The Phi Phi Reality Check
The Phi Phi Islands are genuinely beautiful — the scenery around Ko Phi Phi Leh (the uninhabited island with Maya Bay) is as dramatic as any island in the world. But Ko Phi Phi Don, the main island with accommodation and restaurants, is extremely commercially developed and can feel overwhelming in peak season.
As a Phuket resident since 2018, I've done Phi Phi about seven times. My honest take: Ko Phi Phi Leh and the diving are world-class. Ko Phi Phi Don village is best enjoyed with lowered expectations. Go for the snorkelling, the underwater world, and the views — not for a beach holiday.

Should You Stay or Day-Trip?
Day Trip (from Phuket)
Feasible but a long day. You'll arrive ~9–10am and need to leave by 4–5pm. Midday is the hottest, busiest time.

- Home in your own bed
- Miss evenings and early mornings
- Most crowded time of day on the beaches
One or Two Nights
Gives you early morning beaches (before day-trippers arrive, around 9am) and Phi Phi evenings, which are relaxed and beautiful.
- Sunrise swim at Ao Lo Dalam is magical
- Watch sunset from the viewpoint
- Budget guesthouses from ฿600/night
- Allows Bida Nok night diving
The Highlights Worth Your Time
Maya Bay (Ko Phi Phi Leh)
The most famous bay in Thailand — the movie "The Beach" was filmed here. Re-opened in 2022 after a 4-year environmental closure. The recovery has been remarkable: coral is returning, the beach is cleaner. Boats can no longer anchor in the bay — you swim in. Far less chaotic than before 2018. Still extraordinary.
Diving: Bida Nok & Bida Nai
Two limestone islands south of Ko Phi Phi Leh. This is some of the best diving in Thailand — whale sharks (December–April), leopard sharks, reef sharks, huge schools of barracuda. The walls at Bida Nok have beautiful soft coral. Any dive operator on Ko Phi Phi Don runs trips here. About ฿1,200–1,500 for a 2-tank dive.
Phi Phi Don Viewpoint
40-minute hike from the village (steep, but rewarded). The panoramic view of the two bays flanking the narrow isthmus is the most-photographed view in southern Thailand. Go at sunrise (before 6:30am) for completely deserted steps and golden light. Worth every sweaty step.
Viking Cave (Tham Phaya Nak)
A large sea cave on the north-east coast of Ko Phi Phi Leh. Famous for swifts' nests harvested for bird's nest soup — an industry worth millions per year. Ancient paintings of sailing vessels on the walls (hence the name). Most speedboat tours include a pass-by.
