Choosing a school in Phuket is one of the biggest decisions expat families make — and the stakes feel higher here because you're doing it without the local network you'd have at home. PIA (Phuket International Academy) comes up consistently when families are comparing their options, especially those committed to the full IB continuum from early years through to university entry.
This review draws on conversations with current and former PIA families, information gathered during school visits, and seven years of tracking Phuket's international school landscape. I'll give you the honest version — the strengths, the things to think carefully about, and how PIA sits relative to Phuket's other main options.

PIA — Our Rating
Based on curriculum quality, value, community, facilities, and expat family feedback
Curriculum: The Full IB Pathway
PIA's biggest differentiator is the full IB continuum — a consistent educational philosophy from the moment a child enters Early Years all the way through to the IB Diploma at age 17–18. This matters more than it might sound. Schools that offer IB only at the Diploma level often struggle because students arrive at Grade 11 unfamiliar with IB's inquiry-based, concept-driven approach. PIA students arrive at the DP already fluent in how IB works.
IB Primary Years Programme (PYP) — Early Years to Grade 5
The PYP focuses on transdisciplinary learning — topics are explored across subjects rather than in isolation. It develops critical thinking, curiosity, and student agency from a young age. PIA's PYP feedback from parents is generally strong, particularly around the classroom culture and teacher quality at primary level.
IB Middle Years Programme (MYP) — Grades 6–10
The MYP is where some families find the IB approach more challenging to navigate — it's less standardised externally than IGCSE, and university admissions offices in some countries (particularly some Asian universities) are less familiar with MYP transcripts than IGCSE grades. If you're likely to move to a country where IGCSE is the norm before Grade 11, this is worth considering. For families staying through to IB Diploma, the MYP foundation is excellent.
IB Diploma Programme (DP) — Grades 11–12
PIA's IB Diploma results have been consistently solid. The DP is recognised for university entry globally — in the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Europe, and increasingly across Asia. The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) component, the Extended Essay, and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) requirements give IB graduates a distinct advantage in university applications that reward intellectual engagement beyond exam scores.
Fees and Costs
PIA sits in the mid-tier of Phuket's international school fee range — more affordable than UWC Thailand and broadly comparable to HeadStart International, but less expensive than BISP at most grade levels.
| Grade Level | Annual Tuition (THB) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Early Years (Pre-K/KG) | ฿230,000–฿260,000 | Half-day options may be available |
| Primary (Gr 1–5 / PYP) | ฿280,000–฿320,000 | Per academic year |

| High School (Gr 9–10 / MYP) | ฿360,000–฿400,000 | Per academic year |
| IB Diploma (Gr 11–12 / DP) | ฿420,000–฿490,000 | Includes IB exam fees |
| Registration Fee (one-time) | ฿15,000–฿25,000 | Non-refundable |
| Capital Levy / Deposit | ฿100,000–฿150,000 | Refundable on departure |
| School Bus (if used) | ฿35,000–฿60,000 | Per year; distance-dependent |
| Uniform / Books / Activities | ฿15,000–฿30,000 | Estimated annual additional cost |
International school fees in Phuket increase annually (typically 3–8% per year). The figures above are indicative for 2025–2026. Always request the current fee schedule directly from PIA's admissions office before making decisions.
Facilities and Campus
PIA's campus in the Thepkasattri area has the feel of a purpose-built international school — not a converted Thai school or hotel that became a school. The facilities are functional and well-maintained, though families arriving from very large international schools in Singapore or Hong Kong may notice the campus is more modest in scale.
Standout facilities include well-equipped science labs, a library with a genuine research focus, and good IT infrastructure. Sporting facilities are adequate — football pitch, basketball courts, and a swimming pool — though if sport is your child's primary passion, BISP's facilities are meaningfully superior. The arts spaces are solid, supporting PIA's strong IB creativity and arts program.
Location and Transport
PIA's Thepkasattri location makes it the natural choice for expat families in Bang Tao, Laguna, Surin, Cherng Talay, and Thalang. Journey times from these areas are typically 10–25 minutes. Families in Rawai, Kata/Karon, or Chalong are looking at 35–50 minutes each way — the school bus runs to these areas but it's a long commute for primary-age children.
Families in Kamala or Patong are roughly equidistant between PIA and BISP or HeadStart — worth factoring into your school choice if you live in those areas.
Community and Student Body
PIA's community is genuinely international — around 40 nationalities represented, with no single dominant nationality making up more than 20% of enrolment. This creates a more diverse social environment than some Phuket schools that skew heavily toward one expatriate community. Parent feedback consistently highlights the warm school community, approachable leadership, and strong pastoral care, particularly at primary level.
The school size (roughly 400–600 students) means your child won't get lost in a crowd, but is large enough to have a good range of friendship groups and activities. For socially reserved children, the community feel at PIA is often cited as a genuine strength.

Admissions Process
PIA's admissions process is thorough but not intimidating. Here's what to expect:
- Online application via the PIA website — basic family and student details
- Document submission — previous school reports (typically last 2 years), passport copies, vaccination records
- Student assessment — English and Maths at grade-appropriate level (don't over-coach for this — it's a placement tool, not a gatekeeping exam)
- Family/student interview — usually informal, especially for younger children; more structured for secondary applicants
- Offer and enrollment — subject to place availability in the relevant grade
The school recommends applying at least 3 months before the intended start date. For September intake, the process ideally starts by May–June. Mid-year intake is possible if places are available. Grade 11 (IB DP Year 1) is a common sticking point — if your child hasn't been in an IB program previously, PIA will assess carefully whether they're prepared for the DP's demands.
The IB Diploma is a two-year program and assumes familiarity with IB's approach to learning. If your child is coming from a GCSE/A-Level or non-IB school and wants to enter Grade 11 at PIA, discuss this openly with admissions. Many students successfully make this transition, but some additional preparation time helps.
Practical Notes for Expat Families
Language of Instruction
English throughout. Thai Language is included as a subject. Additional language support (EAL — English as an Additional Language) is available for students joining with limited English, though the depth of EAL support varies by grade level.
School Hours
Typically 8:00–15:30 for primary, 8:00–16:00 for secondary. After-school activities extend the day for many students. The school day timing aligns reasonably well with working expat parents' schedules.
School Calendar
PIA follows an August–June academic year (like most international schools in Phuket), rather than the Thai school year (May–March). This aligns well with Northern Hemisphere school systems and makes transitions easier for families arriving from or returning to the UK, Europe, Australia, or North America.
