Koh Yao Yai from Phuket: Day Trips, Living & Getting There 2026

By Phuket Expat Guide Team Published: 21 April 2026 ~2,500 words · 10 min read

Koh Yao Yai sits in the middle of Phang Nga Bay — larger and quieter than its more-famous neighbour Koh Yao Noi, and almost entirely off the radar of the package-holiday crowd. If you're based in Phuket and you've done the Phi Phi run and the Similan day trip, this is your next island discovery. It's 30 minutes from Bang Rong Pier, costs almost nothing to get to, and feels like southern Thailand did 20 years ago.

I've been out here a dozen times over six years in Phuket. Some days just for a long lunch and a scooter ride, once for a five-day digital detox in a wooden bungalow with no AC and no WiFi. I've seen expats try to live here full-time. Here's what you actually need to know.

Getting from Phuket to Koh Yao Yai

Private longtailAny pier arrangement35–45 min฿1,500–2,500 whole boatFlexible

Bang Rong Pier is in the north of Phuket near Ao Po — about 45 minutes drive from Rawai, 30 minutes from Bang Tao. From central Phuket Town, allow 25 minutes. Grab doesn't always reach Bang Rong Pier — take a car, rent a scooter, or arrange a driver. Parking at the pier is ฿50 per day.

Insider tip: The last ferry back from Koh Yao Yai to Bang Rong leaves around 5:00–5:30pm during high season (earlier in rainy season). If you're planning to stay for sunset or dinner, budget for an overnight or arrange a private longtail return. Don't miss the last boat — there's no late-night option.

The Beaches of Koh Yao Yai

Laem Haad Beach

⭐ Most famous

The iconic sandbar that stretches into Phang Nga Bay at low tide. Best photographed at sunrise or dusk. Not ideal for swimming — shallow, but spectacular scenery with karst backdrop.

Baan Tha Khao Beach

⭐ Best for swimming

Long, quiet beach on the west coast. Calm water in high season, good for swimming and snorkelling. A few low-key beach restaurants serving seafood. Very little tourist infrastructure.

Lo Paret Beach

⭐ Most secluded

Requires a short trek or scooter ride on a rough track. Almost always empty. The kind of beach you have entirely to yourself on a weekday. Basic shade from casuarina trees.

Klong Hia Beach

⭐ Sunset views

West coast beach with clear sightlines to the sun setting behind the karst islands of Phang Nga Bay. Small fishing pier gives the view some foreground. Local atmosphere.

A word on managing expectations: Koh Yao Yai's beaches are not Nai Harn or Surin. The water is greenish-murky in rainy season, the sand is fine but not powder-white. What you're here for is the scenery — the karst tower backdrop of Phang Nga Bay, the quiet fishing village atmosphere, the feeling of being somewhere real.
