Every family that's relocated to Phuket will tell you the same thing: the school fees will dominate your budget in a way nothing else quite does. Two kids at an international school and you've already spent ฿70,000–140,000/month before you've paid rent or bought a bag of rice. This is the honest reality of family life in Phuket, and it's the starting point for any sensible budget planning.

That said — Phuket is genuinely extraordinary for raising children. World-class international schools, beach access, year-round outdoor sports, a safe environment, extraordinary food, and a community of international families who quickly become your tribe. The question is whether the numbers work for your family. Let's find out.

This guide is based on a family of 4: 2 adults + 2 children of primary/secondary school age at an international school. We present three realistic monthly budget tiers.

🔑 Monthly Budget Summary: Family of 4 in Phuket 2026

  • Budget family (local/bilingual school): ฿80,000 – ฿110,000/month

The School Fees Reality

Before we get to the monthly budget tables, let's deal with the elephant in the room: international school fees. These are the single biggest variable in a Phuket family budget and they vary enormously between schools.

SchoolAnnual Fees (฿)Monthly EquivalentCurriculum
Kajonkiet International (KIS)250,000 – 400,00021,000 – 33,000Thai bilingual + IB
HeadStart International350,000 – 500,00029,000 – 42,000British/Cambridge
BISP (British International School)550,000 – 800,00046,000 – 67,000British / IB
UWC Thailand600,000 – 850,00050,000 – 71,000IB

Note: These are tuition fees only. Most international schools also charge registration fees, capital levy, and activity fees on top. Add 15–25% to the annual figures for total school cost including extras. For two children, double it.

🌴 Insider Tip Many expat families save ฿400,000–700,000/year per child by choosing HeadStart over BISP or UWC. The quality difference is real but smaller than the fee difference. HeadStart consistently produces strong results and many families are very happy there. Don't assume you need the most expensive school.

Best Areas in Phuket for Families

The Bang Tao and Laguna area in north-west Phuket is the most popular choice for families with children at BISP and UWC — both schools are within 10–15 minutes. The Laguna resort complex provides a managed, family-friendly environment. Rents are higher here but families trade convenience for cost.

Rawai and Nai Harn in the south are popular with families who prioritise community and value over school proximity. The south Phuket expat community is large, diverse, and well-established. School commutes are longer (20–35 minutes to Bang Tao-area schools) but many families find the lower rent worth the drive.

Koh Kaew, just north of Phuket Town, offers good value and is notably close to BISP's campus — a practical choice that many BISP families use.

What You Get That You Can't Price

The monthly budget numbers are real and the school fees are real. But there's a category that doesn't fit in any spreadsheet: what your children's daily life actually looks like in Phuket.

School swimming galas where the pool is actually outdoors and the sun is always shining. Weekend football on a full-sized field. Snorkelling on Coral Island on a Sunday. Learning to surf at Kata beach. A Muay Thai lesson after school. Growing up with friends from 40 different countries. Living in a place where the outdoors is genuinely accessible, the weather makes outdoor activities normal rather than seasonal, and the education is excellent.

Most expat parents in Phuket with school-age children will tell you, simply, that it's the best decision they ever made. The budget needs to work — and we've tried to give you honest numbers above. But if it works, the quality of family life here is genuinely hard to match.

Family Budget in Phuket: FAQs

How much does a family of 4 need per month in Phuket?

With two children at a mid-tier international school (e.g., HeadStart), a family of 4 realistically needs ฿150,000–200,000/month for a comfortable lifestyle. With children at BISP or UWC, budget ฿250,000–350,000+. The school fees are the dominant variable — everything else is similar to other expat destinations.

What are international school fees in Phuket?

Annual fees range from ฿250,000/year at bilingual schools (Kajonkiet) to ฿850,000+/year at the top international schools (BISP, UWC). Monthly equivalent per child ranges from ฿21,000 to ฿71,000. Most families also pay registration and activity fees on top of tuition. See our full Phuket international schools comparison for detailed fee breakdowns.

Which area of Phuket is best for families?

Bang Tao/Laguna suits families wanting to be near BISP and UWC with resort-style infrastructure. Rawai/Nai Harn suits families wanting community feel and value. Koh Kaew offers proximity to BISP and good rental value. Most families without a specific school preference choose between Rawai (value + community) and Bang Tao (convenience + amenities).

Is Phuket safe for raising children?

Yes — Phuket is considered very safe for families. Traffic is the main hazard to manage (teach children road safety early). The expat community is close-knit, schools are secure, and violent crime is rare. The weather provides outdoor lifestyle year-round. Most expat parents report their children thriving in Phuket's environment.

What visa does a family use to live in Phuket?

Most working expat families use a Non-B (business/work) visa for the working parent, with the partner and children on dependent Non-O visas tied to the working parent's permit. Families not working can use the Thailand Elite or LTR visa. See our full Phuket visa guide for family-specific options.
