Saturday morning: 8am Thailand time, which means it's 2am in London and your team is playing a must-win Premier League match. Or maybe it's Sunday at 3am and you want to watch the Champions League final. Or it's a sunny Thursday afternoon and you're trying to find somewhere with a decent screen for the F1 qualifying session.
If you're an expat in Phuket, you've probably already worked out that the time zone makes watching live sport a bit of a commitment. But the island has a surprisingly solid sports bar scene — from the full-on entertainment strip of Patong to quieter neighbourhood spots in Bang Tao, Rawai, and Chalong. Here's the honest rundown.
Understanding the Time Zone Problem
Thailand is UTC+7, which means:
- UK evening kick-offs (7:45–8pm UK): 2:45–3am in Phuket
- UK weekend afternoon matches (3pm): 9pm Phuket time — manageable
- Champions League (European evening): 2am–4am
- Australian sport: Usually early evening Thailand time — convenient
- F1 Races (European): 2–4pm Sunday in summer, 8pm in winter
- NFL Sunday: 2am–8am Monday morning Thailand
Most serious sports bars in Phuket will open late for major events — call ahead to confirm. A handful of establishments have a dedicated late-night sports viewer crowd who set their sleep schedules around their football team.
Patong: The Main Sports Bar Hub
Like it or loathe it, Patong has the best concentration of sports bars on the island. The Bangla Road and surrounding streets have a dozen venues with multiple large screens. It's not subtle, but if you want guaranteed coverage of any major sporting event, Patong delivers.
Phuket's best-known sports bar — multiple large screens, strong sound system, reliable satellite coverage of EPL, Champions League, La Liga, rugby, and most major world sport events. The atmosphere on a big Champions League night is hard to beat. Opens late for major matches. Food is pub-standard; come for the sport, not the menu.
Classic Irish pub with reliable Guinness (rare in Phuket), large screens, and a strong European football following. Rugby coverage is particularly good — Six Nations, Champions Cup, and World Cup knockout matches are all covered. Expat regulars make it feel more neighbourhood pub than tourist trap.
More expensive than the local sports bars but has reliable satellite coverage and a comfortable setting. Particularly good for NFL, NBA, and US sports which the local bars don't always prioritise. If you're American and suffering withdrawal, this is your best bet in Patong.
Bang Tao & Cherng Talay: The Expat-Friendly Option
Most expats in the Bang Tao and Laguna area would rather not drive to Patong for every football match. Fortunately, the area around Boat Avenue has several solid sports bars that have evolved specifically to serve the resident expat community here.
Craft beer on tap (including a rotating selection of Thai craft brews) and multiple screens showing EPL, Champions League, and weekend rugby. The Bang Tao expat crowd makes this a genuine local — you'll see the same faces every weekend. Better food than most sports bars, notably the burgers. Gets packed for Sunday afternoon EPL.
A proper neighbourhood sports bar — unpretentious, well-priced, with a mix of expat regulars and locals who've adopted it. Good coverage of EPL, La Liga, Six Nations, and the Super Rugby Pacific. The owner is an Australian rugby fan, so SANZAAR competition coverage is especially good. Opening times vary by fixtures — follow their Facebook.
Rawai & Chalong: South Phuket's Sporting Scene
The south of Phuket has its own cluster of sports-bar-meets-local-pub venues that have become fixtures for the large expat communities in Rawai, Nai Harn, and Chalong.
One of Chalong's longstanding expat bars with reliable football and rugby coverage. The Rawai and Chalong expat community often drives here for big matches rather than going to Patong. Good happy hour deals. The food is simple but honest. Opens early for morning kick-offs (by Phuket standards).
Not a pure sports bar but shows major matches on outdoor screens — which means watching football with your feet near the sand and a cold Chang in hand. Coverage is more selective than a dedicated venue but the atmosphere for afternoon and evening kick-offs is genuinely special. The Rawai seafood market is right next door for pre-match fuelling.
Kata & Karon: The Tourist Belt Sports Scene
Kata and Karon have a more tourist-focused bar scene but still have decent sports bar options — particularly relevant for expats who've settled in the Kata area.
Hemingway's on Kata Beach Road is a reliable option — screens, sports coverage, cold beers, and a mix of expats and tourists. Better atmosphere than many Patong bars for watching sport without the full Bangla Road chaos.

Practical Tips for Watching Sport in Phuket
- Check fixtures in advance: Most venues post their match schedules on Facebook or Instagram. Not all bars open for every match — early season weekday games may not be screened everywhere.
- Grab for late nights: If you're watching a 2am kick-off, pre-book your Grab home before you start drinking. The island's late-night transport can be unreliable after 3am.
- Cover charges: For very big matches (Champions League final, World Cup knockout rounds), some bars charge 100–300 THB entry. Check in advance.
- Sound quality matters: Some bars have good screens but terrible speakers. If sound quality matters, Timber Rock and Scruffy Murphy's are the most reliable in Patong.
- Food before midnight: Kitchen closing times are usually midnight in most sports bars. If you're watching a late match, eat before or keep it to bar snacks.
- Motorbike + late night = bad idea: Phuket roads after 2am, with alcohol involved, are a real risk. Use Grab or arrange a designated driver. See our Phuket road safety guide.
