Music education is one of those things Phuket handles better than you might expect for an island that's more famous for beach clubs than conservatories. There are qualified teachers here — many of them Western-trained musicians who moved to Phuket precisely because they could build a life around teaching and tropical living simultaneously.
The ecosystem isn't comparable to a major city. There's no Yamaha Music School franchise, no established independent music academy with multiple campuses. What exists is a network of individual teachers, the music programmes at international schools, and a small number of music-focused studios operating out of private spaces. That's enough for most families.
Instrument by Instrument
Piano
Piano teachers are the most common music teachers in Phuket. Several work as private tutors, often teaching from home studios or travelling to students' homes. Most have classical training, some have additional pop/jazz repertoire. The best piano teachers in Phuket tend to be booked well in advance — ask in Facebook groups early if you're planning ahead.
Equipment note: if you're bringing a child who plays piano, a quality digital piano (88 keys, weighted action) is essential for practice at home. These aren't cheap to buy in Phuket — budget ฿15,000–฿40,000 for a Yamaha P-series or Roland FP-series. HomePro at Central Festival or Jungceylon usually has a limited selection. For higher-end instruments, Bangkok is a better option.
Guitar
Guitar is the easiest instrument to find teaching for in Phuket. Multiple teachers offer acoustic and electric guitar, and guitar is available for purchase locally — acoustic beginners' guitars from ฿1,500–฿3,000 in Phuket Town music shops. Lessons for children run ฿500–฿900/session. Most teachers will also cover basic music theory as part of lessons.
Violin
Violin teaching is available but less common — there are a handful of qualified teachers in Phuket. Expect to pay ฿800–฿1,200 per lesson for a qualified teacher. Teachers sometimes travel between areas, so it's worth asking about location flexibility. Violins for students are available in Bangkok much more cheaply and at better quality than anything you'll find locally — if you're serious about violin study, make the trip.
Drums
Drum teachers are available, primarily in the Phuket Town and Bang Tao areas. Electric drum kits (essential in most Phuket residences due to noise constraints) are available from music shops and online. Lessons ฿600–฿1,000/session. Some teachers offer home visits which helps with setup.
Singing / Voice
Singing teachers for children are available, often the same teachers who offer piano or guitar. Pop-focused and classical vocal training are both findable. Check Facebook groups for recommendations specific to style and age group.
School Music Programmes
For families with children at international schools, the school music programme is often the best starting point. Quality varies significantly:
| School | Music Programme | Individual Lessons Available? |
|---|---|---|
| BISP (Koh Kaew) | Full programme: ensemble, bands, productions, music technology | Yes, for fee |
| UWC (Thalang) | IB Music, ensembles, CAS requirement | Yes, for fee |
| HeadStart (Rawai) | Music in curriculum, basic ensemble | Limited |
| QSI (Rawai) | Curriculum music only | No |
| BIS (Bang Tao) | Curriculum music, basic ensemble | Limited |
| Kajonkiet (multiple) | Thai music curriculum focus | No |
BISP's music programme is the strongest. They have a recording studio, professional instruments, and multiple ensemble groups including a jazz band, orchestra, and various smaller ensembles. For a musically serious child, this is a significant argument for BISP over other schools. See our international school comparison for full details.
Music Exams: ABRSM and Trinity
This comes up regularly and the honest answer is: graded music exams are difficult to arrange in Phuket. ABRSM (Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music) and Trinity College London exams are not administered locally — children need to travel to Bangkok or Chiang Mai, where exam sessions are held several times per year.
Several Phuket teachers prepare children for ABRSM grades and can advise on exam session timing and registration. If exam progression is important to your child's music education, discuss this explicitly with any teacher you're considering — not all private tutors have ABRSM-focused teaching experience.

What to Look for in a Teacher
In a community this size, it's impossible to verify every teacher's credentials upfront. Here's what to look for:
- Formal music training — at minimum a music degree or diploma, not just "played for years"
- Experience with children specifically — teaching adults and teaching children require different skills
- Trial lesson offered — any good teacher will offer a trial or first lesson at reduced/free rate
- References from other parents — ask the Facebook group for direct recommendations with specific names
- Structured lesson plan — not just playing songs, but progressive skill development and theory
Buying Instruments in Phuket
For beginners, local options are adequate. Guitar shops on Phang Nga Road in Phuket Town and in the markets near Jungceylon carry entry-level instruments. Expect to pay ฿1,500–฿4,000 for a decent beginner's acoustic guitar.
For keyboards and digital pianos: HomePro at Central Festival has a limited but functional selection of Yamaha and Casio keyboards. Digital pianos (weighted action) are harder to find — Power Mall in Phuket Town sometimes has a reasonable selection.
For strings (violin, cello) and brass/woodwind: Bangkok is significantly better. If you're investing in a proper instrument, take a trip. Alternatively, buy new in Europe/Australia and bring it — air travel with instruments under 10kg is usually accommodated as hand luggage.
