For diving accidents / DCS: Bangkok Hospital Phuket (hyperbaric chamber) — 076-254-425
Quick Summary
- Bangkok Hospital Phuket: JCI-accredited, 600+ beds, best for complex cases, cardiac, cancer, DCS, surgery — Hongyok Utis Road, 076-254-425
- Phuket International Hospital: Well-equipped, competitive prices, good for routine and emergencies — Bypass Road (Chalermprakiat Ror 9), 076-249-400
- Both hospitals: English-speaking specialists, international insurance direct billing, 24/7 A&E
- The honest answer: For most routine care, both are fine. For complex or serious cases, Bangkok Hospital Phuket edges ahead.
When I first arrived in Rawai in 2018, I went to whichever hospital my first Thai landlord recommended — which turned out to be a good one but not necessarily the right fit for my needs. After seven years and a fair amount of time in waiting rooms myself and with fellow expats, I've developed a clearer picture of how Phuket's two main private hospitals compare.
The honest answer: both are genuinely good hospitals by Southeast Asian standards. The choice depends on your location, your condition, your insurance, and your priorities. Here's the breakdown.

Phuket International Hospital (not to be confused with Bangkok Hospital's international wing) is a well-established private hospital on the main Bypass Road. For most expat healthcare needs — GP visits, minor emergencies, routine surgery, maternity — it's a very capable hospital at costs typically 20–30% lower than Bangkok Hospital.
Strengths
- Lower costs vs Bangkok Hospital on most procedures
- Good location on Bypass Road — accessible from most of Phuket
- Direct billing with major insurers
- Less bureaucracy for routine care
- Strong maternity department
- English-speaking staff
Limitations
- No JCI accreditation
- Fewer sub-specialists for complex conditions
- No hyperbaric chamber (go to BHP for DCS)
- Limited oncology capability vs BHP

Which Hospital Should You Use? — Decision Guide
| Situation | Go To | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Chest pain / suspected cardiac event | Bangkok Hospital (BHP) | Best cardiac centre in Phuket |
| Scuba diving accident / DCS | Bangkok Hospital (BHP) | Only hyperbaric chamber in Phuket |
| Cancer diagnosis / oncology referral | Bangkok Hospital (BHP) | Full oncology team, radiation |
| Major trauma / serious accident | Bangkok Hospital (BHP) | Larger ICU, trauma capabilities |
| Routine GP consultation | Either — or Siriroj/Vachira (cheaper) | Cost-saving possible at PIH or public hospitals |
| Minor A&E (cuts, sprains, small fractures) | PIH or nearest available | PIH slightly faster & cheaper for non-critical |
| Maternity / childbirth | Either — PIH has good maternity ward | PIH slightly lower cost, BHP for high-risk pregnancies |
| Elective surgery (knee, hip, etc.) | Either — compare quotes | PIH 15–20% cheaper; BHP for complex joint surgery |
| You live in Bang Tao / Kamala area | Bangkok Hospital Siriroj (076-361-888, Cherng Talay) | Nearest Bangkok Hospital branch — strong for most needs |
| Uninsured — cost is the priority | Vachira (076-361-234) or Siriroj | Government hospitals — much cheaper, adequate for routine care |
Don't Forget: Bangkok Hospital Siriroj
There's a third key option for north Phuket residents: Bangkok Hospital Siriroj on Thalang Road (076-361-888), near Cherng Talay. This is a Bangkok Hospital Group facility — same brand quality as BHP but positioned in the Bang Tao/Laguna area. For expats living in the north (Bang Tao, Surin, Kamala, Laguna estate), Siriroj is often the most practical first stop rather than driving to central Phuket Town.
Vachira Phuket Hospital (Yaowarat Road, 076-361-234) is the main public hospital and significantly cheaper than either private option — though with longer waits and more limited English. Fine for routine care, vaccinations, and follow-up appointments.
Get the Right Health Insurance for Phuket
Direct billing at Bangkok Hospital and Phuket International Hospital requires the right international health insurance. Compare plans for Phuket expats.
Compare Health Insurance Quotes →Insurance and Direct Billing
Both Bangkok Hospital Phuket and Phuket International Hospital have direct billing arrangements with the main international health insurers used by Phuket expats: Cigna, Pacific Cross, AXA, Allianz, and Seven Seas. This means you can walk in, show your insurance card, and the hospital bills your insurer directly — no upfront payment required (subject to your policy terms).
Always confirm your specific policy is accepted before admission for a non-emergency. The direct billing relationship applies to the main hospital, but some outpatient departments or specific specialist consultations may require you to pay and reclaim. Keep all receipts.
For the Non-OA retirement visa mandatory insurance, note that the minimum OIA-compliant policy is very basic (฿40,000 OPD / ฿500,000 IPD). These policies often do not have direct billing with premium hospitals — they're designed for visa compliance only. If you want genuine healthcare coverage at Bangkok Hospital or PIH, you need a proper IPMI (International Private Medical Insurance) policy, which costs roughly ฿30,000–100,000 per year depending on age and coverage level.
