🛒 Key Shopping Facts: Phuket
Shopping in Phuket: The Honest Picture
After seven years on the island, I'd say Phuket is the best-stocked province in Thailand outside of Bangkok for imported Western goods — but it still isn't like being back home. You can find most things, but at a price. Thai staples are exceptionally affordable. Imported cheese, wine and specialty items cost 2–4x what you'd pay at home. Fresh local seafood and produce are outstanding value.
The good news: online delivery has transformed expat shopping in the past three years. Lazada and Shopee reach all areas of Phuket within 2–5 days, and platforms like GrabMart and Foodpanda do same-day grocery delivery in most main areas. IKEA delivers to Phuket now too, which was a genuine game-changer for the villa-rental crowd.
Supermarkets: Where to Shop for What
Rimping Supermarket
Two Phuket branches: Chalong (Chao Fa West) and Cherng Talay (near Boat Avenue). Best selection of imported Western products on the island — cheese, wine, specialty meats, organic produce, international brands. Premium prices.
Makro
On the Bypass Road (Thepkrasattri Road), convenient for most of Phuket. Membership required (free). Best prices for large quantities — great for large families, villa cooks, or stocking a rental. Limited imported range.
Tops Supermarket
Inside Central Festival (Phuket Town) and several other locations. Good all-round selection, better imported range than Big C, well-refrigerated, reliable quality. Mid-range pricing.
Big C
Multiple locations across Phuket. Largest floorspace, cheapest Thai products, weakest imported range. Best for household goods, cleaning products, basic groceries, and low-cost fresh Thai produce.
Villa Market
Boat Avenue, Bang Tao. Premium supermarket with the best wine and cheese selection on the island. The go-to for Bang Tao/Laguna residents who want Western grocery shopping. Prices are the highest of any supermarket on Phuket.
Gourmet Market
Central Floresta (Kathu). Good organic produce section, premium imported goods. Smaller than Rimping but with a well-curated selection. Convenient for Kata/Karon residents.
