If you'd told me before I moved to Phuket that I'd be spending Sunday mornings dropping to 20 metres on a single breath, surrounded by sea turtles and bumphead parrotfish, I'd have raised an eyebrow. But Phuket has that effect on people. The island's freediving community has grown significantly, and the conditions here — warm water, rich marine life, and some genuinely excellent instructors — make it one of the best places in the world to learn the sport.
Freediving is the discipline of diving underwater on a single breath — no scuba tank, no equipment beyond fins, mask, and a wetsuit. It's meditative, physically demanding in a specific way, and offers a different relationship with the ocean than scuba diving does. Many long-term Phuket expats who originally scuba dived have switched to freediving for its simplicity and the unique experience of moving through the water in silence.
This guide covers where to learn, the best spots to dive near Phuket, course costs in 2026, and the critical safety principles you need to know.
Why Phuket is Great for Freediving
The Andaman Sea around Phuket has several qualities that make it particularly good for freediving:
- Water temperature: 28–31°C year-round — warm enough that beginners don't need thick wetsuits, and body relaxation (crucial for breath holds) is easier in warm water.
- Visibility: 10–30+ metres at the best sites (Koh Racha, Similan Islands). Good visibility is both safer and more enjoyable for freediving.
- Marine life: Sea turtles, reef sharks, leopard sharks, manta rays at cleaning stations, huge groupers, schools of bumphead parrotfish. Phuket's underwater life is exceptional.
- Instructor quality: Several world-class instructors are based in Phuket full-time, attracted by the conditions and the year-round visitor flow.
- Range of depths: Sites accessible from Chalong Pier offer everything from 5-metre reef walls for beginners to 30+ metre drops for advanced divers.
Freediving Courses in Phuket: What's Available
AIDA Courses (Association Internationale pour le Développement de l'Apnée)
AIDA is the primary international freediving certification system. Courses progress from AIDA1 (pool-based intro) through AIDA4 (advanced open water performance). Most Phuket expats start with AIDA2.
SSI Freediving Courses
SSI (Scuba Schools International) also offers a well-regarded freediving programme. Many Phuket operators are dual-certified for both AIDA and SSI. The programmes are comparable in content and recognition.
| Course | Level | Duration | Cost (THB) | Depth Target |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AIDA1 / SSI Level 1 | Introduction | 1 day (pool) | 3,500–5,000 THB | Pool static only |
| AIDA2 / SSI Level 2 | Beginner | 2 days | 8,000–12,000 THB | 20m open water |
| AIDA3 / SSI Level 3 | Intermediate | 3–4 days | 12,000–18,000 THB | 30m open water |
| AIDA4 / SSI Level 4 | Advanced | 5+ days | 18,000–30,000 THB | 40m+ performance |
| Rescue Freediver | Safety | 2 days | 7,000–10,000 THB | N/A — technique focus |

Recommended Freediving Operators in Phuket
One of Phuket's most established freediving schools — operating from Chalong with regular trips to Koh Racha and Koh Hei. Excellent instructor team, strong safety protocols, and a welcoming atmosphere for beginners. Their AIDA2 course is a great starting point and consistently earns positive reviews from expat students. Regular fun dives for certified freedivers.
AIDA-focused school with experienced French and international instructors. Particularly strong on technique coaching and breath work theory. Popular with expats who want to develop serious technique rather than just collect certification cards. Also runs freediving yoga classes combining breathwork with asana practice — unusual and effective.
Combined scuba and freediving centre with AIDA/SSI certification for both disciplines. Good option if you want to try freediving for a day before committing to a full course. Their intro sessions are well-structured for complete beginners. Kata's proximity to Koh Racha via speedboat makes logistics easy.
Best Freediving Spots Accessible from Phuket
Koh Racha Yai — The Crown Jewel
Approximately 45 minutes by speedboat from Chalong Pier, Koh Racha Yai is consistently rated the best day-trip freediving destination in the Phuket region. Crystal water visibility (often 20–30m), diverse marine life (turtles, reef sharks, leopard sharks, rays), and multiple depth profiles for all skill levels. Bungalow Bay at the north end is a favourite for beginners; the west coast wall has deeper sections for AIDA3+ freedivers. Water temperature year-round 28–30°C. Best visited November–April for calmest sea conditions.
Koh Hei (Coral Island) — Easy Access
Only 25 minutes from Chalong, Koh Hei (also called Coral Island) offers good beginner-level freediving: clear water, 8–18m depths, colourful coral gardens. Less dramatic than Racha but more accessible and good for practising skills after completing a course. Longboats and speedboats depart Chalong Pier daily.
Anemone Reef — Intermediate Highlight
A seamount approximately 1.5 hours from Chalong covered in anemones and typically home to a resident school of barracuda and occasional bull sharks at depth. Best for AIDA3+ certified freedivers. Spectacular when visibility is good. Combined trips with Shark Point are offered by most operators.
King Cruiser Wreck — Advanced Freedivers
A 85-metre ferry that sank in 1997 and now sits at 30+ metres. An outstanding freediving site for AIDA3+ divers — descending through the deck levels on a single breath in the presence of lionfish, moray eels, and huge groupers is an experience that stays with you. Requires confidence and proper qualification.
Similan Islands — Day-Trip Highlight
The Similan Islands (approximately 2.5 hours north of Phuket by speedboat) are World Heritage-level dive sites and the best visibility in the region (often 30m+). Day trips are possible but long; liveaboard trips are recommended to maximise dive time. AIDA-level qualification recommended as depths and conditions vary. Seasonal: open December–April only.
⚠️ Freediving Safety: Never Dive Alone
Shallow water blackout (SWB) — loss of consciousness on ascent from depth — is the primary risk in freediving. It is manageable with proper training and the buddy system, but it is fatal if you're diving alone. The absolute non-negotiable rule: always freedive with a qualified buddy who is watching you at the surface. This rule applies even after you're certified. No exceptions.

Freediving competitions are held periodically at Koh Racha. The annual Phuket Freediving Open has attracted international competitors in recent years, and is open to AIDA3+ certified freedivers. Check the Blue Immersion website for the current calendar.
