I've lived in Phuket for six years. Before that, I spent time in Bangkok. They're both Thailand, but they're completely different expat experiences. The question isn't really "which is better" — it's which is better for you.

Bangkok is a world-class city. Incredible food, world-class hospitals, phenomenal transport, endless entertainment, and one of the most connected international hubs in Asia. Phuket is a tropical island. Beaches, fresh air, a tighter expat community, outdoor lifestyle, and the kind of morning run — the Nai Harn Lake loop at 5:30am with 50 other expats — that you don't get anywhere in Bangkok.

The Fundamental Difference

Phuket

Island lifestyle, beach access, tight expat community
vs

Bangkok

World-class city, urban convenience, more choice

If you want beaches, clean air, outdoor sports, and a connected but manageable expat community — Phuket. If you want the buzz of one of Asia's greatest cities, access to specialist medical care, the BTS/MRT, and infinite restaurant variety — Bangkok. Both have international schools, hospitals, shopping malls, and everything you need. The trade-offs are real.

Bangkok wins on cost, primarily due to superior public transport eliminating car costs, slightly cheaper rentals, and greater competition across food and services. The difference for a comfortable lifestyle is roughly ฿10,000–฿20,000/month in Bangkok's favour — meaningful but not dramatic.

The transport cost reality

In Bangkok with a BTS/MRT card, you can live car-free spending ฿2,000–฿4,000/month on transport. In Phuket, you need a scooter (฿2,500–฿4,000/month) minimum, or a car (฿6,000–฿12,000/month). This single factor explains most of the cost difference between the two cities.

Who Should Choose Phuket?

Choose Phuket if you...

  • Want beach access as part of daily life
  • Value clean air and outdoor lifestyle
  • Are retiring and want established expat community
  • Want Muay Thai, diving, sailing, outdoor fitness
  • Work remotely and want lifestyle over urban buzz
  • Have school-age children (BISP, UWC, HeadStart)
  • Want smaller-town feel with all mod cons
  • Plan 5+ years and want longer-term community

Choose Bangkok if you...

  • Work in business requiring in-person meetings
  • Need access to specialist medical care regularly
  • Value cultural events, live music, theatre
  • Want the widest possible school choice
  • Prefer not owning a car/scooter
  • Are on a strict budget (Bangkok is cheaper)
  • Love international food variety and fine dining
  • Want to feel in a global city, not island life

Visa and Immigration

Both Phuket and Bangkok are covered by the same Thai immigration system — there's no location-specific visa. However, practicalities differ:

  • Phuket Immigration: Located at the Chalong Circle bypass road — manageable queues for a city of this size. Good for Non-OA, Non-B, DTV, tourist extensions. Address: 351 Phuket Road area (new office near Chalong Circle).
  • Bangkok Immigration: Chaeng Wattana is notorious for very long queues. Many Bangkok expats use visa agents specifically to avoid it.
  • Non-OA bank requirement: In both cities you need ฿800,000 in a Thai bank. KBank's Yaowarat Road branch in Phuket is the go-to; Bangkok Bank and KBank both have convenient Bangkok branches near expat areas.

The DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) for remote workers works equally well in both cities. Full DTV guide here.

The Verdict

For retirees: Phuket, especially Rawai/Nai Harn or Chalong. The beach, established community, and lower population density make retirement more comfortable than Bangkok's congestion.

For families: Depends on children's ages. BISP, UWC and HeadStart are excellent schools. If you need more curriculum options or elite university-prep schools, Bangkok's wider choice is an advantage.

For remote workers: Phuket wins on lifestyle; Bangkok wins on urban buzz and slightly lower costs. The DTV works in both.

For business professionals: Bangkok. Phuket has limited business infrastructure — meetings, networking events, regional HQs are all Bangkok-centric.
