Maya Bay entry: Timed, capped at 375 visitors — pre-book essential
Best season: November–April
Koh Phi Phi is arguably the most iconic destination in the Andaman Sea — the jaw-dropping limestone cliffs, the neon-turquoise water, and Maya Bay (made famous by The Beach) draw millions of visitors a year. As a Phuket expat, you will almost certainly bring visiting friends and family here. Done right, it is genuinely one of the best days you can have in Thailand. Done wrong — you join the sardine parade at peak time — and it's just crowds, heat, and disappointment.
Here's how to do it right.
⚠ Maya Bay: Pre-booking Is Now Essential
Following its 2022 reopening after a 3-year closure for reef restoration, Maya Bay operates a strict visitor cap (375 people at any time) with timed entry windows. Your tour operator must pre-book your slot. If you arrive without a booking or outside your window, you will be turned away regardless of how far you've come. Book tours that guarantee Maya Bay entry, not just "Phi Phi Island".
Getting There: Speedboat vs Ferry
Speedboat Day Trip (Recommended)
The standard approach for expats and tourists alike. Most tours depart from Rasada Pier (near Phuket Town) or Chalong Pier with hotel pickup included. A full-day itinerary covers: Maya Bay (Phi Phi Leh), Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach, snorkelling at Ko Mai Pai (Bamboo Island), and lunch at Phi Phi Don village.
The speedboat gets you there in under an hour each way, maximising your time on the islands. The return trip is usually around 4:30–5:30pm, back at your hotel by 7pm.
Public Ferry (Budget Option)
Ferries run from Rasada Pier several times daily (check current schedule — typically 8am, 11am, 2pm). The longer crossing means a day trip leaves you with less time on the island. Best used if you plan to stay overnight on Phi Phi Don and return next day — which is actually the better way to experience the islands if time allows.
Private Speedboat Charter
For a group of 6–10 people, a private charter costs similar per-person to a group tour but you set your own itinerary, timing, and stops. Arrive at Maya Bay in the early morning before the tour groups (before 8:30am), swim at your own pace, and explore the less-visited east side of Phi Phi Leh. Charter through any Phuket marina or boat operator — Chalong Pier has several reputable operators.
What to See on Koh Phi Phi
- Maya Bay (Phi Phi Leh): The famous bay from The Beach — vertical limestone walls, protected coral, and turquoise water. Snorkelling happens outside the bay (Hin Klang). Time your visit early (before 9am) for fewer people.
- Pileh Lagoon: An enclosed emerald lagoon on the east side of Phi Phi Leh, accessible only by boat. No swimming (it's a protected area) but extraordinary for photos. Often missed by group tours — worth insisting your operator includes it.
- Viking Cave (Tham Phaya Nak): Cliff paintings (1,000–2,000 years old) and active sea swallow nest collection platforms. Viewable from the water — you cannot enter.
- Ko Mai Pai (Bamboo Island): 20 minutes north of Phi Phi Don. White sand, crystal water, good snorkelling with healthy coral. Less crowded than Maya Bay.
- Monkey Beach: Short stop where macaques live — charming but don't feed them (they bite). Included in most group tours.
- Phi Phi Don Village: Lunch stop on the main inhabited island. The waterfront is touristy but the food is decent. Try the fish and chips or pad thai at the waterfront restaurants if you need a break from Thai food.
Cost Comparison

| Private speedboat charter | ฿18,000–30,000/boat | Full boat, custom itinerary, guide | Groups 6+, families, photography |
| Public ferry (return) | ฿700/person | Ferry transport only | Overnight stays, budget travellers |
| National park fee | ฿300 adults | Entry to Phi Phi Leh/Maya Bay | Included in most tour prices |
Best Time and What to Avoid
The prime window is November to April. December and January offer the clearest water, calmest seas, and best snorkelling visibility. February–April gets busier but weather is still excellent.
Avoid the 10am–2pm rush at Maya Bay if possible — every tour group from Phuket, Krabi, and Koh Lanta arrives simultaneously. An early private charter or a tour that prioritises other spots first can make a huge difference. Also avoid weekends in Thai holiday periods (Songkran, New Year, Chinese New Year) when boats number in the hundreds.
💡 Expat Secret: Stay Overnight
Day trips are great, but overnight on Phi Phi Don is transformative. After the day-trippers leave on the afternoon boats, Phi Phi becomes a different place — warm night air, bioluminescent plankton in the water, a handful of long-stay travellers on the beach. If you have expat friends visiting, consider a 2-day trip: arrive morning, snorkel all day, stay at Zeavola or PP Princess Resort, return next afternoon. It is one of the best short breaks you can take from Phuket.
