Phuket's Fitness Scene: Better Than You Think
One of the things that surprised me when I moved to Rawai in 2018 was the quality of Phuket's fitness scene. I expected beach bars and pool floats. What I found was world-class Muay Thai training, an Olympic-grade sports performance centre, serious triathlon infrastructure, and one of the most active expat running communities in Southeast Asia.
The heat is the main factor. Most serious training happens before 9am or after 5pm. Once you adjust, the year-round warmth becomes an advantage — no winter, no gym-only months, outdoor training year-round.
Muay Thai Training in Phuket
Phuket is one of the best places in the world to train Muay Thai. The island has dozens of camps ranging from international mega-gyms to small local camps where you train alongside professional Thai fighters. Here's an honest assessment:
Tiger Muay Thai
The largest Muay Thai camp in the world. Excellent facilities, international coaching, Muay Thai + MMA + BJJ + fitness all under one roof. Can feel factory-like in peak season but the training quality is genuinely high. Best for all levels.
Sinbi Muay Thai
More serious atmosphere than Tiger MT. Smaller, better fighter-to-trainer ratio. Preferred by expats who want to fight rather than just train. Rawai location means shorter commute from Rawai/Nai Harn.
AKA Thailand
American Kickboxing Academy's Thailand base. World-class MMA, wrestling, BJJ and boxing. Many UFC-level fighters have trained here. Excellent for serious practitioners. Less beginner-friendly than Tiger.
Phuket Top Team
Strong MMA and Muay Thai program. Good fighter development. Less commercialised than Tiger. Serious training environment with some excellent Thai trainers who speak good English.
