SCB — Siam Commercial Bank — is Thailand's oldest bank and one of the big four. It has a solid ATM network across Phuket, a capable mobile banking app (SCB Easy), and competitive savings rates. For most Phuket expats, though, it's the third bank you open rather than the first — and understanding why is important before you make the trip to a branch.

Can Foreigners Open an SCB Account in Phuket?

Yes — but SCB is notably stricter than KBank or Bangkok Bank for foreigner account opening. You'll almost certainly need a Non-Immigrant visa (not a tourist visa, not a visa exemption stamp). Tourist visa holders are typically turned away at SCB, whereas KBank and Bangkok Bank are more flexible in practice at their expat-friendly branches.

⚠️ SCB Is Strict About Visa Type

If you're on a tourist visa or visa exemption, don't waste an afternoon trying to open an SCB account. Come back once you have a Non-OA, Non-B, DTV, or LTR visa. KBank's Central Festival Phuket branch or Bangkok Bank's Phangnga Road branch may be more accommodating in the interim.

Wise (formerly TransferWise)
Mid-market exchange rate. Typical fee 0.4–1.5%. Thai bank transfers usually arrive same day. The Wise debit card skips the 220 THB ATM fee at many machines. Used by the majority of Phuket expats.

Insider tip

The SCB Central Festival branch has the most experience with expat accounts — it's inside Phuket's largest mall and processes a high volume of foreigner applications. Go on a Tuesday or Wednesday morning (not Monday, not weekend — quieter and staff are more patient). Call ahead on 1333 to confirm current document requirements before making the trip.

SCB EASY App — What Expats Actually Use

SCB Easy is the mobile banking app. It's genuinely capable and the international wire transfer integration (via Western Union partnership) is useful for expats sending money overseas. The English interface is good but not as polished as KBank's K PLUS app. Key features expats use:

  • PromptPay QR code payments — essential for paying rent, markets, and restaurants
  • Bill payment — electricity (PEA), True/AIS internet, and most utilities
  • International transfer — Western Union-linked; rates aren't great (use Wise for large transfers)
  • Currency exchange rates view — useful for timing remittances
  • Fixed deposit management

SCB SWIFT Code — For International Transfers

SCB SWIFT Code
SICOTHBK

Use this code when receiving international wire transfers or setting up transfers from overseas. For Wise transfers to a Thai bank, select "Siam Commercial Bank (SCB)" and use this SWIFT code with your 10-digit account number. Bank address: 9 Ratchadapisek Road, Chatuchak, Bangkok 10900.

Insider tip — Wise still beats all three for transfers

No matter which Thai bank you use, Wise (formerly TransferWise) will beat their international transfer rates significantly — typically 0.4–0.7% fee vs 2–4% total margin at Thai banks including SCB. Use your Thai bank for day-to-day transactions and PromptPay; use Wise to receive money from abroad. The saving on a £5,000 monthly remittance is around ฿3,000–฿6,000 per month.

Using SCB for Non-OA Retirement Visa

If you hold a Non-OA retirement visa, you need ฿800,000 maintained in a Thai bank account (or ฿65,000/month income proof, or a combination). SCB can hold this balance and issue the official balance letter for Phuket Immigration. However, Bangkok Bank is the most widely recognised by Phuket Immigration for this purpose, and their Phangnga Road branch process is well-established. SCB works fine but confirm with Phuket Immigration (502 Phuket Road) that they'll accept your specific letter format before relying on it for your annual extension. For more on the Non-OA visa process, see our Non-OA retirement visa guide and our complete Phuket banking guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can foreigners open an SCB account in Phuket?

+
Yes, but SCB is stricter than KBank or Bangkok Bank. You'll almost certainly need a Non-Immigrant visa. Tourist visa holders are usually turned away. The Central Festival Phuket branch has the most expat experience. Call 1333 before visiting to confirm current requirements.

What documents do I need to open an SCB account?

+
Passport with valid Non-Immigrant visa, TM30 receipt, proof of address (utility bill or rental contract), Thai phone number, and ฿2,000 initial deposit. Some branches also want an employer letter — call ahead.

What is SCB EASY and how does it compare?

+
SCB Easy is SCB's mobile banking app. It's functional with good PromptPay and bill payment features. Most expats rate KBank's K PLUS as having a better English interface, but SCB Easy's ME account savings rate (1.5%) is competitive. International transfer via Western Union integration is convenient but not as cheap as using Wise.

What is SCB's SWIFT code?

+
SCB's SWIFT/BIC code is SICOTHBK. Use this when receiving international wire transfers. For Wise transfers to your SCB account, use SICOTHBK with your 10-digit account number.

How does SCB compare to KBank for expats in Phuket?

+
KBank is generally easier to open as a foreigner (Yaowarat Road branch), K PLUS app has better English, and KBank's Wise partnership makes international transfers simpler. SCB offers a slightly higher savings rate on the ME account. Both have good ATM coverage. Most expats use KBank as their primary account and may open SCB as a secondary.
