One of the questions I get most from families considering the move is whether Phuket is actually good for children. The short answer: it's genuinely one of the best places in the world to raise kids, if you approach it with the right expectations. The island has excellent international schools, a strong expat family community, year-round outdoor activities, and enough variety to keep children of all ages engaged. The key is knowing what's actually worth doing — not the tourist traps, but the things families who live here actually do every weekend.

Rainy Season: What to Do When It's Wet
The wet season (May–October) doesn't mean constant rain — typical Phuket rainy season means sun until early afternoon, then a heavy shower for an hour or two, then sun again. But it's useful to have a list of genuinely good indoor options:
Phuket Aquarium (Cape Panwa) — always a good option
Central Festival's indoor play area (Kids Club) — soft play and structured activities for younger children
SF Cinema at Central Festival — English-language films regularly screened
Bowling at Phuket Town — several bowling venues in the Phuket Town/Rassada area
Pottery or art workshops — Phuket Town studios, especially on Thalang Road area
Phang Nga Bay day trip — the east coast (Phang Nga, Ao Po, Bang Rong Pier) is sheltered from the southwest monsoon and generally calm even in wet season
🌴 Phang Nga Bay in Wet Season
When Phuket's west coast beaches are closed due to red flags (May–October), the Phang Nga Bay area on the east side is sheltered and often calm. Sea kayaking through the limestone karsts is one of the most spectacular family activities near Phuket — and it's genuinely good in the rainy season. Book through a reputable operator from Ao Po or Bang Rong Pier.

Family-Friendly Areas to Live
Where you live in Phuket significantly affects which activities are accessible. For families with school-age children, Bang Tao / Laguna is the most popular area — close to BISP and UWC schools, good family facilities, Laguna Beach, and a strong expat family community. Rawai / Nai Harn is loved by families wanting a quieter lifestyle with a great beach nearby. Chalong is centrally positioned and popular for its easy access across the island.
From international schools to healthcare and visas, our guides have covered every part of family life in Phuket. Subscribe to get our family relocation guide free.
Splash Jungle Waterpark (Mai Khao) is the most established with a wave pool, slides for all ages, and a toddler area. Andamanda Phuket (Kathu), opened 2022, is newer and larger with more variety. Both are excellent family days out.
Kamala Beach is the most family-friendly — very shallow, calm water most of the year, relaxed atmosphere. Nai Harn Bay is excellent for its protected natural setting. Bang Tao's southern end has very calm, shallow water. Avoid Patong with young children.
Elephant Jungle Sanctuary (Kamala) and Green Elephant Sanctuary Park (Thalang) are the most commonly recommended ethical options — feeding, bathing, and observing only, no riding. Always avoid any operation offering elephant trekking or circus-style shows.
The rainy season typically brings afternoon showers, not all-day rain. Excellent options: Phuket Aquarium (Cape Panwa), Central Festival indoor play areas, Basecamp rock climbing gym, SF Cinema, bowling, cooking classes, and Phang Nga Bay sea kayaking on the sheltered east coast.
Phuket has football leagues, swimming clubs, Muay Thai for kids, tennis, golf, sailing, gymnastics, surfing (seasonal), and rock climbing. Thanyapura Sports Resort is the hub for many youth sport programmes. BISP and UWC schools also have extensive extracurricular sports.
Bang Tao / Laguna is most popular for expat families — close to BISP and UWC schools, Laguna Beach, strong expat community. Rawai / Nai Harn offers quieter family life near a great beach. See our area guides for full comparisons.
