For years, digital nomads in Phuket operated in a legal grey zone — tourist visa, laptop open, fingers crossed. Then Thailand introduced the DTV (Destination Thailand Visa) in 2024, and suddenly there was a legitimate, affordable route specifically designed for remote workers. For most nomads, it's the answer you've been waiting for. For higher earners, the LTR Professional visa is better. And for everyone else, the old tourist visa route is becoming increasingly risky.
This guide compares all three main options — DTV, LTR and SMART — against each other, tells you what documents you actually need, and gives you the Phuket-specific context (immigration office location, extension process, tax implications) that most general guides skip.
📋 Quick Decision Guide
- Remote worker, most people: DTV Visa — ฿10,000, easy to get, 180-day stays
- High earner (฿80k+ USD/year): LTR WFT Professional — ฿50,000, 10 years, 17% flat tax
- Tech startup / investor: SMART Visa — free, 4-year stay, for qualifying businesses
- Planning multiple shorter trips: Tourist visa still works for under-180-day stays (but less legal certainty)
- Staying 180+ days/year: Think carefully about 2024 tax rule — get professional advice

DTV Visa: Everything You Need to Know for Phuket
The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) launched mid-2024 and immediately became the go-to for remote workers arriving in Phuket. Here's how it works in practice.
DTV Requirements
- Employment proof: Employment letter from a foreign company, or freelance contracts/invoices showing income from non-Thai sources
- Financial proof: Bank statements showing ฿500,000 (approximately $14,000 USD / €13,000 EUR) — or equivalent in foreign currency
- Health insurance: Minimum ฿40,000 coverage (approximately $1,100 USD) — a low bar that most travel insurance meets
- Passport validity: At least 18 months remaining
- Application location: Thai embassy or consulate outside Thailand — cannot apply from within Thailand
DTV in Phuket: Practical Details
Once you have your DTV and arrive in Phuket, you get 180 days on entry. Before expiry, visit Phuket Immigration Office at 502 Phuket Road (open Mon–Fri 8:30am–4:30pm, closed public holidays) to extend for another 180 days. Extension fee: ฿1,900. Total potential stay: 360 days without leaving Thailand.
After 360 days, you must leave Thailand and re-enter to reset. Many DTV holders do a short trip to Penang, Singapore or Kuala Lumpur for this purpose — often combining it with a visa run social trip. The Penang Thai consulate in Georgetown is the most popular for Phuket-based expats.
What You Can and Cannot Do on a DTV
Permitted: Working remotely for foreign employers or clients, running an online business (foreign clients), receiving passive income (investments, royalties)
Not permitted: Working for Thai companies or clients, receiving Thai-source income without a work permit, physical labour or any work that requires presence in Thailand for a Thai business
LTR Visa: Worth It for High Earners
The Long-Term Resident (LTR) Work From Thailand Professional category is the premium nomad visa for those who qualify. The ฿50,000 fee is steep upfront, but the package is genuinely attractive:
- 10-year visa with annual reporting (vs DTV's need to leave and re-enter after 360 days)
- Flat 17% income tax rate — potentially saving tens of thousands of THB per year vs standard rates up to 35%
- Fast-track immigration at Suvarnabhumi and Phuket International Airport
- 90-day reporting exempted (replaced by annual report)
- Multiple re-entry permit included
LTR WFT Requirements (2026)
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Annual income (employment) | Minimum USD 80,000 ($80k) per year from foreign employer |
| Work experience | Minimum 2 years in current field |
| Employer type | Listed company OR established private company (>$150M revenue or established 3+ years) |
| Health insurance | Minimum USD 50,000 coverage with Thai hospital coverage |
| Application fee | ฿50,000 (USD ~$1,400) paid to BOI |
| Where to apply | BOI One Stop Service Centre, Bangkok — or via designated agents |
SMART Visa: For Tech Founders and Investors
The SMART Visa is aimed at a narrow set of highly qualified professionals and investors in Thailand's target industries (biotech, digital, food processing, aviation, automation, etc.). It's free to apply and gives a 4-year stay, but the qualifying criteria are strict and the BOI application process is complex.
For a typical digital nomad, the SMART Visa is not relevant. It's designed for: tech executives, senior engineers in qualifying industries, tech startup founders who have received investment from BOI-approved investors, and significant investors (฿20M+). If you're building a tech company in Phuket with regional ambitions, it may be worth exploring via a BOI-registered consultant.
The 2024 Tax Rule: Critical for Longer Stays
⚠️ Tax Change — Effective 2024
From 1 January 2024, Thailand taxes foreign income remitted to Thailand in the same calendar year you earn it — regardless of visa type. If you spend 180+ days in Thailand and transfer foreign earnings to a Thai bank account in the same year, this income is subject to Thai income tax at rates up to 35%. The LTR visa's flat 17% rate is the main mitigation tool. Seek advice from a Phuket-based tax accountant (Phuket Revenue Department: Narisara Road, Phuket Town) before structuring your finances.
