It had to happen to me exactly once — locked out of my Rawai villa at 11pm on a Sunday. My cleaner had the spare key. My cleaner was in Phang Nga for a family event. The estate security guard's sympathy was real but her master keys were not. It took three Facebook group posts, one borrowed ladder, and a locksmith who arrived in 40 minutes to solve the problem.
The lesson: have a spare key sorted before you need it, know your estate's emergency access procedures, and save a locksmith's LINE contact in your phone. This guide covers all of this — plus where to get keys cut, how much things cost, and whether a smart lock might be a better solution for the way you live in Phuket.
Where to Get Keys Cut in Phuket
Hardware Shops and Key Kiosks
Key cutting in Phuket is handled by small hardware shops (ร้านกุญแจ) and standalone key-cutting kiosks found throughout every main area of the island. They're typically fast (5–10 minutes for a standard key), cheap, and reliably accurate for standard domestic key profiles.
For standard house keys, costs run 30–80 THB per copy. The person cuts the key in front of you on a small grinding machine and tests it on the original lock if you have it, or cuts to profile otherwise. For most Thai-standard rim lock, padlock, and deadbolt keys this works perfectly.
Where to Find Key Cutting by Area
- Phuket Town: Near the Ranong Road morning market and along Tilok Uthit Road — multiple small hardware shops, very competitive pricing (30–50 THB/key)
- Chalong: Hardware shops near Big C South and along Chao Fa West Road; HomePro at the Route 402/Chalong intersection
- Rawai / Nai Harn: Several hardware shops on Wiset Road and Sai Yuan Road in Rawai village
- Bang Tao / Cherng Talay: Hardware shops near the Makro and HomePro on Route 402 (Thepkrasattri Road); also near the Srisoonthorn Road village area
- Patong: Shops on and around Rat-U-Thit Road; slightly higher prices given tourist area location
- Kata / Karon: Key cutting available near Kata Road hardware shops and at the Karon Circle area
HomePro and Index Living Mall
Both HomePro (Chalong and Route 402/Thalang locations) and Index Living Mall on Route 402 offer key cutting services near the entrance. Slightly pricier than standalone hardware shops (60–100 THB for standard keys) but convenient when you're already there for other hardware needs. HomePro also sells key lockboxes, padlocks, and deadbolts.
Specialist and High-Security Keys
Double-sided keys, high-security profile keys (Mul-T-Lock, Medeco, EVVA), and laser-cut keys require a specialist locksmith rather than a roadside kiosk. Cost: 150–400 THB per copy depending on key type. Not all hardware shops have the equipment — ask around or search for "locksmith specialist Phuket" to find shops that handle security key profiles.

What to Do If You're Locked Out in Phuket
Step 1: Check with Your Estate or Landlord
For managed estates in Bang Tao, Laguna, Rawai, Kamala, and Cherng Talay, the 24-hour security desk is your first call. They may have a master key for the common entrance gates, and sometimes for villa units. Your estate management company may also have an emergency contact who carries keys. This is usually the fastest and cheapest solution — potentially free.
Step 2: Contact Your Cleaner or Property Manager
If you've been following the advice in our home cleaning guide and have a regular cleaner who holds a spare key (stored in a lockbox or given directly), this is the second call. Property managers for holiday rental villas in Phuket almost always hold a spare key set.
Step 3: Call a Locksmith
Search Facebook for "locksmith Phuket" or "ช่างกุญแจภูเก็ต" — you'll find multiple services with phone numbers and LINE IDs. Several 24-hour operations cover the whole island. Response time from Chalong or Phuket Town to most residential areas is typically 30–60 minutes. Daytime call-outs (08:00–20:00) cost 500–1,000 THB to open a standard door. Night call-outs cost 800–2,000 THB.
Save a locksmith contact now, before you need it. The time to find a good number is a Tuesday afternoon, not 11pm on a Saturday when you're standing outside your gate.
What NOT to Do
Don't try to force a door or jimmy a window in Phuket — standard Thai locksets are surprisingly robust and you're more likely to damage the door or window frame than open it. Don't leave your house "in case" by leaving a window unsecured — the combination of opportunistic theft and strong wet-season winds makes this a bad idea. And don't assume your estate security team has unlimited master key access — most only have keys to common areas, not individual villa units.
Smart Locks in Phuket: Are They Worth It?
Digital keypad and fingerprint locks have become significantly more popular in Phuket over the past few years, driven partly by the growth of holiday rental management (no physical key handover needed for guests) and partly by expats who got tired of the key-cutting and spare key drama.
Types of Smart Lock Available
The most popular in Phuket are: keypad deadbolts (4–8 digit code entry, works without a phone), fingerprint deadbolts (register up to 10–20 fingerprints, fastest entry), and WiFi-connected smart locks (controlled via app, can issue temporary codes to guests, audit log of entries). For rental villas in Kamala, Surin, and Bang Tao, WiFi-connected models like Samsung SHP-DP920, Yale Conexis, or DESSMANN S1 Pro are increasingly standard.
Cost and Where to Buy
Smart locks in Phuket are available at HomePro (Chalong/Thalang), Index Living Mall (Route 402), IT stores in Central Festival Phuket, and on Lazada/Shopee with delivery to the island. Entry-level digital deadbolts start at 2,500–4,000 THB. Mid-range fingerprint + app models run 5,000–9,000 THB. Professional hotel-grade smart locks for rental properties run 10,000–20,000 THB. Installation by a locksmith costs 500–1,500 THB on top of hardware.
Humidity Consideration
In coastal areas of Phuket, check that any smart lock you buy is rated for humid environments. Salt air and high humidity can corrode cheaper electronic components. Look for IP65 or better water resistance ratings, and stick to reputable brands (Samsung, Yale, Kaadas) rather than no-name online imports.

After six years in Phuket, this is the key access setup I'd recommend for a permanent resident in a villa or standalone property:
- Main entry: Smart lock (keypad minimum) so you never need a physical key for your own front door
- Gate or perimeter: Digital gate code panel — again, no physical key needed for day-to-day access
- Lockbox on external wall: Contains one physical emergency key, accessible by code to your cleaner, maintenance team, and trusted guests. Costs 700–1,500 THB at HomePro plus 30 minutes to install
- Spare key set with trusted person: Neighbour, close friend, or estate management. Not just the cleaner
- Locksmith contact saved in phone: Find them before you need them
This setup costs 4,000–12,000 THB to implement for a standard 2–3 bedroom villa and eliminates the anxiety of key management almost completely. For holiday rental properties, it also makes guest access significantly simpler — which connects to broader property management considerations covered in our Phuket housing guide.
