One of the unexpected bonuses of living in Phuket is that you'll almost certainly be in better shape than at home. The combination of outdoor activities year-round, excellent Muay Thai gyms, affordable fitness memberships, and a culture of morning exercise means the island naturally pushes you toward an active lifestyle. Here's what's available, what it costs, and what the expat community actually uses.
Gyms & Fitness Centres by Area
Fitness First (Boat Lagoon)
International chain with solid equipment, classes, and pool access. Most consistent across-the-board option for expats who want familiar gym infrastructure. Multiple class types including yoga, spinning, and HIIT.
Laguna Sports Club
Resort-quality facilities: gym, 50m pool, tennis courts, group classes. Popular with Laguna residents and villa owners. Day passes available. Best facilities on the island — prices reflect it.
Fitness Time / Local Thai Gyms
Thai-owned gyms throughout the island with adequate equipment. Rawai, Chalong, and Phuket Town all have local gyms charging local prices. Equipment is functional rather than premium.
CrossFit Phuket & Functional Fitness
The main CrossFit affiliate. Well-equipped, experienced coaches from international backgrounds, strong community. Also multiple functional fitness gyms with CrossFit-style WODs at lower prices throughout Chalong and Rawai.
Muay Thai: World-Class Training on Your Doorstep
Phuket is genuinely one of the best places in the world to train Muay Thai. The gyms here have produced world champions, and the standard of coaching — even for recreational trainees — is exceptional. Whether you want to train seriously, get fit, or just try it once, Phuket has the full spectrum.
Tiger Muay Thai
Phuket's most famous gym. International trainers, multiple rings, MMA and BJJ also available. Can feel busy and commercial, but the quality of instruction is genuine. Accommodation on-site. Good for serious trainees.
Rawai Muay Thai
More traditional Thai gym feel than Tiger. Less tourist-facing, more serious training atmosphere. Strong pad-work sessions with experienced Thai trainers. Popular with long-term expat fighters.
Sitmonchai Gym
Located near Bang Tao, attracts the professional and semi-professional crowd from the north of the island. Smaller, more personal, with quality Thai trainers. Good balance of serious and recreational trainees.
Suwit Muay Thai
One of the more welcoming gyms for beginners and female trainees. Good atmosphere, professional trainers, and regular shows where trainees can watch (or fight) authentic Muay Thai bouts.
Most gyms offer 2 sessions per day (morning ~8am, afternoon ~4pm). You don't need to train twice daily — most expat fitness trainees go once. The first session is the hardest; after 2 weeks your body adapts to the climate and the intensity. Expect to lose weight fast and sleep extremely well. Bring your own hand wraps (฿150–200 at any sporting goods store) — shared wraps at gyms are genuinely unpleasant.
Yoga & Wellness Studios
Phuket has an excellent yoga scene, especially at the boutique and retreat end. Options range from budget community classes to premium resort experiences.
The Yoga Retreat Phuket
One of the most highly regarded yoga studios in Thailand. Beautiful space, experienced teachers, variety of styles. Popular with both long-term expats and visiting practitioners. Drop-in and monthly membership options.
Bodhi Surf & Yoga
Yoga studio attached to a surf school in Kamala. Excellent instruction, relaxed vibe, good for those who want yoga plus outdoor activity. Retreats available. Drop-in friendly.
Studio Yoga Phuket & Local Studios
Multiple independent studios around Boat Avenue and Cherng Talay. Quality varies; ask for recommendations from the expat community. Prices tend to be more accessible than resort studios.
Running in Phuket
Running in Phuket requires strategy: the heat (and humidity) from March to May can be genuinely dangerous for outdoor running between 8am and 6pm. Most serious runners go out before 6:30am or after 6:30pm.
Best running routes by area: Nai Harn Lake loop (Rawai — flat, shaded, 1.6km loop, popular with expats), Promthep Cape road (Rawai — hilly, views, best early morning), Laguna path (Bang Tao — resort complex paths, reasonably flat), Phuket Town old city (flat, interesting streets, go early), Bang Tao beach (flat, 8km return, hard sand at low tide).
The Phuket Hash House Harriers run every Saturday at 4pm, at rotating locations throughout the island. The Laguna Phuket Triathlon in November is the year's biggest running event — a genuine landmark race with 10,000+ participants including international athletes.
Cycling
Cycling infrastructure is improving but still requires care. The west coast cycling lanes (Bang Tao to Surin) are the most developed on the island. Interior roads around Thalang and Kathu have low traffic during early mornings. The main highway (Route 402) is not suitable for cycling under any circumstances.
Most serious cyclists go out at 5:30–6:30am. The Phuket Cycling Club coordinates group rides on Facebook — routes are shared the evening before, typically 30–60km loops. Road bikes and serious mountain bikes are available to buy at specialist shops in Phuket Town and Bang Tao (฿15,000–80,000 for a decent road bike).
Water Sports & Outdoor Activities
Phuket's natural environment makes it one of the world's best places for water sports. Surfing is best at Kata Beach and Kalim (north Patong) from June to September — this is low season for tourists but high season for surf. Board rentals available at both beaches. Kitesurfing concentrates at Nai Yang (north Phuket) where the wind is most consistent. Scuba diving is best March to May (Andaman sea calm, visibility exceptional) — the Similans and Richelieu Rock are world-class dive sites accessible from Phuket.

Good health insurance matters even when you're fit.
Sport injuries are common in Phuket. Bangkok Hospital Phuket charges ฿3,000–15,000 for sports injury consultations. Good coverage is essential.
