rooftop terraces on converted shophouses and small hotels. These work particularly well in the early evening when the temperature drops and the old town streets below take on a different atmosphere. Cocktails here run 250–450 THB — good value relative to the experience.
| Area | View Type | Cocktail Price | Best Season |
|---|---|---|---|
| Surin / Kamala | Andaman Sea sunset | 350–600 THB | Oct–Apr (clearest sky) |
| Bang Tao / Laguna | Beach and pool | 350–700 THB | Year-round |
| Phuket Town | Old city and hills | 250–450 THB | Year-round |
| Kata / Karon hillside | Bay and bay panorama | 300–550 THB | Oct–Apr |
| Patong | Bay but tourist-facing | 300–500 THB | Skip for quality |
Kata and Karon: Hillside Panoramas
The road between Kata and Karon offers some of the island's most dramatic hillside viewpoints, and a couple of restaurants and bars have capitalised on these with elevated terraces. The bay panoramas here — looking out over Kata Bay or down the coast towards Karon — are genuinely impressive at sunset. Less polished than Surin but often better value and with a less-touristy feel.
Rooftop Bars During Rainy Season
Phuket's rainy season (May to October) creates complications for rooftop bars. Afternoon thunderstorms are frequent, and open-air rooftops can get drenched in minutes. The better rooftop bars have covered sections or can quickly erect covers when rain appears — ask when you arrive whether there is covered seating available.
The benefit of rainy season rooftop drinking: after a storm passes (usually by 17:30–18:00), the air is clear, the sky is dramatic and the sunset light through post-storm clouds can be extraordinary. Some of the best sunsets I have seen in six years in Phuket have been in the wet season when the cloud formations were spectacular. The crowds are also smaller and the staff are more attentive.

For rooftop sunset experiences, the drink order matters less than the timing — but a few suggestions for the occasion. Aperol spritz has become almost the default Phuket sunset drink, and there is a reason: the orange colour complements the sunset light beautifully and it is an easy, reliably good drink at most bars. A well-made mai tai or a local Thai rum sour with fresh lime is also excellent.
Avoid complex cocktails at rooftop bars that are primarily known for their views rather than their bartending. If the bar is primarily marketing its sunset view, the cocktail program is secondary. Order something simple and reliable, enjoy the view, and save the craft cocktail exploration for the Phuket Town old quarter spots.

Our Honest Verdict
Phuket rooftop bars are genuinely worth doing — the island's sunset quality is exceptional and the west coast has enough good options to make this a real part of island life rather than a one-time tourist experience. The key is pairing the right bar with your expectations: if you want a true craft cocktail experience, go to Phuket Town. If you want a spectacular sunset with a decent drink, go to Surin or Kamala at the right time.
