The Honest Assessment
Family Life in Phuket: The Real Picture
Phuket is genuinely good for young children. The combination of outdoor lifestyle, multi-cultural environment, good international schools, and a strong expat family community creates something that's hard to replicate in most cities. If you ask expat parents who've been here a few years, most will tell you their children are thriving in ways that surprise them.
The honest challenges: international school fees are substantial and front-loaded with enrollment costs. Road safety is a genuine concern — the accident statistics are real and children need to understand them early. Teenage social life is more limited than in major cities, which becomes more relevant as children hit their mid-teens. And the heat and sun require active management, particularly for younger children and fair-skinned kids.
On balance, most expat families who come to Phuket for 2+ years end up extending their stay significantly. The lifestyle quality for children — particularly those under 14 — is very high.

Healthcare for Kids
Children's Healthcare in Phuket
For routine paediatric care, Phuket is well-equipped. Bangkok Hospital Phuket has a dedicated paediatric department with experienced staff — many trained abroad — and international-standard facilities including a NICU. Siriroj Hospital is the public hospital with a strong paediatrics unit and much lower costs. Vachira Phuket Hospital, the large government hospital, handles volume paediatric care at Thai national prices.
For routine vaccinations, the Thai immunisation schedule covers the basics. Some expat families supplement with vaccines available privately at Bangkok Hospital or at travel clinics — particularly if children will be travelling internationally. The HPV vaccine, meningitis vaccines, and chickenpox boosters are available privately.
Mosquito-borne diseases and children: Dengue fever is present in Phuket and children can be more susceptible than adults. Effective mosquito protection — especially at dawn and dusk — is important. Bangkok Hospital Phuket handles dengue fever cases regularly and knows the management well. Malaria is not present in Phuket itself.
Best Family Areas
Best Areas for Expat Families in Phuket
Area choice matters significantly for family life. The main considerations: proximity to the school you've chosen, access to family-friendly beaches (calm, safe swimming), and the strength of the expat family community in that neighbourhood.
- Bang Tao / Laguna: The most popular family area for BISP and UWC families. Laguna Beach is calm and safe for children, excellent facilities nearby, strong international community. Higher cost of living than south Phuket.
- Rawai / Nai Harn: Popular with HeadStart families and those wanting a more relaxed, community feel. Rawai market and local village life gives children genuine Thai cultural exposure. Nai Harn lake is excellent for running and cycling. Slightly less international infrastructure than Bang Tao.
- Koh Kaew / east coast: Practical for BISP families. Less scenic than west coast but good residential infrastructure and lower accommodation costs than beachside areas.
- Chalong: Central location gives good access to all schools. Solid expat community, practical infrastructure. Less beachside but Chalong Bay's access to islands and water activities compensates.

FAQ
Common Questions from Expat Parents
Is Phuket a good place to raise children?
Phuket is genuinely excellent for children in many respects: extraordinary outdoor lifestyle, safe international schools, a multi-cultural environment, year-round warm weather, and a strong expat family community. The honest challenges are road safety, the significant cost of international schooling, and limited teen social options compared to major cities. For younger children especially, the lifestyle advantages are substantial.
What are the best international schools in Phuket?
The three most respected are BISP (British International School Phuket) in Koh Kaew offering the British National Curriculum and IB; UWC Thailand in Thalang offering the IB curriculum; and HeadStart International School in Rawai offering the English National Curriculum. Annual fees range from ฿400,000 to over ฿800,000 per child per year plus enrollment and one-time fees.
How much does it cost to send a child to international school in Phuket?
Annual school fees range from approximately ฿400,000–฿870,000 per year depending on the school and year group. One-time enrollment fees add ฿30,000–฿200,000+. Capital levy fees at some schools add ฿100,000–฿500,000 (sometimes refundable). Budget ฿500,000–฿950,000 total in year one per child at a top-tier school. This is usually the single largest family expense in Phuket.
Is healthcare for children good in Phuket?
Yes. Bangkok Hospital Phuket is JCI-accredited and has a well-regarded paediatrics department. Both Bangkok Hospital and Siriroj Hospital have experienced paediatricians. For routine vaccinations, well-baby checks, and most childhood illnesses, Phuket is more than adequate. For complex paediatric conditions, Bangkok's hospitals provide a higher tier of specialist care.
Do I need health insurance for my children in Phuket?
Yes, absolutely. International private health insurance is essential for children in Phuket — at Bangkok Hospital Phuket, paediatric consultations run ฿1,500–฿2,500, and any hospitalisation or procedure costs are significant without cover. Most family policies include children. Cigna, Pacific Cross, and Allianz Care are the most common among expat families. Get this in place before you arrive.
