Renewing your Thai driving licence in Phuket is one of those admin tasks that sounds daunting but is actually quite painless once you know what to bring. Having done it myself twice and helped a handful of Phuket expat friends through the process, I can tell you the total time at the Department of Land Transport (DLT) office is usually under two hours — and the cost is less than ฿1,000 including the medical certificate.
This guide covers the standard renewal of a Thai car licence (Type 2 = non-professional, most common for expats) and Thai motorcycle licence. It also covers what to do if your licence has expired and whether foreigners can renew in Phuket regardless of which province originally issued their licence.
Types of Thai Driving Licence
| Type | Description | Validity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Type 1 | Non-professional car licence (old style — 2-year) | 2 years | First licence is 2-year; renew to 5-year |
| Type 2 | Non-professional car licence (5-year) | 5 years | Most common for expats |
| Type 3 | Professional car licence (taxi/hire car) | 3 years | Requires additional test |
| Motorcycle (non-prof) | Non-professional motorcycle | 2 or 5 years | Same DLT office process |
| International DL | International Driving Permit issued in Thailand | 1 year | Based on existing Thai licence |
For most expats, you're renewing a Type 2 (5-year non-professional car licence). The first Thai licence issued to you is typically 2-year; all subsequent renewals are 5-year provided you renew within 1 year of expiry. If your licence expired more than 1 year ago, you may need to retake the practical test.
Documents Required for Renewal
Bring All of These to the DLT Office:
- Current Thai driving licence (even if expired, bring it)
- Original passport with a valid Thai visa/permission-to-stay stamp
- Photocopy of your passport photo page
- Photocopy of your current visa/entry stamp page
- Medical certificate dated within 30 days (ใบรับรองแพทย์) — see below
- 2 passport-size photos (1" x 1.5" or 2" x 2" — check current requirements at DLT)
- Proof of address in Thailand (not always required, but have it ready)
The DLT will check that your passport shows you have legal permission to stay in Thailand. If your visa or extension has expired — even by one day — they cannot process your renewal. Renew your visa first, then go to the DLT. Keep a photocopy of every page that has a visa or immigration stamp.
The Medical Certificate
You need a medical certificate (ใบรับรองแพทย์) confirming you are physically fit to drive. This is a simple form filled out by any licensed doctor — it is NOT a full medical examination.
Where to Get It in Phuket
- Clinics near the DLT office in Chalong: Several walk-in clinics on the road leading to the DLT specifically cater to driving licence renewals. Cost: ฿50–150. Takes 5 minutes. No appointment needed.
- Bangkok Hospital Phuket: Full medical certificate service available (076-254425). More expensive (฿200–500) but useful if you have existing medical records there.
- Siriroj Hospital: Also provides medical certificates (076-361888). ฿200–300.
- Any private clinic: Your regular GP in Rawai, Bang Tao, or wherever you live can provide the certificate.
Step-by-Step: Renewal Day at Phuket DLT
-
1
Get Your Medical Certificate (Before Going)
Visit a nearby clinic on the morning of your DLT visit. The clinic near the DLT on Luang Por Wat Chalong Road is the easiest option — ฿50–150, walk in, done in 5 minutes. Medical cert is valid for 30 days so you can get it slightly in advance.
-
2
Arrive at DLT Office — Take a Queue Number
The Phuket DLT office is off Luang Por Wat Chalong Road near Chalong Circle (convenient for Rawai and Chalong residents; about 20–25 minutes from Bang Tao or Kamala). Parking is available. Go in, find the ticket machine or reception for the licence renewal queue, and take your number. Arrive by 14:00 to be safe — the office stops taking new customers well before 16:30.
-
3
Submit Documents at the Window
When your number is called, submit your: current licence, passport + copies, medical certificate, passport photos. A staff member will check everything. If anything is missing, they'll tell you — this is a common time to discover a missing photocopy, so bring extras of everything.
-
4
Watch the Safety Video
You will be directed to a room to watch a road safety video (typically 20–30 minutes). It's in Thai but subtitled, or there may be an English-language version available on request. Attendance is mandatory. Bring your phone to fill the time — just don't leave the room.
-
5
Reaction Test
A simple computer-based test: foot reaction (press pedal when light appears) and colour vision test (identify red, green, yellow). Takes about 5 minutes. Almost everyone passes. Don't worry about it. If you're colourblind, mention this to the examiner before starting.
-
6
Photo, Payment, and Collection
After the test, you'll have your photo taken for the new licence. Pay the fee (฿505 for 5-year renewal). The licence is typically printed and issued on the spot — you walk out with it the same day. The new card format includes a chip and your photo, expiry date, and blood type.
Converting a Foreign Licence to Thai
If you're converting a foreign licence to a Thai one for the first time (rather than renewing an existing Thai licence), the process has additional steps:
- Official translation of your foreign licence into Thai (certified translator)
- Certified copy of your foreign licence from your home country's embassy or an approved translation office
- The same medical certificate, safety video, and reaction test as above
- Written knowledge test (100 questions, available in English and several other languages)
- In some cases: a practical driving test (for motorcycle conversions, or if your foreign licence doesn't include certain vehicle categories)
The written test can be booked at the DLT office. Practice materials are available at the DLT and online. The first Thai licence issued will be 2-year; all subsequent renewals are 5-year.
My Licence Has Expired — Can I Still Renew?
If your Thai driving licence expired less than 1 year ago: you can still renew it at the DLT with the standard process above plus a small additional fee.
If your licence expired more than 1 year ago: the DLT may require you to retake the driving test (practical test). In practice, the rules are applied inconsistently — some offices accept renewal up to 3 years after expiry; others enforce the 1-year limit strictly. Bring your old expired licence and let the DLT staff assess your specific situation on the day.
New to Phuket? Sort Out Your Visa First
Before renewing your driving licence, make sure your Thai visa and permission to stay is current. A reputable visa agent in Phuket can handle extensions and conversions efficiently.
