Phuket Expat Meetups & Events 2026

The number one question I get from people who've just moved to Phuket isn't about visas or bank accounts. It's "how do I actually meet people here?" I've been living in Rawai since 2018, and I'll be honest — in my first six months I felt more isolated than I expected. The island looks social on Instagram, but showing up at a beach bar alone doesn't exactly lead to lasting friendships.

The secret is recurring events. Not one-off parties, but the weekly and monthly gatherings where the same faces show up again and again. That's where Phuket's real expat community lives. This guide covers every regular meetup, event series and social club I know of — from the Hash House Harriers (which helped me meet my closest friends here) to the more formal BNI business network.

Quick Tip: The Fastest Way to Meet People

Join Hash House Harriers Phuket. They run every Saturday morning from Chalong — a non-competitive social run followed by beer and singing. Cost: ฿200. People: 30–80 regulars from across the expat community. WhatsApp group is massive and active. It genuinely changed my social life here.

Weekly Recurring Events — The Calendar You Need

These are the events that happen every single week, rain or shine. Commit to one or two of these and you'll have a social network within three months.

Every Saturday

Hash House Harriers Phuket (H3)

Run/Walk · Social · All Welcome

Non-competitive run through Phuket's trails and neighbourhoods. Runs from different locations each week (usually Chalong area). Cost ฿200. Followed by circle singing, beer and socialising. WhatsApp group: search "Phuket H3 Harriers".

Every Saturday · 6am

Phuket Road Runners

Running · Nai Harn Lake

Morning run at Nai Harn Lake (3.8km loop). Very friendly, mixed abilities. Usually 20–50 runners. Free to join. Facebook group: "Phuket Road Runners". Best for those living in the south of the island.

Mon–Fri · 5:30–7:30am

Nai Harn Lake Morning Runners

Informal · Daily · Free

Not an organised group per se, but the Nai Harn Lake morning crowd is a genuine community. Show up before 6am and you'll see the same 50+ faces every day. One of the best ways to meet retired and WFH expats in the south.

Every Monday Eve

Phuket H3 Monday City Hash

Urban Hash · Phuket Town

More urban version of the Saturday H3 — runs through Phuket Town streets and neighbourhoods. Smaller and more international crowd. Good if you're based in Phuket Town or want to explore the city on foot.

Various Days

Padel Phuket Groups

Sport · Bang Tao + Thanyapura

The padel scene has exploded. Facebook group "Padel Phuket" organises matchmaking and pick-up games at Thanyapura (Thalang), Bang Tao courts and Rawai. If you have any tennis/racket background, this is your fastest entry into Phuket social life.

Weekly Timetable

Tiger Muay Thai Community

Fitness · Soi Ta-iad Chalong

The gym community at Tiger Muay Thai (Soi Ta-iad, Chalong) is a self-contained social world. Regular students become a tight community, especially the long-stay expats. Daily classes, social runs and informal gatherings after training.

Area-by-Area Social Scene

Rawai & Nai Harn — Best Social Scene for Long-Stay Expats

The south is where the community is densest. Nai Harn Lake morning runs, the weekly H3 Hash, and a cluster of expat-friendly bars (HQ Beach Lounge, Nikita's on the beach) make this the most naturally social area. If you're working from home and want easy access to the expat community, Rawai is your best bet.

Bang Tao & Laguna — More International, More Organised

The Bang Tao/Laguna community skews towards families and higher-income expats. The Laguna triathlon training group, BISP parent network and Boat Avenue Friday markets create natural meeting points. The padel courts here have genuinely become a social hub over the past two years. Less spontaneous than Rawai, but very organised.

Phuket Town — For Those Who Want Thai Integration

The Town's expat scene is smaller but more mixed with Thai residents. The Sunday Walking Street (Lard Yai Market, Thalang Road) is a genuine community gathering point. The Monday H3 City Hash runs here. Café culture is strong — Bookhemian and Kopitiam regulars overlap significantly with the expat community.

Chalong — Fitness-Focused Community

Chalong is defined by Tiger Muay Thai (Soi Ta-iad) and the cluster of fitness businesses around it. If your social identity is fitness-first, Chalong's community is extremely tight. AKA Thailand in Rawai (10 minutes from Chalong) overlaps with this crowd.

Kata / Karon — Younger, More Transient

This area has more transient expats and less of the "long-stay" feel of Rawai or Bang Tao. Good for younger expats and digital nomads passing through. The surf community at Kata beach (Oct–Apr) creates a seasonal social scene around Saltwater Dreaming and Surf House.

Online Communities That Host Real Events

Several online groups regularly organise face-to-face events worth knowing about.

  • Phuket Expats (Facebook) — 80,000+ members. Regular "meetup" posts, especially for newcomers wanting to meet people. Check the group's "Events" tab.
  • Rawai Expats (Facebook) — Smaller, more focused. Weekly market days and pub quiz announcements.
  • Bangtao & Laguna Residents (Facebook) — Family-oriented. School event announcements, property news and local meetups.
  • Phuket International Women's Club (PIWC) — Organises monthly lunches, charity events and social activities. Facebook search "PIWC Phuket".
  • InterNations Phuket — internations.org. Monthly official meetups at venues in Patong and Phuket Town. More formal networking style.
  • Meetup.com — Search "Phuket Expats" and "Phuket International" for scheduled events. Less active than Facebook groups but useful for finding niche groups (photography, language exchange, etc.).

Annual Festivals & Events That Bring the Community Together

Several annual events act as natural community gatherings for the long-stay expat population.

Phuket Marathon (June)

Runs from Sarasin Bridge through Phuket Town. The expat running community trains together for this and it's a major social event. Training groups form from January onwards. Check Phuket Road Runners Facebook for training schedules.

Laguna Phuket Triathlon (November)

The big one for the Bang Tao/Laguna sports community. Three months of joint training sessions build friendships quickly. The event itself is followed by a major after-party at Laguna resort. Even if you don't race, the training community is very welcoming.

King's Cup Regatta (December)

One of Asia's biggest sailing regattas, based at Kata. The sailing and boating community swells during race week and the associated social events at Kata Rocks and Phuket Yacht Club are major networking occasions.

Vegetarian Festival (October, Phuket Town)

Not explicitly an expat event, but the entire Phuket community comes together around the Vegetarian Festival. Expats who've lived here for any length of time attend the street processions at Jui Tui Shrine (Ranong Road) and Bang Neow Shrine (Phang Nga Road). It's one of those events that makes you feel genuinely part of the island.

Professional & Business Networking

BNI Phuket

Business Networking International has at least two active Phuket chapters. Weekly breakfast meetings (typically 7am) at various hotel venues. Each chapter has one member per profession. Application required. Strong for anyone running a local business.

Rotary Club of Phuket

Meets Wednesday evenings at Phuket Town restaurants. Mix of expats and successful Thai business community. Service projects, fundraising and social dinners. Good if you want to integrate with the Thai business community rather than just the expat bubble.

Phuket Chamber of Commerce

Regular events for businesses operating in Phuket. Annual gala dinner is a major networking occasion. Useful for those running legitimate Thai companies or BOI-registered businesses.

Tips for Actually Meeting People (Not Just Attending Events)

Six years in, here's what I've learned about building genuine friendships in Phuket rather than just collecting "event acquaintances":

  • Show up consistently — One Hash run won't change your life. Showing up for three months will. Recurring events beat one-off parties every time.
  • Live in the right area first — If you want community, live in Rawai, Bang Tao or Phuket Town. Kata and Patong are more transient and harder to build lasting connections.
  • Don't just stay in expat circles — Learning basic Thai and joining one Thai-dominated activity (market cooking class, Muay Thai, morning market) exponentially expands your social world and makes the island feel more like home.
  • Accept the high turnover — Phuket has high expat churn. Some people you meet will leave after six months. Don't let this stop you from investing in friendships. The people who stay long-term find their people eventually.
  • Use WhatsApp, not Facebook events — The real planning happens in WhatsApp groups. Ask to be added to the H3 group, the running group, the padel group. Facebook events are often outdated or vague.
