Garden & Landscaping Services in Phuket: Hiring, Costs & Tropical Plants

Phuket gardens grow fast and wild — in wet season a fortnight's neglect is enough to lose the plot entirely. Here's how to find good garden help and keep your tropical outdoor space looking great.

I didn't fully appreciate what "tropical growth rate" meant until my first wet season in Phuket. I left for three weeks. When I came back, grass was knee-high, a frangipani had dropped about 400 flowers onto the pool deck, and something that I'm certain was a small vine when I left had engulfed an entire wall section. Phuket plants grow with a kind of cheerful aggression that's genuinely impressive once you've accepted it.

The answer — as with so many things here — is to get good help and get it reliably. Garden maintenance is affordable in Phuket, the range of expertise is excellent (Thai gardeners have an intuitive grasp of tropical horticulture that no imported consultant can match), and with the right team in place, a Phuket garden can be absolutely spectacular.

Types of Garden Service Available in Phuket

Regular Maintenance Gardener

The most common arrangement for Phuket villa owners is a regular maintenance gardener who comes weekly or twice-monthly. They'll mow grass, prune shrubs, clear fallen leaves and flowers, maintain planting borders, and manage weed growth. For most standard villa gardens (200–600 sqm of planted area), one person spending 2–4 hours covers the essentials.

Many are freelancers working several properties in the same area — they know the local plants, the local soil, and often the specific quirks of your plot from previous visits. Rates: 300–600 THB per session for a half-day visit, or 1,500–4,000 THB per month on a regular contract.

Landscaping and Garden Design

If you want to redesign or improve a garden — new planting, a lawn area, feature trees, a sala garden structure, or pathway improvements — you need a landscaping company rather than a maintenance gardener. Several professional landscaping businesses operate on the island, with project management, design services, and installation teams.

Landscaping projects in Phuket vary enormously in scope and cost. A simple garden refresh (new planting, mulching, feature plants) for a medium-sized villa might run 15,000–50,000 THB. A full garden design with hardscaping (paths, raised beds, water features) on a large plot can easily reach 200,000–500,000 THB or more.

Lawn and Grass Management

Phuket's most common lawn grass is Bermuda (common across estates in Bang Tao and Laguna) and various local bahia/carpet grass types. Both grow fast in wet season and require mowing every 1–2 weeks. A standalone lawn mowing service for a standard villa plot costs 300–700 THB per session. Many gardeners bring their own equipment; if not, a petrol lawn mower costs 4,000–8,000 THB at HomePro in Chalong or on Route 402.

Tree Trimming and Palm Care

Coconut palms are ubiquitous on Phuket villa plots and require regular trimming (frond removal and nut harvest) for safety — a falling coconut is not a joke. Specialist tree and palm trimming teams operate across the island, typically charging 300–800 THB per palm depending on height. Larger trees require specialist equipment and can cost significantly more.

Wet season note: In May–October, expect to pay for more frequent visits. A garden that needed fortnightly maintenance in dry season will need weekly in wet season. Budget accordingly — or accept a wilder look between visits, which honestly has a certain charm too.

Best Plants for a Phuket Garden

Forget the European gardening instinct — most temperate plants struggle or fail in Phuket's heat, UV, and humidity. The plants that thrive here are spectacular when you lean into the tropical aesthetic.

Plumeria (Frangipani)

The quintessential Phuket villa tree — fragrant white, pink, or yellow flowers year-round. Low maintenance, fast-growing, looks beautiful everywhere.

Heliconia

Dramatic tropical flowers in red, orange, and yellow. Thrives in Phuket's humidity and partial shade. Great for borders and as a background planting.

Bougainvillea

Prolific flowering in dry season when it gets a bit of drought stress. Available in white, pink, purple, and orange. Excellent for walls, trellises, and colour.

Traveller's Palm

The iconic fan-shaped palm found throughout Phuket villas. Dramatic, structural, fast-growing. Provides excellent screening and a resort aesthetic.

Monstera Deliciosa

Thrives in partial shade under larger trees. Dramatic split leaves look great around pool areas. Very low maintenance once established.

Ixora

Low shrub with clusters of tiny red, orange, or yellow flowers. Used as hedging and border planting throughout Phuket estates. Hardy and colourful.

Plants to Avoid

Lavender, roses, and most European perennials struggle badly in Phuket's heat and humidity — they'll limp along before giving up. Cypress and conifers are similarly unhappy. Apple, pear, and most stone fruit trees won't fruit without the cold winters they need for dormancy. Stick to tropical species and you'll be rewarded with spectacular, fast, enthusiastic growth.

Vegetables and Herbs

Thai basil, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, galangal, chilli, and morning glory (pak bung) are all easy to grow in Phuket's conditions. Cherry tomatoes, beans, and aubergine also do reasonably well in raised beds. For most leafy greens (lettuce, spinach, rocket), you'll need a shaded area or shade cloth to prevent bolting in the heat — but it can be done with the right setup.

How to Find a Reliable Gardener in Phuket

Estate Management and Neighbours

In managed villa estates in Bang Tao, Laguna, Rawai, and Cherng Talay, your estate management team is the first port of call. Many offer garden maintenance packages or have approved gardener referrals. Neighbours in your moo baan are also invaluable — if someone's garden looks good, ask who they use.

Facebook Groups

The same Phuket expat Facebook groups that help with cleaners and pool services are useful for garden staff — "Phuket Expats", "Bang Tao & Laguna Expats", "Rawai Expat Community". Post your area, approximate garden size, and desired frequency and you'll get referrals quickly. Be specific about what you want: "looking for a maintenance gardener for a 400 sqm plot in Nai Harn, twice-monthly visits, budget 1,500 THB/month" gets better responses than "need a gardener".

Pool Service Bundles

Many pool service companies in Phuket offer combined pool and garden maintenance packages. If you're already happy with a pool team, ask if they have a garden maintenance service. The convenience of one company handling both is real — and they'll often give a small discount for the combined contract. See our Phuket pool service guide for how these arrangements typically work.

Landscaping Companies for Larger Projects

For significant landscaping work, search for "landscaping Phuket" or "garden design Phuket" to find established companies with portfolios. Look for those who have worked on similar-sized projects in your area, and ask for references from previous clients. The Laguna and Bang Tao villa corridor has particularly well-developed landscaping services given the volume of high-value properties. Our Phuket housing guide has more on villa environments in each area.

Garden & Landscaping in Phuket — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does a gardener cost in Phuket?
A regular maintenance gardener charges 300–600 THB per session for a standard villa garden. Monthly retainer contracts run 1,500–4,000 THB/month. Larger plots with complex planting or more frequent visits can reach 4,000–8,000 THB/month.
How often does a Phuket garden need maintenance?
In wet season (May–October) weekly maintenance is often needed as grass and tropical plants grow extremely fast. In dry season, twice-monthly is sufficient for most villa gardens. Neglect a Phuket garden in wet season for a month and you'll come back to a jungle.
What plants are good for a Phuket garden?
Great choices include Plumeria (frangipani), Heliconia, Bird of Paradise, Bougainvillea, Traveller's Palm, Monstera, and Ixora. All handle Phuket's heat, humidity, and seasonal rainfall well. Avoid European plants — they don't cope with the tropical climate.
How do I find a reliable gardener in Phuket?
Ask your estate management office, neighbouring villa owners, or in Phuket expat Facebook groups. Many pool service companies also offer combined garden maintenance packages. Real referrals from people with similar garden types in the same area are most reliable.
Can I have a vegetable garden in Phuket?
Yes, but it requires some effort — raised beds with quality soil, shade cloth for sun management, and pest management. Easier-growing options include Thai basil, lemongrass, kaffir lime, galangal, chilli, and morning glory (pak bung). Cherry tomatoes, beans, and aubergines also do well.
