Phuket has one of Asia's most active sailing communities — a mix of long-term liveaboards, weekend racers, charter skippers, and retirees who simply wanted to park their boat somewhere warm. The combination of consistent northeast trade winds from November to April, protected anchorages, world-class marinas, and proximity to some spectacular cruising grounds (the Mergui Archipelago, Langkawi, and the Andaman Islands) makes this an extraordinary base for any sailor.

I've lived in Phuket for six years and watched the sailing community grow considerably. The marinas are fuller, the races are better attended, and there are now more sailing schools than ever catering to expats who always meant to learn. This guide tells you everything you need to know to get on the water here.

Sailing Races & Regattas in Phuket

Phuket's sailing calendar is genuinely impressive for a single island. From informal Wednesday night beer-can races to internationally acclaimed blue-water regattas, there's competition at every level.

Dec
King's Cup Regatta — Southeast Asia's Biggest Yacht Race

Held annually in late November/December off Kata Beach, the King's Cup is the jewel of Phuket's sailing calendar. Over 100 boats, 1,500+ sailors from 30+ countries, multiple classes (racing, cruising, multihull). The week includes epic races, beach parties, and live music. If you're in Phuket and remotely interested in sailing, you need to experience this. Racing entry: ฿3,500–12,000 depending on class.

Oct
Phuket Raceweek — Early Season Warm-Up

A relaxed but competitive regatta in October that kicks off the sailing season as the monsoon fades. Popular with cruising boats arriving for the season and a good entry point for newer racers. Based at Ao Chalong. More social, less intense than King's Cup — but still proper racing.

Weekly
ACYC Wednesday Night Racing Series

The Ao Chalong Yacht Club runs informal Wednesday evening races from October to April. Short courses, friendly competition, cold beers at sunset. This is the best way for new arrivals to get racing experience, meet the community, and find crew for longer passages. Free to enter for ACYC members.

Phang Nga Bay Racing

A 3-day series of races through Phang Nga Bay's limestone karst scenery — arguably the most visually spectacular sailing event in Asia. Limited entry (30 boats). Pre-register months ahead if interested. Finish line party on a private beach is a highlight. Overnight anchorages included.

Learning to Sail in Phuket

Phuket has several excellent sailing schools offering internationally recognised certificates. If you already sail, you can jump straight to bareboat chartering. If not, you can be competent on a keelboat within a week.

Accredited Sailing Schools

  • Sunsail/The Moorings Phuket — RYA-affiliated day sailing courses from Ao Chalong. Day Skipper (5 days, ฿25,000–30,000), Coastal Skipper (5 days, ฿28,000–35,000).
  • Blue Lagoon Sailing School — RYA courses in Bang Tao Bay. Popular with Bang Tao/Laguna expat families. Junior programmes in Optimist and Laser dinghies.
  • Asian Outtriggers (ACYC) — Informal learn-to-sail attached to Ao Chalong Yacht Club. Cheapest option; more hands-on than formal. Great for adults who just want to get comfortable on a keelboat.

Buying & Owning a Boat in Phuket

Several hundred foreign nationals base their boats in Phuket — it's one of Asia's more straightforward places to own a vessel, though it's never truly simple.

Registration Options for Foreign Owners

  • Thai company registration — The most common route for long-term expats. A Thai company owns the boat; you own the company. Allows full use of Thai facilities, marinas, and racing entries. Requires ongoing company compliance costs (approx. ฿15,000–25,000/year).
  • Foreign flag registration — Keep your boat on its country-of-origin flag (UK, Australian, US, etc.). Allowed in Thailand on a temporary import basis. Renewable annually. Simpler paperwork but some restrictions on commercial use and longer stays in Thai waters.
  • Bareboat charter — Charter a vessel for 1–4 weeks from Ao Chalong operators rather than owning. Charter costs: ฿25,000–120,000/week for 35–50ft keelboats depending on season and vessel age.
⚠️ Legal Advice is Essential

Thai marine law is complex and rules on foreign ownership have changed multiple times. Before purchasing any vessel, get advice from a Phuket-based maritime lawyer. The cost (typically ฿10,000–30,000 for a consultation and structure advice) is minimal compared to the cost of getting it wrong. Some expat Facebook groups circulate outdated advice — don't rely on them.

Expat Health Insurance for Sailors

Medical evacuation from an offshore anchorage or the Mergui Archipelago isn't cheap. Make sure your expat health policy includes emergency evacuation and covers watersports activities.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Foreign nationals can own a boat registered in Thailand under a Thai company structure, or register it under foreign flag. Many expats register under a Thai company (more affordable, easier yacht club membership) or keep the boat on a foreign flag. Work with a Phuket marine lawyer before purchasing — the rules vary significantly by vessel size and nationality.
RYA and ASA beginners courses cost ฿8,000–15,000 for a 2-day introductory course. Dinghy sailing taster sessions start around ฿2,500–3,500 for a half day. Private coaching is ฿3,000–5,000/hour depending on the instructor and boat type.
October to April is peak sailing season — northeast trade winds provide steady 10–20 knot winds, calm seas, and clear skies. The King's Cup Regatta runs in December each year. May to September brings the southwest monsoon with stronger, more variable winds and rougher conditions — suitable for experienced sailors only.
The King's Cup Regatta is Southeast Asia's largest international yacht race, held annually in late November/early December off Phuket's west coast near Kata Beach. Over 100 boats and 1,500+ sailors from 30+ countries compete. It has been running since 1987. Social events, parties, and live music run throughout the week.
Royal Phuket Marina (Koh Kaew, east coast) and Yacht Haven Phuket (north coast, Mai Khao) are the two best full-service marinas for long-term liveaboard or charter bases. Ao Chalong Yacht Club is more community-oriented and suits smaller vessels and racers. Royal Phuket Marina has the most comprehensive refit facilities.
