Phuket is genuinely one of the world's best places to train Muay Thai. The concentration of professional-standard gyms in Chalong and Rawai — within a 5km radius — is unmatched anywhere outside Bangkok. Whether you're a competitive fighter, a fitness enthusiast, or someone who wants to try a few classes while living here, Phuket delivers.
I've trained at most of the main gyms over six years in Phuket. Here's what each actually looks like from the inside.

Detailed Gym Profiles
Tiger Muay Thai
The biggest and most internationally recognised Muay Thai gym in Phuket. Over 400 daily training sessions across Muay Thai, MMA, BJJ, Crossfit and wrestling. A proper full-service facility with a pool, café and accommodation on site.
What makes Tiger stand out for expats: it has consistent beginner classes every morning, English-speaking Thai coaches, and a genuinely international crowd. You'll meet long-term residents here, not just short-term tourists.
AKA Thailand
American Kickboxing Academy's Thailand base. World-class MMA facility that's become one of the top gyms in Asia for serious fighters. The Muay Thai programme is elite but the real draw is the MMA environment — BJJ, wrestling, boxing, all under one roof.
Best for: experienced fighters or those wanting professional MMA training alongside Muay Thai. Less suited to complete beginners than Tiger.
Sinbi Muay Thai
One of the most respected mid-tier gyms in Phuket. Authentic training environment with experienced Thai trainers, a strong competitive programme, and genuinely good value for money. Smaller than Tiger, which means more personalised coaching.
The surrounding Rawai area is one of the best for expat life — Sinbi is embedded in the local community in a way that larger tourist-facing gyms aren't.
Phuket Top Team
Serious competition-focused training. Strong Thai boxing programme and an excellent BJJ and grappling department. This is where you go if you're aiming to fight or compete — the coaching is at a higher technical level than tourist-oriented gyms.
Rawai Muay Thai
Smaller, community-focused gym with a loyal following among long-term Rawai expats. Excellent trainer-to-student ratio. Not the biggest facility, but the training quality is solid and the atmosphere is welcoming. Good option if you're living in Rawai or Nai Harn and want to train regularly without commuting.
Local Thai Gyms
If you want the most authentic training experience and the lowest price, local Thai gyms scattered around Chalong and Rawai charge ฿200–400 per session. You'll need some Thai or a basic understanding of Muay Thai to get the most from them. But the training quality is often excellent — these are where local Thai fighters train.
What to Bring to Your First Session
- Shorts: Muay Thai shorts or regular athletic shorts. No long trousers on the mats.
- Wraps: Buy hand wraps before your first session (฿100–200 at any sportswear shop or gym shop). Most gyms will sell them.
- Gloves: Most gyms rent gloves for ฿50–100. Buying your own (฿800–2,500 for a decent pair) is better hygienically if training regularly.
- Water: Lots of it. Training in Phuket humidity is intense — especially in hot season (March–May).
- Mouthguard: Essential if you plan to spar. Cheap ones at Tesco for ฿150, proper ones at the gym shop for ฿500–1,500.
Muay Thai for Fitness vs Competitive Training
Most long-term Phuket expats train Muay Thai for fitness rather than competition. The typical pattern is 4–6 sessions per week, focusing on bag work, pad work and fitness rather than sparring. At this level, Tiger and Sinbi both offer excellent programmes, and the monthly cost (฿8,000–12,000) is comparable to a premium gym in the UK or Australia.
If you want to compete, Phuket has regular local shows (Patong Stadium, Rawai Muay Thai events) and the training quality at Phuket Top Team, AKA and Tiger is genuinely world-class. Many international fighters base themselves here specifically because the quality of training and sparring partners is so high.
Insider tip: Train in the early mornings (6:30–9am) or evenings (5–7pm) to avoid the worst of the heat. High noon training sessions in April are brutal even for experienced athletes. Most serious trainers in Phuket follow a morning-only or two-a-day schedule, not midday.
