Escaping the Island — Without Getting on a Plane

After seven years in Rawai, I've done every day trip worth doing from Phuket — some a dozen times. The island is brilliant, but when you live here you learn to appreciate the region around it just as much. Within three hours' drive you have UNESCO-worthy limestone karsts, virgin jungle, empty beaches, a world-class national park, and one of the most dramatic lake landscapes in Southeast Asia.

This guide covers the best road trips and day excursions from Phuket, honest about what's a quick hour trip and what really deserves an overnight. I've included real driving times, approximate costs, and the tips that separate a great day out from a mediocre tourist experience.

The Best Trips by Category

Phang Nga Bay limestone karsts Most Popular

Phang Nga Bay

The limestone karsts rising from emerald water are genuinely spectacular. James Bond Island (Khao Phing Kan) is crowded but worth it once. Ko Panyi floating Muslim village is the better stop. For expats: skip the speedboat tour and take a sea kayak through the caves instead.

1.5 hrs drive ฿1,200–2,500/person Day trip ✓
Khao Sok National Park jungle lake Best Overnight

Khao Sok National Park

The Cheow Lan Lake (Ratchaprapha Dam) is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been — and I've lived in Southeast Asia for over a decade. Floating bamboo huts on the lake, morning mist through limestone peaks. This is not a day trip. Come for at least two nights.

2.5 hrs drive ฿2,500–5,000/night Overnight recommended
Khao Lak beach Underrated

Khao Lak

Only 80km north but feels like a different world — calm, uncrowded, genuinely beautiful beaches. Bang Niang Beach is excellent. Khao Lak is also the departure point for Similan Islands liveaboard dive trips (November–April). A perfect half-day drive.

1.5 hrs drive ฿500–1,500/day Day trip ✓
Railay Beach Krabi limestone cliffs Rock Climbing

Krabi & Railay Beach

Two options: drive to Krabi Town (2.5hrs) and take a longtail to Railay, or take the Rassada Pier seasonal ferry direct. Railay has some of the best sport climbing in Southeast Asia — Thaiwand Wall is world-famous. Ao Nang is more accessible for non-climbers.

2.5 hrs drive ฿2,000–4,000/person Day trip / overnight
Koh Yao Noi island landscape Slow Travel

Koh Yao Noi

Drive to Bang Rong Pier in the north of Phuket (30 min) then a 30-minute ferry. This small Muslim island has zero beach clubs and zero resorts of note — which is exactly the point. Rubber plantations, fishing boats, sea kayak rentals, a handful of excellent local restaurants. Wonderful half-day.

30 min ferry ฿500–1,000 return Day trip ✓
Penang Georgetown street art Visa Run

Penang, Malaysia

The classic Phuket visa run. Regular minivans (฿1,200–1,800 return) depart from near Patong and Phuket Town. Georgetown is genuinely beautiful — excellent food, incredible street art, Batu Ferringhi beach. The Penang Thai consulate issues Non-OA visas and most single/multiple-entry tourist visas.

~5 hrs drive ฿1,200–2,500 transport Overnight recommended

How to Get Around: Car, Tour or Grab?

For most day trips from Phuket, you have three realistic options:

MethodBest ForCostFlexibilityRecommended?
Rented Car (self-drive)Khao Lak, Phang Nga drive, Khao Sok฿1,200–1,800/day + fuelHigh ✓Best option
Minivan Tour (organised)Phang Nga Bay, Similan Islands, Khao Sok฿1,500–3,500/personLowGood for first-timers
Grab/BoltShort hops within Phuket only฿200–600MediumNot for road trips
Private Driver (chartered)Full-day excursions, airport transfers฿2,500–4,000/dayHigh ✓Great for groups
MotorbikeKhao Lak if you're experienced฿250–400/day + fuelHighOnly experienced riders

💡 Car Rental Tips for Road Trips

  • Book through a local agent rather than international brands — typically ฿800–1,200/day vs ฿2,000+ for the same car
  • Always take the full insurance upgrade (add ฿200–300/day) — it's worth it for unfamiliar roads
  • Phang Nga Bay road (Route 4) is easy motorway standard. Khao Sok requires navigating the bypass, but it's well-signed
  • Fuel: PTT petrol stations are everywhere. Fill up before heading into Khao Sok — limited options in the national park
  • Google Maps works perfectly for all these routes. Download offline maps for Khao Sok

What the Guidebooks Don't Tell You

Phang Nga Bay: Do the kayak, skip the speedboat tour

The organised speedboat-and-James-Bond-Island tours are overcrowded and rushed. Book a sea kayak half-day tour through the hongs (hidden lagoons) instead — smaller groups, quieter, much more memorable. John Gray's Sea Canoe pioneered this and is still the best operator.

Khao Sok: Don't stay in the village — stay on the lake

The Khao Sok village (near the park entrance) has cheap guesthouses but the lake (Cheow Lan, 65km into the park) is a completely different experience. Floating raft houses with solar power and longtail boats — this is what the Instagram photos are. Budget at least ฿2,500–4,000 per night for a decent raft house.

Koh Yao Noi: Take the Bang Rong Pier route

Most visitors take the tourist ferry from Rassada Pier (Phuket Town) but it's slower and more expensive. Bang Rong Pier in Paklok (north Phuket, 35 minutes from Rawai) has regular local longtail/speedboats every 30–60 minutes for about ฿100–150 each way. Much better.

Penang visa run: go for two nights minimum

Going to Penang just for a visa stamp and driving back the same day is a waste of one of the most charming cities in Malaysia. Georgetown's heritage streets, hawker food (best chicken rice and char kway teow in Southeast Asia), and the Penang Hill railway are all worth your time. Budget two nights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island) is the most popular. For something less touristy, Khao Lak beaches or a day on Koh Yao Noi are better choices for expats who've done the main circuit.
Not necessarily. Grab/Bolt work for short trips, and Phang Nga Bay and Khao Lak are easily done by minivan tour. For Khao Sok you really want a car or join a tour for the overnight.
About 160km, roughly 2.5 hours by car via Highway 401. Best as an overnight to fully experience the lake and jungle.
Yes, daytime driving on main highways is generally fine in a car. Avoid night driving. Always have a valid Thai or international driving licence and car insurance.
November to April (dry season) is ideal for most destinations. Khao Sok is accessible year-round but the lake is most beautiful in dry season.
