Phuket has a triathlon problem — and by that I mean, once you start, it's very hard to stop. The combination of warm open water, cycling roads that range from flat Bang Tao coast to grinding south Phuket hills, and a running community that gets up at 5am to beat the heat means the island is one of Asia's best triathlon training bases. The Laguna Phuket Triathlon has been running since 1994 and is still the highlight of the island's sports calendar.

Whether you're a seasoned triathlete looking for a training base or a complete beginner wondering if Phuket triathlon life is for you, this is the guide I wish I'd had when I arrived.

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon

The Laguna Phuket Triathlon (LPT) is one of Asia's oldest and most loved triathlon events. It's been staged at the Laguna Phuket resort complex in Bang Tao every November since 1994, and has attracted international fields including professional athletes alongside thousands of age-groupers who make the annual pilgrimage specifically for this event. If you live in Phuket, doing the LPT at least once is practically a rite of passage in the expat sporting community.

The LPT Course

The course is unique — not a standard Olympic or IRONMAN distance. The swim is 1.8km in Bang Tao Bay (calm ocean water, starts at the beach in front of Laguna). The bike is 55km through the north Phuket road network, passing through Cherng Talay, Thalang, and the plantation roads that loop around the Laguna resort area — rolling terrain with no extreme climbs. The run is 12km through the Laguna resort grounds, with a famous finish line on the beach. The course is scenic, well-supported, and genuinely fun.

Training for Triathlon in Phuket

Phuket is a legitimate triathlon training base. The conditions are warm year-round, the open water is outstanding, and the cycling terrain covers every type of effort you'd need for race preparation. The main challenge is the heat — and managing training load so you're not burning out in 33°C humidity every day.

Open Water Swimming

The triathlon community primarily uses Bang Tao Bay for open-water swim training — typically early morning sessions before the beach gets busy. The water is calm during high season (November–April), visibility is good, and the distance from the shore to the buoy line gives you a measured 800–1,800m swim depending on your route. A small group of expat triathletes organises morning swims here most weekdays; ask in the Phuket Triathlon Facebook group to join.

Nai Harn Bay is popular for south Phuket residents — smaller, more sheltered, and a beautiful location to swim with clear water. The Nai Harn open water swim group meets on Saturday mornings. Kamala Bay offers another option for central-west Phuket swimmers. During the monsoon (May–October), most west-coast swimming moves to pools; the triathlon community uses the Laguna resort's 50m lap pool, hotel pools, and the municipal pool in Phuket Town.

Cycling Routes

Phuket's road cycling is divided between the flat north and the hilly south. For triathlon-specific training:

  • LPT race simulation: The Cherng Talay–Thalang–Laguna loop (55km) replicates the actual race course. Low traffic on plantation roads in the early morning.
  • South Phuket hills: Rawai → Nai Harn → Kata → Karon → Chalong → Rawai loop (40–50km) with solid climbing. This is where you build the legs for any hilly race.
  • Endurance flat: Bang Tao beach road and the Laguna access roads are ideal for tempo efforts and brick sessions (bike→run transitions).

Group cycling rides exist in Phuket — the Phuket Cycling Club and Phuket Triathlon Club both organise Saturday morning road rides. Typical pace is social-to-moderate — welcome to all fitness levels. Meeting points are usually at the Laguna area for north-route rides.

Running for Triathletes

The heat management challenge is most acute for running. See our full Phuket running guide for training routes and heat strategy. For triathlete brick sessions specifically — a 30–60 minute run immediately after your long bike ride — Laguna resort roads and the Bang Tao beach road are convenient from the cycling routes and relatively flat. Nai Harn Lake (2.5km loop) is the go-to for interval sessions in the south.

The Phuket Triathlon Community

The triathlon community in Phuket is one of the most active sporting communities on the island — and genuinely welcoming to newcomers. The main hub is the "Phuket Triathlon" Facebook group, which has thousands of members and is active with training announcements, race reports, gear advice, and social events. If you're new to triathlon or new to Phuket, posting an introduction in the group will typically get you training partners and route advice within 24 hours.

Several professional coaches and coaching groups operate in Phuket — working with age-groupers targeting the LPT or IRONMAN events. Coaching costs range from 5,000–15,000 THB per month for structured programming with group sessions. If you're serious about racing, this is worth exploring — training smarter in the heat makes a big difference to performance and enjoyment.

Gear and Bike Shops

Phuket has several bike shops that service road bikes, triathlon bikes, and provide fitting services. The shops concentrated in Cherng Talay and near Laguna serve the triathlon community well. For swim gear — goggles, wetsuits (less needed in warm Thai waters but useful for open water confidence), and tri suits — the sports shops at Central Festival Phuket carry basics, and more specialised gear can be ordered from Lazada or imported. Triathlon bikes are available at Phuket bike shops but selection is limited — consider bringing your bike if you're relocating long-term.

Getting Started: Your First Phuket Triathlon

If you're not yet a triathlete but Phuket has inspired you to try, here's the honest starting path. The LPT is achievable as a first triathlon if you give yourself 6–12 months of structured preparation. The relay option (team of 3, one discipline each) is a perfect way to experience the event without doing all three disciplines yourself — and a great social entry point into the community.

For a complete beginner: start with the Phuket Triathlon Facebook group, find a beginner swim session at Bang Tao Bay or a master swim class at one of the hotel pools, get on a bike (rental bikes are available from shops near Laguna — good enough for training), and commit to running 3 times per week in the early morning. The community will meet you where you are.
