When families research international schools in Phuket, most conversations start and end with BISP and UWC. QSI International School gets overlooked — partly because it's smaller, partly because the American curriculum isn't as familiar to the mostly European expat community here. That's a shame, because QSI is genuinely one of the better schools on the island, and for the right family, it's the best fit.
We've spoken to parents who chose QSI, some who left for other schools, and one long-term Rawai expat whose two kids went through QSI from Year 1 to secondary. Here's the full picture — fees, curriculum, strengths, weaknesses, and who it actually suits.

What Makes QSI Different: Mastery Learning
Most international schools in Phuket use a year-group model where you move up with your age cohort regardless of whether you've fully mastered the content. QSI does things differently. Their Mastery Learning approach means students progress when they demonstrate genuine understanding of a subject — not when they turn eight.
In practice, this means a child can be ahead of their age group in maths while still working at age level in writing, with no stigma attached to either. For families who've watched their kids struggle in a traditional system, or who have children with different learning paces across subjects, this is genuinely valuable.
The flip side: it requires more self-directed learning than traditional schools, and some children (and parents) find the structure less familiar. If your child thrives with clear year-group benchmarks and traditional homework patterns, the adjustment can take time.
Fees & Costs 2026
| Year Group | Annual Tuition (THB) | Registration Fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pre-K / Kindergarten | ฿160,000–฿180,000 | ฿10,000–฿15,000 | Half or full day options |
| Elementary (Grades 1–5) | ฿200,000–฿240,000 | ฿10,000–฿15,000 | Full year rolling intake |
| Middle School (Grades 6–8) | ฿250,000–฿270,000 | ฿10,000–฿15,000 | Subject teachers begin |
| High School (Grades 9–12) | ฿270,000–฿300,000 | ฿10,000–฿15,000 | US high school diploma |
These figures place QSI in Phuket's mid-range tier. You're paying significantly less than BISP (฿550,000–฿730,000/year) or UWC Thailand (฿400,000–฿600,000/year), while getting a credentialed international school with genuine university preparation. Compared to HeadStart (฿240,000–฿330,000/year), QSI is similar or slightly higher at secondary level.
Insider Tip
QSI offers rolling admissions — you can join mid-year without being penalised for missing the September intake. For families arriving in January or March, this is a significant practical advantage over schools with fixed intake points. The Mastery Learning model also makes mid-year joins less disruptive than in traditional year-group schools.
Location: Rawai South
QSI is in the Rawai area, making it the most convenient school for families living in Rawai, Nai Harn, Kata, Karon, or Chalong. If you're in Bang Tao or Laguna, the daily commute (40–55 minutes each way) is something to factor seriously into your decision. A school run from Bang Tao to Rawai and back is 90 minutes of parenting time, every day.
For the south Phuket expat community, QSI's location is genuinely convenient — especially compared to BISP's Koh Kaew campus (north of Phuket Town) which is a 50-minute drive from Rawai.
Curriculum & University Preparation
QSI's American curriculum leads to a US high school diploma, which is widely accepted by universities in the USA, UK, Australia, Canada, and most international destinations. The diploma is accredited through MSA, which major US universities recognise.
For families with American children, or those targeting US universities, QSI's diploma is the clearest path. For children targeting UK universities, the A-level route at HeadStart or BIS may be more straightforward — though US diplomas with strong SAT/ACT scores are accepted by most UK universities.
QSI does not offer the IB Diploma Programme (which BISP and UWC offer). If your family specifically wants IB, QSI isn't the right choice.
✓ Strengths
- Mastery Learning suits self-paced learners
- Rolling admissions — join any time of year
- Small school (personal attention, not lost in a crowd)
- Rawai location — ideal for south Phuket families
- More affordable than BISP or UWC
- Genuine university preparation (US diploma)
- Strong community feel reported by parents
✗ Weaknesses
- No IB Diploma — if IB is essential, look elsewhere
- Smaller peer group and social pool
- Less sports/extracurricular infrastructure than BISP
- Mastery Learning adjustment can be challenging initially
- Limited brand recognition in Europe vs IB schools
- Waiting list possible for popular year groups
School Community & Culture
QSI's small size is both its biggest strength and limitation. With 200–250 students across all year groups, your child will know most of their schoolmates by name within a term. Teachers know students individually rather than as faces in a class of 25.
The community is genuinely international — a mix of American, European, and Asian families, with a noticeable American contingent reflecting the curriculum. The parent community in the Rawai/Nai Harn area tends to be close-knit, and QSI school events are well-attended.
The downside of small size becomes apparent at secondary level. Social dynamics in a year group of 12–15 can be more intense than in a school of 400. Teenagers often want a bigger social pool. Several families we spoke with moved children to BISP at secondary level for exactly this reason.

Full School Comparison →Admissions Process
QSI's rolling admissions is a genuine advantage. The process typically involves:
- Contact the school directly to confirm places are available in your child's year group
- Submit application form, school records, and immunisation documentation
- Assessment (usually informal — QSI evaluates Mastery level placement, not selective entry)
- Pay registration fee to secure the place
- Start date flexible — mid-term joins are routine
QSI is non-selective in the traditional sense — they assess your child's academic level to place them correctly in the Mastery progression, not to determine whether they "qualify" to attend. This makes QSI more accessible than selective schools, and particularly good for children who've had interrupted schooling or who struggled in previous settings.

Who Should Choose QSI?
QSI is the right choice if: you're living in the Rawai/Nai Harn/Kata/Chalong area; your child learns at their own pace and doesn't thrive in a traditional competitive environment; you're an American family or targeting US universities; or you need rolling admissions because you're arriving mid-year.
QSI is probably not the right choice if: you specifically need the IB Diploma; your teenager needs a larger social peer group; you're in Bang Tao and the commute would be 45+ minutes each way; or you want the most comprehensive sports and extracurricular programme on the island.
