Getting from Phuket to Phun Phin Station

Before you can board a Thai train, you need to reach the nearest station. Here are your options:

Option 1: Bus (Phuket Bus Terminal 2 → Surat Thani)

Phuket Bus Terminal 2 (near Central Festival on Chalermprakiat Road) runs regular services to Surat Thani bus terminal, from where you take a local songthaew or taxi 5km to Phun Phin station. The bus journey takes around 3.5–4 hours and costs ฿160–฿250. Not the most comfortable option, but the cheapest. You'll need to plan carefully to connect with your train departure — allow at least 1 hour buffer at Phun Phin.

Option 2: Minivan (Shared)

Shared minivans depart regularly from near Phuket Bus Terminal 2 and from Patong and other tourist areas. They're faster than buses (around 3 hours) and drop passengers at Surat Thani town or bus terminal. Cost: ฿200–฿350 per person. Comfort varies widely depending on the van and driver — some runs are fine, others are uncomfortably packed.

Option 3: Private Transfer

A private car from Phuket to Phun Phin costs ฿2,000–฿3,500 for the vehicle. For a family or group, this is often the most practical option — door-to-door, comfortable, and you control the timing. Your hotel, guesthouse, or a local transfer company (try vetted Phuket transfer services) can arrange this.

🌴 Insider Tip For overnight trains departing Phun Phin at 18:00–22:00, aim to be at the station by 17:00 at the latest. The platform can get busy, and confirming your carriage and berth takes time. Take an afternoon bus or minivan from Phuket to arrive in plenty of time.

Train Routes from Phun Phin

The Sleeper Train Experience to Bangkok

The overnight sleeper from Phun Phin to Bangkok is genuinely one of the nicer train journeys in Southeast Asia if you book correctly. First-class sleepers have private, air-conditioned cabins with two berths (upper and lower), fold-down beds with actual mattresses and bedding, and a small window. Second-class sleepers have curtained berths in an open carriage — comfortable but less private.

Meals are available from a dining car or attendants who walk through with trays. The food is basic (fried rice, noodles, pad Thai — ฿80–฿150) but decent for train food. The journey through the southern Thai landscape at night has a genuine romance that flying Bangkok–Phuket doesn't offer.

Booking SRT Sleeper Trains

Book via the SRT's official website (new.railway.co.th) for Thai-language booking at the best prices, or via 12Go.Asia for an English-language interface with slightly higher fees but easier navigation. First-class sleepers on popular dates sell out 2–4 weeks ahead. Book early if you're travelling in December–January (high season) or around Thai holidays.

🌴 Insider Tip Upper berths on second-class sleepers are cheaper and actually more private once the curtain is drawn. Lower berths cost more and spend the day period as a facing seat — meaning strangers sit across from you until bedtime. If privacy matters, pay the extra ฿100 for a first-class lower berth instead.

Train vs. Flying: When Does the Train Make Sense?

Flying Phuket to Bangkok takes 1 hour 20 minutes and costs ฿800–฿2,500 on AirAsia or Thai Lion Air. Why would anyone take a 14-hour train journey instead? There are actually good reasons:

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a direct train from Phuket to Bangkok?

No — Phuket has no train station. You take a bus or minivan from Phuket to Phun Phin station near Surat Thani (3–4 hours), then board the overnight train to Bangkok (10–12 hours). Total door-to-door time is about 14–16 hours compared to 1 hour 20 minutes flying.

How do I book a Thai train ticket online?

Use the SRT official website (new.railway.co.th) for Thai-language booking, or 12Go.Asia for English-language booking with slightly higher fees. Book first-class sleepers at least 2–3 weeks ahead during busy periods. You pick up your ticket at the station or receive an e-ticket via email.

How far is Phun Phin station from Surat Thani town?

About 14km — roughly a 20-minute taxi or songthaew ride. The station is outside Surat Thani city centre, so factor this into your connection time. Most bus services to Surat Thani drop you in town, not at the station.

What is a first-class sleeper cabin like on Thai trains?

First-class sleeper cabins have two berths in a private, lockable compartment with air-conditioning. Beds have proper mattresses, pillows, and blankets. There's a small window, reading light, and a fold-down table. It's comparable to a mid-range hotel bed — perfectly comfortable for overnight travel.

Is the train from Phuket cheaper than flying to Bangkok?

For solo travellers on budget airlines, flying is usually cheaper if booked in advance (฿800–฿1,500 vs ฿1,600–฿2,500 train+bus). For families of 3–4, the train becomes competitive. Add in airport transfers, checked luggage fees, and the city-centre arrival advantage of Hua Lamphong station, and the train makes real financial sense.
