Choosing the right hospital before you need it is one of the most underrated things you can do as a Phuket expat. The wrong choice — walking into a hospital without understanding the cost structure, the insurance situation, or the specialist availability — can turn a manageable health issue into an expensive nightmare.

Six years in Phuket, a broken wrist from a scooter incident, two rounds of dengue (yes, twice), and enough conversations with expats at Bangkok Hospital's international lounge to write a guide. Here's what you actually need to know about Phuket's private hospitals.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket is part of the Bangkok Dusit Medical Services (BDMS) group — Thailand's largest private hospital network. It's the go-to for most expats in Phuket, and for good reason: it has the widest range of specialists on the island, the best international patient services, and the most comprehensive direct billing network.

Specialist coverage: Cardiology, oncology, orthopaedics, neurology, urology, gastroenterology, and a dedicated Women's Health Centre. Most specialists were trained in Thailand or abroad and speak functional to excellent English.

International Insurance Desk: On the ground floor. Staff here are experienced at handling the full range of international insurers. For direct billing patients, the process is usually smooth — especially for Cigna, Pacific Cross, AXA, Allianz, and most major insurers.

Honest downsides: It's expensive. An outpatient specialist consultation can run ฿1,500–฿4,500. Room charges for inpatient stays are the highest on the island. If you're self-pay without insurance, even a moderately complex procedure can result in a bill that makes your eyes water.

Siriroj is a private hospital that often flies under the radar for newly arrived expats who head straight to Bangkok Hospital by default. Locals (both Thai and long-term expat) often prefer Siriroj for routine care — the quality is comparable for most conditions and the price is typically 25–40% lower.

Where Siriroj excels: General surgery, orthopaedics, internal medicine, and the dental department. I've had two friends use Siriroj for knee and shoulder surgeries and both were very satisfied with outcomes and costs. The nursing staff is generally attentive and the ward facilities are comfortable if not as premium as Bangkok Hospital.

One genuine limitation: Siriroj has a smaller specialist roster than Bangkok Hospital. For complex oncology, neurosurgery, or cardiac interventions, Bangkok Hospital is the better choice — and may transfer you there anyway.

Who should choose Siriroj: Self-pay patients wanting the best value for routine care, and those whose insurance has direct billing at Siriroj. For most day-to-day expat health needs — infections, minor procedures, dermatology, physio — Siriroj is excellent.

Mission Hospital Phuket: Northern Island Coverage

North Coverage

Mission Hospital Phuket

📍 4/1 Thepkrasattri Road, Kamala area · ☎ 076-237-220

Mission Hospital is a smaller private hospital located in the northern part of Phuket, making it the most convenient option for expats living in Kamala, Surin, Cherng Talay, and parts of Bang Tao who need non-emergency care without driving to Phuket Town.

Good for: GP consultations, minor emergencies, basic diagnostics, and follow-up care when you don't need specialist input. Their accident and emergency unit handles the typical tourist/expat injuries well.

Limitations: Smaller specialist roster. For anything complex — surgery, specialist referrals, complex diagnostics — you'll likely be directed to Bangkok Hospital or Siriroj anyway. Insurance direct billing is available with a smaller network of insurers.

Practical Tips from 6 Years in Phuket

  • Register before you need to. Walk into Bangkok Hospital or Siriroj, register as an international patient, and get your patient ID. It saves time in an emergency. Bangkok Hospital's international patient registration is on the ground floor.
  • The 24-hour pharmacy at Bangkok Hospital on Yaowarat Road is excellent for after-hours medication without a full ER visit for minor issues.
  • For Dengue fever specifically (and you should know about this in Phuket), Bangkok Hospital has an excellent infectious disease unit. Siriroj is also good. Both monitor platelets reliably. If you're self-pay, Siriroj will save you significant money for the typical mild-moderate dengue course.
  • Pre-authorise elective procedures with your insurer before booking at any hospital. Your insurer needs to confirm coverage before the procedure, not after.
  • For bang-to-Phuket Town travel: The bypass road (Route 402) is fastest to both Bangkok Hospital and Siriroj from Bang Tao and Laguna. Budget 20–25 minutes in normal traffic.

Yes. Bangkok Hospital Phuket has the largest English-speaking specialist roster. Siriroj has good English coverage particularly for internal medicine and surgery. Mission Hospital has English-speaking doctors but fewer specialists for complex cases.

Bangkok Hospital Phuket has direct billing with most major international insurers including Cigna, Pacific Cross, AXA, Allianz, and Luma. Siriroj also has direct billing with many insurers. Always confirm your specific plan is on the direct billing list before a non-emergency visit.

Vachira is a government hospital — free/very low cost for Thai citizens, modest fees for foreigners (฿500–฿2,000 consultation). Quality is adequate for non-emergency care but English is limited and wait times are long. For expats, Vachira is best for non-urgent situations or if cost is a primary concern. See our Vachira Hospital guide for more detail.
