One of the unexpected upsides of expat life in Phuket is how easily fitness becomes a part of your routine. The climate — yes, even the heat — forces you to train early. The community of fitness-focused expats is large and welcoming. The options range from ฿800/month local Thai gyms to world-class Olympic facilities. And Muay Thai, which you might have assumed was just a tourist activity, turns out to be one of the best full-body workouts you'll ever do.

After six years here, fitness is the area where Phuket has consistently exceeded expectations. This guide covers everything from budget gym memberships to specialist training camps.

Muay Thai Training Camps

Phuket is arguably the best place in the world to train Muay Thai outside of Bangkok. The island has dozens of camps ranging from tourist-friendly beginner sessions to serious professional training environments.

Muay Thai

Tiger Muay Thai

The most internationally known camp in Phuket, located on Soi Ta-iad in Chalong. Massive facility with multiple rings, daily group classes at all levels, strength & conditioning, and MMA. The expat community here is huge — hundreds of long-term residents train regularly. Two daily sessions: 7am and 4pm.

฿600/drop-in · ฿5,000–7,000/month · Soi Ta-iad, Chalong

Muay Thai

Rawai Muay Thai

More traditional, more Thai than Tiger. Located in Rawai — smaller, fewer foreigners, more serious Thai fighters training alongside you. This is where you go when you want to actually learn Thai boxing rather than just get fit. Trainers are mostly former professional fighters. Excellent for intermediate and advanced students.

฿500/drop-in · ฿4,000/month · Rawai

Muay Thai

Sinbi Muay Thai

Popular camp on the road between Rawai and Nai Harn. Good reputation for beginner-friendly instruction without the tourist-camp feel. Smaller class sizes than Tiger — you get more individual attention from trainers. Strong community of long-term resident students. Afternoon sessions popular with the south-of-island expat crowd.

฿450/drop-in · ฿3,800/month · Rawai/Nai Harn

Muay Thai

Phuket Top Team (MMA & BJJ)

If you want mixed martial arts rather than strictly Muay Thai, Phuket Top Team on Chao Fa West Road is the most respected MMA gym on the island. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes are particularly strong here, with regular visiting black belts. Well-equipped, professional atmosphere, international student body.

Swimming in Phuket

Phuket's ocean conditions vary dramatically by season. During the dry season (November–April), most west coast beaches including Bang Tao, Surin, Kata and Karon are safe for swimming. The east coast (Rawai, Chalong Bay) has calmer conditions year-round but less clear water.

During wet season (May–October), red flags on west coast beaches mean dangerous riptides — swim in pools instead. The Thanyapura 50m pool in Thalang is the gold standard; most major hotels in Laguna also allow non-guests to use pools for a day fee of ฿400–800.

🏊 Pool Membership Options in Phuket

  • Thanyapura (50m Olympic pool) — ฿5,500–7,000/month full membership, ฿800 day pass
  • Boat Lagoon Marina — ฿2,500/month pool access for non-residents
  • Rawai Muay Thai gym pool — included with training membership
  • Condo complexes — if you rent in Laguna or Bang Tao, most have excellent pools included

Outdoor Fitness: Running, Cycling & More

🏃 Best Outdoor Running Spots in Phuket

Nai Harn Lake — the most popular expat running spot. 3.5km paved path around a beautiful lake, relatively flat, usually busy 5:30–8am. The Nai Harn Run Club meets here Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Parkrun Phuket operates here on Saturday mornings at 7am.

Rawai Seafront Promenade — 2km+ paved waterfront with sea views. Flat, scenic, best at dawn before it gets busy.

Khao Rang Hill, Phuket Town — 3km road climb through forest with panoramic views. Popular with serious runners and trail enthusiasts.

Laguna Canal Path, Bang Tao — flat path through the resort complex. Safe, shaded in places, around 4km.

For cycling, Phuket's roads are challenging (hilly, busy traffic) but the scenery on the Chalong–Cape Panwa route and the Nai Harn–Rawai–Ao Sane circuit is exceptional. The Phuket Road Runners and the Phuket Cycling Club both have active Facebook groups worth joining.

Fitness & Health Insurance in Phuket

One consideration that's easy to overlook: sports injuries are common in Phuket, especially among Muay Thai and CrossFit practitioners. Bangkok Hospital Phuket (076-254425) has an excellent sports medicine and orthopaedic department. Siriroj Hospital (076-209300) is more affordable for minor injuries.

If you're training seriously, make sure your health insurance covers sports-related injuries — some policies exclude them. Our recommended health insurance partners cover full sports injury treatment. A solid expat health policy typically costs ฿35,000–80,000/year depending on your age and coverage level.
