I have a running joke with expat friends in Phuket: anyone who's visited Krabi once is convinced they should have moved there instead. The limestone karsts, the Emerald Cave, the less-developed beaches. It looks otherworldly. But looks and livability are different things — and after six years in Phuket and frequent visits to Krabi, here's what the actual comparison looks like.
Short version: Phuket is an island with the infrastructure of a small city. Krabi is a province with infrastructure that befits a province. Both are beautiful. Your choice depends almost entirely on what stage of life you're at and what you're prepared to trade off.

Cost of Living: Krabi Is Cheaper, But the Gap Is Closing
Krabi has historically been significantly cheaper than Phuket. The gap is real but narrowing as Krabi's tourism profile has grown — particularly in Ao Nang, which is now firmly tourist-priced for many things.
Where Krabi saves you money:
- Housing: A two-bedroom house with garden in a quiet Krabi area: THB 10,000–16,000/month. Equivalent in Rawai or Chalong (Phuket): THB 18,000–28,000.
- Local food: Thai restaurants and markets in Krabi Town and Klong Muang area are modestly cheaper than equivalent Phuket spots.
- Services (hairdressers, mechanics, etc.): Marginally cheaper — though the gap has shrunk.
Where the savings don't materialise:
- International or Western dining — Ao Nang's tourist-facing restaurants are now Phuket-priced
- Health insurance — same cost wherever you're based in Thailand
- International school fees — if your kids attend school in Phuket, you're paying Phuket fees plus travel costs from Krabi, or you're boarding
Insider tip: If you have school-age children and you base yourself in Krabi, the hidden costs of either commuting to Phuket schools or paying for boarding quickly eat the housing savings. The maths only works if you're retired or working remotely without dependants.
Healthcare: Phuket Wins Clearly
This is the most clear-cut category in the comparison. Phuket has Bangkok Hospital Phuket (internationally accredited, English-speaking specialists, advanced diagnostics), Siriroj Hospital (government-affiliated, good surgical team), Vachira Phuket (largest government hospital on the island), and multiple private international clinics.
Krabi has Krabi Hospital (adequate for routine care, Thai language dominant), a few private clinics in Ao Nang, and that's essentially it. For anything serious — cardiac events, surgery, cancer treatment, complex diagnostics — you're getting in a car or helicopter to Phuket. That's a 2+ hour journey.
For younger expats without significant health concerns, this isn't necessarily disqualifying. For anyone over 50 or managing chronic conditions, it's a serious consideration. Your health insurance plan should include medical evacuation cover if you're based in Krabi. See our expat health insurance guide for plans that cover Thailand-wide treatment and evacuation.

Compare Health Plans → Pacific Cross Plans →Schools: A Decisive Factor for Families
Phuket has three strong international schools that are well-regarded by the expat community:
- British International School Phuket (BISP) — British curriculum, strong extracurriculars, established expat community around it. Located in Koh Kaew area.
- UWC Thailand — IB curriculum, international student body, strong academics. Near Thalang in the north of the island.
- HeadStart International School — British-founded, multiple Phuket campuses, good pastoral care reputation.
Krabi has no comparable international schools. There are some small private bilingual schools in Krabi Town, but these don't match the curriculum depth or university-preparation track record of the Phuket options. If you have children needing international schooling, Krabi effectively requires you to either commute to Phuket (impractical daily), board your children in Phuket (expensive and emotionally complex), or accept a lower educational standard.
This single factor is why most expat families with school-age children choose Phuket over Krabi, full stop.
Airport Connectivity
Phuket International Airport receives direct flights from London (Heathrow), Frankfurt, Seoul, Tokyo, Sydney, Dubai, and numerous other hubs — essential for anyone who travels frequently for work or visits family in Europe, Australia, or the US.
Krabi International Airport is functional and comfortable, but receives mainly Bangkok connections (Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang), plus some regional routes to Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and China. For anyone flying internationally, Krabi usually means a Bangkok connection — adding 2–4 hours to every international trip.
For purely regional travel (Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui), Krabi Airport is perfectly fine. For people with global travel needs, the difference is meaningful.
Krabi's Genuine Advantages
I've been making Krabi sound like a consolation prize, which isn't fair. There are areas where Krabi genuinely wins:
The scenery is breathtaking. The karst limestone cliffs rising from the sea around Railay Beach, Ton Sai, and Klong Muang are among the most dramatic landscapes in Southeast Asia. Phuket has great beaches — Kata, Kamala, Surin are genuinely beautiful — but nothing with the visual drama of Krabi's karsts. If you're choosing based on beauty, Krabi delivers.
It's quieter. Outside high season, Krabi Town feels like a real Thai provincial town. That's appealing if you find Phuket's relentless tourism exhaust you. Klong Muang beach (30km north of Krabi Town) is one of the finest stretches of beach in southern Thailand — and you can often have significant sections of it to yourself even in high season.
Phi Phi Islands access is easier. Koh Phi Phi is equally accessible from Krabi and Phuket, but the journey from Ao Nang is marginally shorter and sometimes cheaper.
Rock climbing. The Railay and Ton Sai areas are world-class rock climbing destinations. If you're a serious climber or want to learn, Krabi offers what no other part of southern Thailand can match.
The Right Expat Profile for Each
Choose Phuket if you: have school-age children; have significant healthcare needs; travel internationally several times per year; want a large expat social circle; work in or around Phuket Town; or need more than a limited dining and entertainment scene.
Consider Krabi if you: are retired or work fully remotely; have no dependants in local schooling; are in good health with robust insurance; prioritise natural beauty and quiet over infrastructure; are drawn to climbing, kayaking, or diving; and are comfortable with a small community and occasional Phuket trips for medical care or shopping.
Insider tip: If you're genuinely torn, try the Krabi trial. Rent a place in Klong Muang or Krabi Town for 3 months before committing to a full move. The things that seem charming on a visit — the quiet, the simplicity — reveal their downsides over months: the distance to a good hospital, the limited social options, the need to drive to Phuket for things you could walk to in Rawai. Some people fall in love and never leave. Others return to Phuket gratefully.
Visa Considerations
Visa rules are the same whether you're in Krabi or Phuket — Thailand's immigration system is national, not island-specific. The practical difference is in local support. Phuket has numerous excellent visa agents, immigration lawyers, and expat-specialist accountants. Krabi has some basic immigration services but the specialist expat advice ecosystem is thin. For anything complex (LTR visa applications, retirement visa renewals, work permit queries), most Krabi-based expats either use Phuket agents or Bangkok-based ones. See our Phuket visa guide for the main visa types — these apply equally to Krabi residents.
