Phuket Airport (HKT) handles over 10 million passengers a year. Getting from the airport to your destination is one of the first Phuket decisions you'll make — and it's one of the places where new arrivals most commonly overpay. Here's the clear breakdown.

⚠️ Avoid Unofficial Touts

Inside and immediately outside arrivals, unofficial taxi touts will approach you quoting fixed prices. These are consistently 2–3× the Grab or metered taxi rate. Walk past them, exit the terminal, and either book Grab or use the official metered taxi rank at the far end of the arrivals level.

Transfer Options at a Glance

Best Value

Grab

Book through the Grab app (use airport WiFi before exiting customs). Designated pickup point outside terminal. 20–30% cheaper than metered taxis. Can surge during busy periods.

฿350–850 depending on destination
Most Reliable

Metered AOT Taxi

Official airport taxi rank on arrivals level (far end). Always uses meter + ฿100 airport surcharge. Regulated fares, receipts available. Best for those uncomfortable with apps.

Meter + ฿100 surcharge
Budget

Airport Smart Bus

Runs to Phuket Town (฿100) and Patong (฿150). Cheap but slow — 1–2 hours with stops. No luggage limits but cramped with large bags. Useful if you're not in a hurry and heading near a stop.

฿100–150
Premium

Private Transfer

Pre-booked driver meets you in arrivals with a name sign. Fixed price regardless of traffic or time. Best for late-night arrivals, families with lots of luggage, or first-time visitors.

฿800–2,000 depending on vehicle and distance
Groups

Shared Minibus

For groups going to the same area. Cheaper per person (฿150–250/person to Patong area). Slower — drops at multiple hotels. Not ideal with much luggage or tight connection times.

฿150–250/person
Long-term

Rent a Car

Car rental desks in arrivals (Avis, Budget, local firms). Useful if you need a car immediately on arrival. Requires a valid driving licence. Good for first-time visits where you want to explore independently.

฿800–1,500/day

*Prices are estimates — vary by time of day, demand, and route. Metered taxis add ฿100 airport surcharge on top of meter reading. Grab prices surge during peak hours and holidays.

Insider tip: Bang Tao and Laguna area residents are the biggest winners at airport proximity — it's one of the genuine practical advantages of living in north Phuket. A ฿300 Grab to your villa vs ฿800–1,100 from Rawai adds up significantly over a year of arrivals and departures.

Using Grab at Phuket Airport

Grab is well-established at HKT as of 2026. The process:

  1. Connect to airport WiFi (AirPort HKT Free WiFi) before exiting customs
  2. Open the Grab app and set your destination
  3. Wait for the price estimate — compare to the metered taxi table above
  4. Book your Grab before exiting the terminal
  5. Follow the map to the Grab pickup area (signs in arrivals hall)
  6. Confirm driver name and plate matches the app before getting in

Returning to the Airport

Grab works just as well from your accommodation back to the airport. Book 45–60 minutes before your scheduled departure time minimum (add 30 min buffer during high season Dec–Feb). Traffic on the Route 402 airport road can be heavy in peak season.

For early morning flights (before 7am), Grab availability can be limited. Order 15–20 minutes before your planned departure and have the hotel/villa reception contact a trusted local driver as backup.

Hotel Transfers: Are They Worth It?

Hotel and villa transfers are the most expensive option — typically ฿1,500–3,000 for a sedan to south Phuket. The only reason to use them is guaranteed availability for late-night arrivals and the convenience of not needing the Grab app. For most expats and repeat visitors, Grab delivers 90% of the value at 50% of the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a taxi from Phuket Airport to Patong?+
Official metered taxi (AOT taxi): approximately ฿450–600 to Patong (30–45 min). Grab from the Grab pickup point: ฿350–500 depending on demand. Private transfer: ฿600–900. Avoid unofficial taxi touts who quote ฿800–1,200 for the same trip.
How much is a taxi from Phuket Airport to Rawai or Nai Harn?+
Official metered taxi to Rawai/Nai Harn: ฿750–1,100 (45–60 minutes). Grab typically ฿600–850. Private transfer: ฿900–1,200. South Phuket destinations cost more due to distance — this is legitimate, not a rip-off.
Is Grab available at Phuket Airport?+
Yes. Grab operates at Phuket Airport — there's a designated pickup point outside the terminal. You book through the Grab app before exiting customs (use airport WiFi). Prices are typically 20–30% cheaper than official taxis. During peak hours (9pm–midnight, major holiday weekends) wait times can be 15–30 minutes.
What is the cheapest way to get from Phuket Airport to the city?+
The airport bus (Smart Bus) runs a route to Phuket Town for ฿100 and to Patong for ฿150. This is the cheapest option but journey time is 1–2 hours with stops. For new arrivals with luggage, Grab or metered taxi is more practical.
Should I book a private transfer in advance?+
For first arrivals or late-night flights, yes. Booking a private transfer in advance guarantees someone is waiting with your name. For regular arrivals who know Phuket, Grab is almost always available and cheaper. Avoid pre-booking through hotel websites — hotel transfers are consistently the most expensive option.
