Phuket Aquarium is one of those places that long-term residents keep meaning to visit and then somehow never get around to. It's been there since 1983, run by the Phuket Marine Biological Center (PMBC) out at Cape Panwa, quietly doing excellent work on marine research and turtle rehabilitation — and offering one of the most genuinely educational and affordable family outings on the island.
This is not a commercial theme-park aquarium with laser shows and overpriced gift shops. It's a government-operated marine research facility that happens to have a very good public aquarium attached. The admission prices reflect this — a family of four pays a fraction of what they'd spend at a private venue. The tradeoff is that it's modest in scale. But for what it is, it's excellent.
Quick Facts — Phuket Aquarium
Where Exactly Is Phuket Aquarium?
Phuket Aquarium sits at the very southeastern tip of Phuket island at Cape Panwa (แหลมพาน), operated by the Department of Marine and Coastal Resources through the Phuket Marine Biological Center. The address is 51 Sakdidej Road, Wichit Subdistrict. From Chalong Circle, take Route 4023 southeast toward Cape Panwa — the drive is approximately 20–30 minutes depending on traffic.
Cape Panwa is noticeably quieter than most of Phuket — the roads are calm, the vegetation thick, and the pace considerably more relaxed than Patong or Kata. It's one of the island's corners that still feels genuinely unhurried. There is a small car park at the aquarium and the site is well-signed from the main road.
Ticket Prices at Phuket Aquarium
One of Phuket Aquarium's best features is its pricing. Because it's a government research facility rather than a commercial attraction, the admission fees are significantly below what comparable commercial aquariums charge. As of 2026:
| Visitor Type | Price (THB) |
|---|---|
| Foreigner adults | 180–250 |
| Thai nationals (adults) | 30–50 |
| Children (foreigners, under 14) | 100–150 |
| Children (Thai, under 14) | 10–20 |
| Children under 3 | Free (typically) |
Prices as of September 2026. Government facility — verify at entrance as prices change periodically.
For a family of two adults and two children (all foreign nationals), the total entry cost is typically 560–800 THB — very reasonable for a 2-hour attraction. Compare this with international commercial aquariums that charge 1,500–3,000 THB per adult.
What to See at Phuket Aquarium
The Shark Tunnel
The highlight for almost every visitor — particularly children — is the walk-through acrylic tunnel that passes through the main shark tank. Multiple shark species are visible from below and the sides: typically black-tip reef sharks, nurse sharks, and various large fish sharing the tank. Walking underneath a 1.5-metre shark is reliably impressive regardless of age. The tank is large enough that the sharks have real space to move, and you're close enough to see them in genuine detail.
The Coral Reef Display
An extensive coral reef display tank showcases the biodiversity of Andaman Sea reef ecosystems — lionfish, moray eels, clownfish, surgeonfish, batfish and dozens of other species in a habitat that mirrors the reefs around Phuket and the Similan Islands. This is well-curated and genuinely beautiful; even experienced divers appreciate the close-up view that the aquarium allows.
Ray and Open Pools
Several ray species including stingrays and smaller spotted rays are displayed in open pools. Eagle rays, when in residence, are an extraordinary sight — they're large, graceful and genuinely prehistoric-looking up close. Open pools also give a sense of the animals' size that enclosed tanks don't always convey.
Touch Pool
A supervised touch pool allows children (and adults) to gently handle sea cucumbers, starfish and other hardy marine invertebrates. Staff supervise carefully and provide guidance on how to handle animals without causing distress. This is consistently the most popular section with children under 10.
Sea Turtle Rehabilitation Area
Phuket Aquarium is connected to the PMBC's sea turtle conservation program. Rescued and rehabilitating sea turtles (green turtles, hawksbill turtles) are sometimes visible in outdoor pools adjacent to the main building. These are not permanent display animals — they are wild turtles receiving care — which makes the encounter more meaningful. Availability depends on whether turtles are currently in treatment.
Opening Hours and Best Time to Visit
Phuket Aquarium is open approximately 08:30–16:30 daily, including weekends. The last entry is typically 30–45 minutes before closing. Verify current hours before visiting — government facilities occasionally close for public holidays or maintenance without extensive advance notice.
Best visiting times: morning arrivals (before 11:00) mean fewer crowds and better lighting conditions for viewing tanks. The midday period (11:30–13:30) tends to be the busiest, with school and tourist groups. A mid-afternoon visit (14:00–16:00) catches the venue on quieter days but you need to allow enough time to see everything before closing.
Making a Full Day of Cape Panwa
Cape Panwa is far enough from the main tourist areas that it's worth combining the aquarium with other activities in the area. Here are the real options:
Ao Yon Beach (Yon Beach)
Just a short drive from the aquarium, Ao Yon is one of Phuket's quietest and most pleasant small beaches. Clear water, minimal crowds, a handful of simple restaurants serving fresh seafood — it's the kind of beach that residents rather than tourists know about. Post-aquarium swimming is a natural pairing, particularly for families.
Cape Panwa Seafood Restaurants
The road toward Cape Panwa has several seafood restaurants that serve excellent, freshly-caught fish at fair prices. These are local-facing rather than tourist-facing — expect plastic chairs, fluorescent lighting and food that's genuinely good. Ask what's fresh that day rather than ordering from the menu.
Koh Racha Day Trip
Ao Makham pier, close to Cape Panwa, is one of the departure points for speedboat trips to Koh Racha — one of Phuket's finest snorkeling and diving day-trip destinations. If you're combining a Cape Panwa day with a boat trip, book the boat for the morning (departs around 08:00–09:00) and do the aquarium in the afternoon after returning.
