Scuba diver underwater in Phuket Thailand

Diving from Phuket — Overview

Phuket sits on the Andaman Sea, which has consistently better visibility and more diverse marine life than the Gulf of Thailand. Chalong pier (Chalong Bay, south Phuket) is the main departure point for day-trip dive boats and liveaboard vessels. Most dive operators are clustered around Chao Fa East Road and Chao Fa West Road in Chalong.

The local day-trip sites — Racha Yai, Racha Noi, Shark Point, King Cruiser Wreck — are reachable in 30–90 minutes by speedboat. For world-class diving, the Similan Islands National Park and Surin Islands are 2–3 hours north by liveaboard and rank among Asia's best sites.

Phuket is also a major PADI training hub. You can go from zero to PADI Open Water in 3–4 days. Advanced courses, rescue diver, and Divemaster programmes are all widely available at competitive prices.

Best Dive Sites Near Phuket

These are the main sites accessible on day trips from Chalong pier. Most operators run combined trips covering 2–3 sites per day.

Racha Yai dive site Beginner
Racha Yai (Raya Yai)
Depth: 5–25m~45 min from Chalong
Phuket's best beginner dive site. Calm, clear water (visibility 10–20m), colourful coral gardens, giant grouper, leopard sharks resting on sand. Perfect for Open Water dives and snorkelling. Multiple bays with different depth profiles.
Racha Noi diving Intermediate
Racha Noi (Raya Noi)
Depth: 18–40m~75 min from Chalong
More challenging than Racha Yai with stronger currents and deeper dives. Reward: manta ray sightings Oct–May, whale sharks March–April in good years. Experienced divers only for the south pinnacle. Often combined with Racha Yai on the same trip.
Shark Point Phuket Intermediate
Shark Point (Hin Musang)
Depth: 5–26m~30 min east of Phuket
Three submerged pinnacles with soft corals, sea fans, and leopard sharks (the harmless kind). Often dived alongside Anemone Reef and King Cruiser Wreck. Current can be strong — check conditions with your operator. Marine protected area; very good reef health.
King Cruiser wreck dive Advanced
King Cruiser Wreck
Depth: 12–32m~30 min east of Phuket
A car ferry that sank in 1997, now a thriving artificial reef. 83m long structure covered in soft corals and anemones. Moray eels, batfish and huge schools of glassfish inside. Requires Advanced Open Water. Often combined with Shark Point and Anemone Reef.
Similan Islands diving All levels
Similan Islands (liveaboard)
Depth: 5–40m~2hrs north by boat
Thailand's best diving. Granite boulders, white sand, crystal water (visibility 20–30m). Whale sharks, manta rays, sea turtles, Richelieu Rock — the most famous dive in SE Asia. Open October–May only (Similan National Park regulations).
Anemone reef Phuket Intermediate
Anemone Reef (Hin Daeng Noi)
Depth: 5–30mNear Shark Point
A submerged pinnacle carpeted in magnificent anemones with clownfish. Excellent for underwater photography. Current varies — the reef is most impressive at slightly stronger flow, bringing nutrients for the anemones. Usually dived as part of a 3-site eastern route trip.

PADI Schools and Operators at Chalong Pier

The Chalong pier area (Chao Fa East Road) has around 30+ dive shops. Quality varies enormously. The following are consistently well-regarded by the local diving community:

  • Dive Asia (Kata, Chalong) — one of the most established operators, strong training programme, multiple boats
  • Scuba Cat Diving (Chalong pier) — professional set-up, large fleet, popular for liveaboards
  • Sea Bees Diving (Chalong and Bang Tao) — particularly good for families and beginner courses
  • Andaman Scuba (Rawai) — smaller operation, good instructor-to-student ratio, popular with residents
  • Sunrise Divers (Karon) — solid west coast operator for local day trips

For liveaboards specifically, MV Pawara, MV Giamani and MV Deep Andaman Queen are the most recommended Similan Islands vessels departing from Chalong/Ao Makham pier.

One genuine piece of advice: if a dive shop's price is significantly below the market average, investigate why. Common corners cut include overlarge student groups, older equipment, or instructors with limited experience. Diving instruction quality directly relates to your safety underwater.

Liveaboards to the Similan Islands

A liveaboard trip to the Similan Islands is genuinely one of the best experiences you can have based in Phuket. The Similans (11 islands, 84km north-west of Phuket) are consistently ranked in the world's top 10 dive destinations. The granite boulders, pristine coral, and extraordinary visibility (often 25–30m) are worth the early morning departure from Chalong.

The Similan Islands National Park is only open October to May. Most liveaboards depart in the evening, arrive for sunrise dives, and do 3–4 dives per day over 2–3 days before returning. Budget ฿15,000–25,000 per person for a 3-night trip including all dives, food, and accommodation on board.

Best months: December–March for peak visibility. October and April–May are also good but weather is less predictable at the shoulders of season.

If you want to dive Richelieu Rock (2.5 hours further north into the Surin Islands) — the site that Jacques Cousteau called one of the world's best — it's typically added as a highlight day on 4- or 5-day liveaboard itineraries.

Diving Safety — DCS and the Hyperbaric Chamber

⚠️ Decompression Sickness (DCS) — what to do in Phuket

If you or a fellow diver experience DCS symptoms (joint pain, numbness, skin mottling, extreme fatigue after diving), this is a medical emergency. Call Bangkok Hospital Phuket: 076-254425 immediately. They have a hyperbaric (recompression) chamber on site. Do NOT fly for at least 24 hours after any diving. Your dive operator should brief you on this — if they don't, ask before you enter the water.

Beyond DCS, the most common dive injuries in Phuket are ear barotrauma (equalise early and often, never force it), coral cuts (reef shoes and gloves help), and jellyfish stings (local pharmacies stock treatment). Serious shark incidents are extremely rare — the sharks at Shark Point are leopard sharks (harmless), and the whale sharks at Racha Noi are filter feeders.

One genuinely important local tip: always dive with a reputable operator who uses current-equipped boats. There are occasionally strong unexpected currents around Shark Point and Racha Noi — your divemaster needs to be experienced in local conditions, not just certified.

Best Season to Dive in Phuket

  • November–April (best): Dry season. Andaman Sea visibility at its best (15–30m). Calm seas. Similan Islands open. Whale sharks at Racha Noi possible from March.
  • May–October (variable): Monsoon season. West-side boats may not run in rough weather. However, Racha Yai and east-coast sites are often diveable. Visibility reduced (8–15m). Prices lower. Fewer tourists.
  • October and November: Similan Islands season opening. First weeks can be rough as seas settle — by late October conditions are usually good.

Sort your health insurance before you dive

Standard tourist insurance often excludes diving. Make sure your Phuket health insurance covers scuba activities including hyperbaric chamber treatment.
