After-School Activities for Kids in Phuket 2026

Last updated: April 2026

Quick Overview

  • Swimming: Thanyapura (Thalang), Blue Tree (Bang Tao), BISP pool (Koh Kaew)
  • Muay Thai for kids: Tiger Muay Thai (Chalong), AKA Thailand — from age 6
  • Football academies: Thanyapura FC, BISP Academy, local community clubs
  • Music lessons: multiple private teachers and studios across all areas
  • Academic tutoring: ID Learning, British Council, private tutors
  • Most school-organised activities: included in or discounted with school fees

One of the first questions parents ask when considering a move to Phuket is whether their kids will have enough to do outside of school. The answer, perhaps surprisingly given that we're on a tourist island, is yes — and in some categories like swimming and martial arts, considerably better than you'd find in most mid-sized cities.

What you won't find is the dense ecosystem of after-school clubs that major cities offer. There's no Saturday-morning football league with 200 kids, no dedicated youth orchestra, no sprawling community arts centre. What Phuket has instead is more personal: excellent individual coaches, world-class sports facilities that adults use professionally and children can access, and a small international community where families actively create activities together.

Sports and Physical Activities

Swimming

Phuket has excellent swimming infrastructure, much of it built around the international sports community.

Thanyapura Aquatic Centre — Thalang

Thanyapura Sports & Health Resort, Thalang (near BISP)

Olympic-standard 50m pool used by national swim teams. Offers structured swim lessons for children from age 4 and squad training for competitive swimmers. Coaching is professional level. Monthly programmes from ฿3,000–฿6,000. The pool is the best in Phuket and possibly southern Thailand. Memberships available.

Blue Tree Phuket — Bang Tao

Blue Tree complex, Cherng Talay (Bang Tao area)

Family entertainment complex with a large pool, lazy river, and water park. Swimming lessons for children are available. The environment is more fun and recreational than Thanyapura — better for younger kids who need to enjoy water before training competitively. Day membership ฿600–฿800 for kids.

BISP Aquatics — Koh Kaew

British International School Phuket, Koh Kaew

BISP runs swimming programmes for its enrolled students, but also offers community swim coaching. Best for families whose children attend BISP or who live in the Koh Kaew/Kathu area. International-standard coaching and facilities.

Muay Thai for Children

This is one of the things Phuket does genuinely better than most places in the world. Children learning Muay Thai in Phuket are training at the same facilities used by professional fighters — the instruction quality is exceptional.

Tiger Muay Thai — Kids Programme

Soi Ta-iad, Chalong

Tiger has a dedicated junior Muay Thai programme for ages 6–16. Classes emphasise discipline, fitness, and confidence before contact technique. Morning and afternoon sessions available. Per session ฿400–฿600; monthly memberships from ฿2,500. Many long-term expat kids train here for years. Excellent English-speaking coaches.

AKA Thailand — Kids Classes

Chalong area

AKA (American Kickboxing Academy Thailand) offers junior Muay Thai and MMA fundamentals. More American-style training ethos. Day passes ฿500; monthly from ฿3,000.

Football

Football is popular among expat kids. The main structured options are Thanyapura FC (weekend training and occasional fixtures), BISP Football Academy (for enrolled students), and the informal expat parent-organised Saturday morning games that spring up in different areas — check Facebook groups for your area.

An honest observation: Phuket doesn't have a competitive youth football league the way European or Australian cities do. If your child is serious about football development, the school team and Thanyapura are the best options, but they won't replicate a full competitive league environment. Tennis (Thanyapura courts), padel (growing fast in Phuket), and individual sports are often better fits.

Tennis and Racket Sports

Thanyapura has excellent tennis courts and offers junior coaching programmes. Individual lessons ฿600–฿1,000/hour for children. Some villa complexes in Bang Tao and Laguna have courts accessible to residents. Padel is growing fast — a few new courts have opened in the Bang Tao/Boat Avenue area, popular with the European expat community.

Music Lessons

Phuket has a reasonable number of private music teachers, particularly in the Phuket Town and Bang Tao areas. Guitar, piano, drums, violin, and singing are all available. Most are individual tutors found via Facebook groups (Phuket Families, Phuket Parent Connection) or referrals through schools. See our dedicated music lessons for kids in Phuket guide for providers and prices.

Art Classes

A few dedicated children's art studios operate in Phuket. Check Facebook and near the Thalang/Bang Tao area for current offerings — providers in this space come and go. The Phuket Town arts and culture scene sometimes runs children's workshops through the Old Town museums and cultural organisations.

Academic Tutoring

If your child needs academic support in English-language curriculum, tutoring is available through several channels:

  • ID Learning Centre (Phuket Town area) — IGCSE and IB-focused tutoring, English language
  • British Council Phuket — English language classes for children, various levels
  • Private tutors — many expat teachers and recent graduates offer private tutoring, advertised via Facebook groups. Rates ฿500–฿1,500/hour depending on level and subject

School-Organised Activities

The international schools in Phuket run substantial after-school programmes. BISP has over 30 clubs and sports teams for enrolled students — football, basketball, swimming, drama, robotics, and much more. UWC runs an IB-aligned CAS (Creativity, Activity, Service) programme. HeadStart and QSI have smaller but active after-school programmes proportionate to their size.

If your child is at one of these schools, the school programme is often the best source of activities — the coaching quality is good, the children have the same friends, and transport is straightforward. See our international school comparison and full schools guide for details.

Finding Activities by Area

Where you live affects which activities are practical. Bang Tao and Thalang are the best-served areas — Thanyapura, Blue Tree, BISP all close by, and the expat community here is large enough to sustain many activities organically. Rawai and Nai Harn have Tiger Muay Thai (Chalong, 10 minutes), HeadStart school activities, and a strong community of families. Phuket Town has British Council, ID Learning, and arts activities. For all areas see our Bang Tao guide and Rawai guide.

The Honest Reality

Children in Phuket live a different life from children in cities. Less structured, more self-organised, with more time outdoors. That's largely a positive — many expat parents feel their children develop more confidence, independence, and physical activity here than they would have in a suburban routine at home. But it requires parental effort to find and arrange activities, and it won't suit children who thrive in a dense, structured programme.

The expat community is your biggest resource. The Phuket Families and Phuket Parent Connection Facebook groups are active and helpful — parents regularly organise informal sports groups, weekend activities, and share tips on new providers. Engage with this community early.
