Sailing Seasons & Conditions
Phuket's geography offers year-round sailing, but conditions shift dramatically with the monsoons.
Best Season: November–April (Northeast Monsoon)
This is Phuket's premium sailing window. The northeast monsoon brings steady 15–20 knot winds, clear skies, and flat water across the Andaman. Most charter operators, yacht clubs, and cruising boats are active. Racing events cluster here. Bareboat availability peaks; expect better weather windows for multi-day cruises to the Similan Islands, Phi Phi, and Langkawi.
Shoulder Seasons: May & October
Changeable conditions. Some days are perfect; others are lumpy. May sees the transition toward the SW monsoon. October marks the tail end of summer storms. Spring sailing is possible but requires flexibility.
Monsoon: June–September
The Andaman becomes rough. Swell builds. Most cruising yachts either move to the Gulf of Thailand (Samui, Tao) for sheltered anchorages or lay up in a marina. Bareboat charters close or operate only in the Gulf. However, if you're liveaboard and comfortable with heavier weather, costs drop significantly.
Typhoon Risk
Rare in Phuket due to protected geography, but cyclones are possible August–October. Monitor weather forecasts closely during this period.
Phuket's sailing community is tight-knit, international, and competitive. Whether you're keen to race or just want a social angle into cruising, there's a community for you.
Royal Varuna Yacht Club
Based primarily in Pattaya and Bangkok, but members sail out of Phuket. Older, establishment club; good for connections if you're networking among Thai and expat sailors.
Phuket Yacht Club
Informal, meets at Ao Chalong. Friendly, international crowd. No formal membership needed; just show up to socials or racing. Very approachable for newcomers.
King's Cup Regatta
Late November. Ao Chalong anchorage and Royal Phuket Yacht Club host one of Asia's largest offshore sailing races. 100+ yachts, international crews welcome. Even if you don't race, the beach party and on-water spectating (free to watch) is unmissable. Atmosphere is carnival; crews are diverse and welcoming to volunteers and observers.
Bay Regatta
April. A more relaxed, cruising-focused race: Phuket to Krabi to Ko Lanta route. Less cutthroat than King's Cup, great for slower cruising boats.
Weekly Club Racing
November–April: informal Monday/Tuesday club racing at Ao Chalong anchorage. Join a local crew or crewing agency to participate without owning a boat.
Bareboat & Skippered Charters
Bareboat Charter (Self-Sail)
Minimum Qualifications: RYA Competent Crew or Day Skipper certification required. International qualifications recognised.
Availability: November–April only from most operators. Monsoon season (June–Sept) restricted to Gulf of Thailand or closed entirely.
Rate: ฿15,000–฿75,000/day (USD 500–2,500) depending on boat type (monohull vs. catamaran) and luxury level.
Popular Operators:
Sunsail: Royal Phuket Marina, large fleet, international reputation
The Moorings: Multi-location, professionally maintained fleet
Skippered & Crewed Charters
Skippered Day Sail: ฿8,000–฿25,000 for a private charter (6–12 pax, ~6 hours). Professional skipper, ideal for non-sailing tourists or groups wanting a guided experience.
Private Sunset Sail: ฿4,000–฿8,000 for small sailing yacht (4 pax, 3 hours). Romantic, intimate, popular with couples and small groups.
Island-Hopping Liveaboard: 3–7 night trips, ฿25,000–฿150,000 per person depending on boat and itinerary. All-inclusive: meals, skipper, diving/snorkelling stops. Great entry point to cruising life.
Learning to Sail in Phuket
If you're new to sailing, Phuket has excellent training options. RYA (Royal Yachting Association) certification is the gold standard in Asia and recognised globally.
Latitude 8 Sailing
Based at Ao Chalong. Offers RYA Day Skipper courses (฿25,000–฿35,000 for 3–5 days). Internationally recognised, hands-on, small groups. Best time: November–April (consistent winds for learning).
Blue Water Sailing
Boat Lagoon base. RYA training plus racing crew experience. Focused on practical skills and race crew development.
Dinghy Sailing
Phuket Yacht Club occasionally runs beginner dinghy sessions. Lower cost, good for fundamentals. Check their Facebook group for schedules.
The Liveaboard Life in Phuket
Phuket has an active expat liveaboard community. If you're considering living aboard your boat, here's the practical reality.
Anchorage: Ao Chalong
Most accessible option. Free anchoring in the bay. Dinghy dock at Ao Chalong Pier: ฿100/day. Community is established, friendly, and supportive. You'll know most boats within a week.
Provisioning
Bulk supplies: Makro Bypass Road (near Phuket Town) has competitive prices on staples, canned goods, and imports.
Quality imports: Rimping Chalong (supermarket at Chalong) stocks Western brands, quality fruit/veg, and specialty items. Pricier but convenient.
Diesel & Fuel
Available at Ao Chalong Pier and Boat Lagoon Marina. Boat Lagoon offers duty-free cleared diesel if your boat is imported under TM2.
Visa & Documentation
Boat imported = TM2 customs clearance required (once). However, 90-day reporting still applies to crew/skipper as individuals. Get on the 90-day reporting cycle; you'll be assigned a local immigration office.
Community & Online Groups
Phuket Cruising Facebook Group: Very active. Post questions, get real advice, find crew, organise raft-ups and socials. Essential resource.
Maintenance & Chandlery
Boat Lagoon Marina has Southeast Asia's largest chandlery. You'll find parts, epoxy, rigging, electronics, paint, and specialist services. Prices are fair compared to Western marinas.
Insider Tips from 6 Years Living Here
King's Cup is genuinely one of Asia's best sailing events. Even if you don't race, the vibe is electric. Non-sailors enjoy the beach party and on-water spectating.
Boat Lagoon Marina road can flood in monsoon. Check conditions before driving with valuable gear. Use an alternate route if needed.
Thai fishing boats have right of way in practice, if not in law. Be cautious at night; they don't always have lights or radar reflectors. Collision risk is real.
Similan Islands are a protected marine park. No anchoring on coral. Only swing moorings provided. Respect the rules; enforcement is increasing.
Myanmar Mergui cruising permits are limited and require 6+ months advance notice. If you're keen, start paperwork early. Availability is competitive.
Ao Chalong Pier customs is Mon–Fri only for boat clearance. Bring all documentation. Bring your passport, ship's papers, and crew list. Off-hour visits can cause headaches.
