There's a version of Phuket beach club culture that exists in Instagram stories – bottle service, EDM, staff in matching uniforms. And then there's the version I actually visit on weekends – a sunbed, a cold Singha, and a long stretch of sand with friends. Both exist here, and knowing which is which saves you from a ฿6,000 disappointment.
After six years on the island, I've worked out which beach clubs are genuinely worth the money for expats living here – not just for the annual tourist splurge, but for a spontaneous Sunday afternoon. Here's the honest breakdown.

Thailand doesn't have reciprocal healthcare agreements. Expats need private cover before they arrive. We compare the best plans for Phuket residents.

Catch Beach Club
The gold standard. Excellent food, a serious wine list, and one of Phuket's most beautiful stretches of sand. Sophisticated without being stuffy – Sunday lunches here are a fixture for the Bang Tao expat crowd. Book ahead for high season.
Sunbed: ฿500–800 min spend | Mains: ฿400–900HQ Beach Lounge
Best value beach club on the island, full stop. ฿300 for a sunbed with ฿300 drink credit, on arguably Phuket's prettiest bay. Very popular with the Rawai expat community – you'll see regulars here every Sunday. No pretension, great sunset views.
Sunbed: ฿300 (฿300 F&B credit) | Drinks: ฿120–200Xana Beach Club
Tucked inside the Laguna complex, Xana has a beautiful pool, calm shallow water perfect for children, and a relaxed vibe that works well for families. Less party-focused than competitors – more day-at-the-resort feel. Great for Bang Tao expat families on a budget.
Sunbed: ฿400–500 min spend | Pool access: free with reservationCafé del Mar
The global brand brought its Ibiza concept to Phuket in 2019 and it works well. Better for afternoon sessions than all-day lounging – the DJ sets from 4pm are genuinely good. Pricey but slick. Kamala location means calmer seas than Patong, which is right around the corner.
Sunbed: ฿600–1,000 min spend | Cocktails: ฿350–500Baba Beach Club
Technically just north of Phuket in Phang Nga province, but worth the 40-minute drive. The Sri Panwa sister property has an 8km near-empty beach – a world apart from Surin on a peak-season Sunday. The vibe is boutique-luxe without the crowds. Great option when Phuket's west coast feels overrun.
Sunbed: ฿500–700 min spend | Day pass: ฿1,200 incl. creditDream Beach Club / Illuzion
Patong's beach club scene caters to short-stay tourists and is largely the domain of bottle service packages and DJs. Dream Beach Club on Patong is the most established. Most Phuket-based expats avoid the Patong strip, but if you're hosting visitors who want that full-on scene, this delivers.

Beach Club Areas: Which Suits You?
Surin & Kamala – Upscale West Coast
The premium strip for beach club culture in Phuket. Surin has the most sophisticated crowd on the island – lots of long-term expats, successful freelancers, and a sprinkling of boutique hotel guests. The beach itself is stunning and less crowded than Bang Tao. Kamala is quieter still, with Café del Mar the standout venue. Both coasts get rough waves May–October.
Bang Tao & Laguna – Family-Friendly North
Bang Tao is Phuket's longest beach (8km) and home to the sprawling Laguna resort complex. The beach club scene here is more family-oriented and slightly more affordable than Surin. Xana inside Angsana Laguna is the main draw. The Bang Tao expat community is large – many families live year-round in the Laguna Estate area – and beach clubs here tend to have a regular local clientele rather than pure tourist trade.
Nai Harn & Rawai – South Coast Value
The south of Phuket has a totally different expat personality – more retired Europeans, dive instructors, budget-conscious creatives. HQ Beach Lounge at Nai Harn is the undisputed local favourite: genuinely affordable, beautiful bay setting, reliably breezy even in peak heat, and a crowd that's more interested in a good book than bottle service. Rawai doesn't have a formal beach club but has dozens of seafront restaurants with sunbed setups.
Phuket Town – No Beach Clubs
If you live in Phuket Town, you're a 20–35 minute drive from any beach club. The Old Town has great café and bar culture (Bookhemian, Dibuk bar scene) but no beach. Phuket Town residents typically adopt Bang Tao or Nai Harn as their beach club base depending on which direction they drive.
💡 Insider Tips for Beach Club Days
- Book sunbeds in advance – Catch Beach Club gets fully reserved by Thursday for peak season weekends. Call or WhatsApp ahead.
- Minimum spends are real – The ฿500 sunbed "hire" is usually a minimum F&B spend. Easy to hit with 2 drinks and a shared dish.
- West coast waves May–Oct – Red flags mean no swimming. The pools stay open. HQ Nai Harn is the most reliable year-round beach swim.
- Happy hours are gold – Many clubs (including Catch and Café del Mar) run 3–5pm happy hours with 50% off cocktails. Arrive then, not at 1pm.
- Parking is free – Unlike Patong, all the above clubs have free parking. Motorbike parking is easier; bring a lock.
What a Beach Club Day Really Costs in Phuket
| Item | Budget (HQ Nai Harn) | Mid-range (Xana / Café del Mar) | Premium (Catch / Baba) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunbed / entry | ฿300 (incl. drink credit) | ฿400–600 min spend | ฿600–1,000 min spend |
| Cocktails (2x) | ฿240–400 | ฿600–800 | ฿700–1,000 |
| Shared starter | ฿200–350 | ฿300–500 | ฿400–700 |
| Main course | ฿250–400 | ฿350–600 | ฿500–900 |
| Total per person | ฿600–900 | ฿1,200–2,000 | ฿2,000–4,000+ |
The minimum spend model means you're not really paying a hire fee – you're committing to that value in food and drink. At Catch, ฿800 minimum per sunbed per person sounds steep until you realise a cocktail is ฿350 and a shared carpaccio is ฿390. It goes fast.
When to Visit Beach Clubs in Phuket
| Month | West Coast (Surin, Kamala, Bang Tao) | South Coast (Nai Harn) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nov–Apr | ✅ Best season – calm sea, sunny | ✅ Excellent | Peak season – book sunbeds ahead |
| May–Jun | ⚠️ Waves building, swimming risky | ✅ Still good | Fewer tourists, better prices |
| Jul–Aug | 🌊 Rough – pool areas only | ⚠️ Can be rough | Some expats love the empty beaches |
| Sep–Oct | 🌊 Wettest months – reduced hours | ⚠️ Variable | Check club social media before going |
The rainy season doesn't mean all-day downpours – it means more frequent heavy showers with sunshine in between. Beach clubs stay open year-round; just check conditions before a 30-minute drive. For more detail on navigating Phuket's seasons, see our rainy season expat guide.

Browse All Phuket Guides →Beach Club Dress Code & Etiquette
Phuket beach clubs are casual by global standards. At the beach area, a swimsuit and sarong is fine. For restaurant seating, most venues expect you to have a cover-up – a light shirt or dress, not boardshorts and a bare chest. Flip-flops are generally accepted but some upscale venues (Catch's dinner service) prefer shoes at the table.
Tipping is not mandatory but appreciated – ฿50–100 per round of drinks is common. Service charges (10%) are usually added to the bill already.
🗓 Beach Club Events Worth Knowing
- Catch Beach Club Sunday Brunch – ฿1,800–2,200 per person, free-flow option. Fills up weeks in advance December–March.
- Café del Mar Full Moon Events – Monthly DJ events coinciding with the full moon. ฿500–800 entry, popular with mixed expat/tourist crowd.
- HQ Sunday Sessions – Informal, no booking needed, starts filling from 11am. Best value in Phuket.
- Xana New Year's Eve – The Laguna complex hosts a big NYE event. Tickets ฿2,500–5,000 depending on package.
Beach clubs near Bang Tao, Rawai and Nai Harn, and Kamala each have distinct expat communities. If you're still figuring out which area of Phuket to base yourself, our area comparison guide lays out the tradeoffs clearly.
