Phuket is one of the best places in Southeast Asia to raise children. World-class international schools, outdoor activities year-round, safe communities, and a warm culture that genuinely welcomes children. The families who move here rarely regret it — but success requires choosing the right area and school from the start.

The expat family community in Phuket is large, established, and welcoming. In Bang Tao, Rawai, and Chalong you'll find hundreds of international families who have made this island home. School runs, beach afternoons, weekend sailing lessons, family brunches at Boat Avenue — this is a real community, not a transient tourist crowd.

International Schools in Phuket

School choice is the single most important decision for families moving to Phuket. Choose your school first, then choose your area based on proximity. Commuting 45 minutes each way for school runs on Phuket roads is nobody's idea of quality family time.

British Curriculum · Ages 2–18

BISP — British International School Phuket

📍 Koh Kaew (near Phuket Town) 💰 550,000–900,000 THB/year

The island's flagship international school. IGCSE and A-Level programmes, strong academics, excellent sports facilities including a 50m pool. Most popular school for UK and European families. Long waiting lists — apply 6–12 months in advance. Boarding available for 6th form. Parents tend to live in Koh Kaew, Phuket Town, and nearby areas.

IB Curriculum · Ages 4–18

UWC Thailand (United World College)

📍 Kamala (western coast) 💰 600,000–1,000,000 THB/year

An impressive campus perched on a hillside above Kamala beach. IB Primary Years Programme through IB Diploma. Genuinely international student body from 50+ countries. Strong arts, sustainability, and global citizenship focus. Families typically live in Kamala or Surin. Active parent community. Read our full UWC Thailand review.

British Curriculum · Ages 2–18

HeadStart International School

📍 Rawai (southern Phuket) 💰 400,000–650,000 THB/year

The go-to school for south Phuket families (Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong). British curriculum, smaller community than BISP, known for pastoral care. More affordable than BISP and UWC. Strong sports and outdoor education programme. Easy for families based in the Rawai/Nai Harn/Chalong triangle. Read our HeadStart review.

US Curriculum · Ages 3–18

QSI International School Phuket

📍 Bang Tao / Cherng Talay 💰 380,000–580,000 THB/year

American curriculum, smaller school with a tight-knit community. Perfect for US expat families or those who prefer an American approach. Located in the north, convenient for Bang Tao and Laguna families. More affordable fees than the other options. Excellent teacher-to-student ratios.

💡 Apply Early — Waiting Lists Are Real

BISP and UWC Thailand regularly have waiting lists, especially for popular year groups. Apply as soon as you have a confirmed move date — even if it's 12 months away. Many families secure a place, then plan their relocation around the school start date. September intake and January intake are both available at most Phuket schools.

Best Areas for Families in Phuket

★★★★★ Best Overall

Bang Tao & Laguna

Laguna resort complex, beach clubs, bike paths, villas with gardens, close to UWC and QSI. The most "organised" family area. Higher rents but genuinely excellent infrastructure.

★★★★★ Best South

Rawai & Nai Harn

Quiet village atmosphere, expat community, HeadStart school nearby, Nai Harn lake, beach access. More affordable than north. Ideal for families wanting real Thai neighbourhood life.

★★★★☆ Convenient

Chalong

Central location, affordable rents, close to everything. Not beachfront but 10 minutes to multiple beaches. Community around Chalong Bay. Good Thai school options if budget is tight.

★★★★☆ Scenic

Kamala

Quiet beach village, UWC school 5 minutes away. Increasingly popular with families. Fewer facilities than Bang Tao but growing fast. Better value than Surin next door.

The areas to avoid for family life: Patong (nightlife, tourist crowds, not suitable for daily family life) and Karon/Kata (tourist-oriented, less expat community infrastructure). Read full area guides →

Thai schools provide immersion in the language and culture, and many expat children in Thai schools thrive. See our full schools guide →

Get Your Family Covered Before You Arrive

Family health insurance is non-negotiable in Phuket. Bangkok Hospital Phuket's paediatrics department is excellent — but one hospital visit without insurance can cost 10,000–50,000 THB. Get family coverage sorted.

Children's Activities in Phuket

One of the most common things expat parents say is that their children are happier and more active in Phuket than they ever were back home. The outdoor lifestyle genuinely transforms children's days.

Water activities: Splash Jungle Waterpark (Bang Tao area, around 800 THB per child), sailing lessons at Ao Chalong Yacht Club (from 2,500 THB for a beginner course), windsurfing at Nai Yang beach. Most expat kids who grow up in Phuket become excellent swimmers and sailors.

Martial arts: Multiple children's Muay Thai and BJJ programmes — Tiger Muay Thai in Chalong runs excellent kids' classes, as does Phuket Top Team. Most gyms offer kids' sessions from around 500 THB.

Nature & animals: Phuket Elephant Sanctuary (ethical, no riding) near Bang Tao is exceptional for children. Sea Turtle Conservation at Nai Yang. Snorkelling day trips to Coral Island or the Similan Islands (day trips from Chalong Pier, 1,500–2,500 THB per person).

Cultural activities: Thai cooking classes in Phuket Town (kids love them), pottery classes, Thai classical dance. The Phuket Old Town area is wonderful for children to explore — colourful Sino-Portuguese buildings, street art, and fantastic food.

Healthcare for Children in Phuket

Bangkok Hospital Phuket (076-254-425) has a dedicated children's ward and paediatrics department. Dr. Sommart and the team are experienced with expat children. Siriroj Hospital in Phuket Town (076-361-888) is the government hospital — excellent for routine paediatric care at lower cost.

Vaccinations: Thailand has a national vaccination programme. Government health centres in each area (the local "health station" or sathanee anumai) offer free vaccinations following the Thai schedule. Private international vaccination schedules (including meningitis, HPV, chickenpox boosters) are available at Bangkok Hospital for around 500–1,500 THB per vaccine.

Dental care for children is excellent and affordable — a routine check-up and clean is around 500–800 THB at a private dental clinic. Many clinics have child-friendly environments. See our healthcare guide for recommendations.
