KBank Quick Facts for Phuket Expats
- SWIFT/BIC code: KASITHBK (use for all Wise and international wire transfers)
- Best expat branch: Yaowarat Road, Phuket Town (most English-speaking staff)
- Visa required: Officially non-immigrant, but tourist visa possible at some branches with supporting docs
- Account minimum: No minimum balance on standard savings (฿100 to open)
- ATM network: 12,000+ ATMs nationwide — largest in Thailand
- K PLUS app: Full-featured, works overseas, supports PromptPay and bill payment
- Non-OA ฿800k: Accepted by Phuket Immigration — balance letter takes 1–3 working days
If you're going to bank in Thailand, Kasikorn Bank — KBank — is worth a serious look. It runs the largest ATM network in the country, its K PLUS mobile app is genuinely good, and after seven years in Phuket I've found it consistently easier to deal with than the alternatives for day-to-day expat banking needs.
That said, KBank isn't perfect. Account opening can be trickier than Bangkok Bank for retirement visa holders, and not all Phuket branches have English-speaking staff. This guide tells you exactly where to go, what to bring, and how to get the most out of a KBank account once you have it.
For a broader view of all your options, see our complete Phuket banking guide. If you're specifically weighing KBank against Bangkok Bank, I run through that comparison later in this article.
Why KBank Is Popular with Phuket Expats
KBank's green logo is everywhere in Phuket — at Villa Market, Makro, Central Festival, and dozens of smaller ATMs tucked into petrol stations and 7-Elevens across the island. That ubiquity matters more than you might think when you're living here full-time and want to avoid the ฿220 foreign ATM fee that every bank charges on non-member withdrawals.
Three things put KBank ahead for most Phuket residents:
- K PLUS app: Widely regarded as Thailand's best banking app. PromptPay transfers, QR bill payment, instant notifications, and a clean interface that works reliably. You can pay your condo management fee, top up an AIS SIM, or split a dinner bill in Rawai without opening a browser.
- ATM coverage: 12,000+ ATMs nationwide. Across Phuket you'll find KBank ATMs in Bang Tao, Kamala, Patong, Kata, Chalong, Phuket Town, and everywhere in between.
- Wise compatibility: KBank accounts pair seamlessly with Wise for international transfers. SWIFT code KASITHBK is already built into Wise's routing database, and transfers typically clear in one to two business days.
The main trade-off: KBank is more rigid on visa requirements than Bangkok Bank, and the international transfer infrastructure for Non-OA purposes is slightly less developed at some branches. For retirement visa holders who need a dedicated ฿800,000 account with reliable letter issuance, Bangkok Bank's Phangnga Road branch has a slight edge — though KBank's Yaowarat Road branch handles it perfectly well.

See Your Wise Transfer FeeWhich Phuket KBank Branch to Use
There are around 15 KBank branches on the island, but for expats opening an account, a few stand out. Go to the right branch and the process is relatively smooth. Walk into the wrong one and you'll likely be told to come back with more documents — or redirected elsewhere entirely.
KBank Yaowarat Road — Phuket Town
Best for ExpatsThe go-to branch for expat account opening in Phuket. Staff are experienced with foreign customers, some speak good English, and the branch manager has a track record of being pragmatic about visa documentation. If you're on a tourist visa and need to open an account, this is your best shot. Bring every document you have and ask politely — it's branch manager discretion, but the answer here is more likely to be yes than elsewhere. Located on Yaowarat Road near the old town, easy to reach by taxi or songthaew from anywhere in Phuket Town.
KBank Central Festival Phuket — Wichitsongkram Road
Good for English SpeakersInside Central Festival mall, this branch deals with enough tourist and expat traffic that English communication is generally fine. Convenient if you're already shopping there, and good for routine banking after your account is open. For first-time account opening, Yaowarat Road is still better — but this branch works well as a backup, especially for certified document requests like balance letters.
KBank Patong Beach Road
Resort Area — Go Elsewhere to OpenHeavy tourist traffic means staff are used to very simple transactions, but the branch isn't ideal for account opening. If you live in Patong and already have an account, this branch is fine for day-to-day needs. For new accounts, make the trip to Yaowarat Road — it's 25 minutes by taxi and worth it.
KBank Chalong / Rawai Area
Convenient for South Phuket ResidentsIf you live in the south — Rawai, Nai Harn, Chalong — there are KBank branches closer to home. These are perfectly fine for routine transactions and even balance letter requests. For new account opening, however, their experience with foreign customers is mixed. Worth calling ahead to confirm what documents they accept before making the trip.
Opening a KBank Account in Phuket: Step by Step
The core requirement hasn't changed: KBank's official policy is that you need a non-immigrant visa (type B for work, type O for family/retirement, type ED for students). Tourist visa holders aren't supposed to open accounts — but in practice, some branches will do it with strong supporting documents. I'll cover both scenarios below.
Gather Your Documents
Passport with current visa and most recent entry stamp are mandatory. Add: TM6 departure card (keep the bottom half), proof of address in Phuket (lease agreement, utility bill, or condo receipt), and if on a work permit — bring the original. Tourist visa applicants should also bring 3 months of home-country bank statements, employer confirmation letter, or a letter from your Phuket landlord.
Visit in the Morning, Early in the Week
KBank branches open at 10:00 and process account applications up until about 15:30. Monday to Wednesday is best — avoid Friday afternoons when branches fill with end-of-week transactions. Yaowarat Road branch has numbered queues; take a number when you arrive and wait for the foreign customer service desk.
Complete the Application Forms
KBank application forms are available in Thai and English. Staff will help you complete the Customer Information Form (CIF), which includes your address in Phuket, occupation, and source of income. Tip: write your Thai address exactly as it appears on your lease agreement. Inconsistencies slow things down.
Make the Opening Deposit
Standard KBank savings account (บัญชีออมทรัพย์) requires a minimum opening deposit of ฿1,000 in most branches, though technically ฿100 is the minimum. Bring at least ฿2,000–3,000 cash to be comfortable. The account comes with a passbook and a KBank debit card (typically issued on the spot or within 7–10 days).
Register for K PLUS
You'll need a Thai SIM card with the same number you register at the bank — K PLUS sends OTP verification to your Thai mobile number. Register in-branch if possible; staff can walk you through the initial setup. You'll need to create a 6-digit PIN. Once set up, K PLUS handles virtually everything you need without visiting a branch.
Set Up PromptPay
In K PLUS, go to Settings → PromptPay → Link your Thai phone number. Once linked, anyone can transfer money to you instantly using your mobile number — no account number needed. Crucial for paying rent via QR code, getting refunded by friends, or receiving payments if you're doing freelance work locally.
⚠ Tourist Visa Account Opening: Manage Your Expectations
KBank's official policy requires a non-immigrant visa. If you arrive on a tourist visa and the branch manager says no, that is their right. The Yaowarat Road branch is more flexible than most, but nothing is guaranteed. If you're planning to stay long-term in Phuket, getting the right visa before attempting account opening saves a lot of frustration — and often isn't as hard as people expect. See our Phuket visa guide for the options most commonly used by long-term residents.
KBank SWIFT Details for International Transfers
If you're receiving an international wire transfer — from your home bank, an employer, or via Wise — here are the exact details you'll need to provide.
KBank SWIFT / Wire Transfer Details
Important: When receiving a SWIFT transfer from overseas (not via Wise), your bank will issue a Foreign Exchange Transaction (FET) document, sometimes called a Thor Tor 3. Keep this document — you'll need it if you're applying for a retirement visa and need to show funds transferred from abroad, or if tax authorities later ask about the source of your Thai income.
Pairing KBank with Wise: The Smart Expat Setup
Most Phuket expats I know have settled into the same system: a KBank account for daily life in Thailand, and Wise for moving money from home. It works because KBank's 10-digit account number and KASITHBK SWIFT code are already in Wise's system, making setup a five-minute job.
What You Save on a £5,000 Transfer: Wise vs Your Home Bank
To set up Wise to send to your KBank account:
- Open Wise and choose Thailand (THB) as your destination
- Enter your KBank account number (10 digits, no spaces)
- Enter SWIFT code: KASITHBK
- Enter account name exactly as registered with KBank
- Confirm the transfer — Wise shows the exact THB amount before you confirm
Transfers typically arrive in KBank within one to two business days. You'll get an instant K PLUS notification when the funds land. For a detailed walkthrough of how Wise works for Thailand transfers, including tax considerations, see our Wise Thailand guide.
2024 Thai Tax Rule — Know Before You Transfer
Under Paw 161/2566, foreign income remitted to Thailand in the same calendar year it was earned may be assessable for Thai tax if you're a tax resident (180+ days/year). This affects anyone living in Phuket full-time. It doesn't change how you use KBank or Wise — but you should document the source of every large transfer and keep your FET receipts. Consult a Phuket-based tax adviser if you're earning offshore income. See our Thai tax residence guide for more detail.
K PLUS App: What You Can Do Without Visiting a Branch
K PLUS is the reason KBank is so popular for long-term residents. Once set up, you rarely need to physically visit a branch. Here's what the app handles:
| Task | In K PLUS? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Balance check | Yes | Real-time with instant notifications |
| Transfer to any Thai bank | Yes | Free via PromptPay; ฿15 flat fee via ORFT |
| QR code payments | Yes | Works at markets, restaurants, petrol stations |
| Bill payment (condo fees, utilities, AIS) | Yes | Barcode scan or manual entry |
| Request balance statement | Yes | PDF statement; not same as official balance letter |
| Fixed deposit management | Yes | Open/close term deposits in-app |
| Top up True/AIS/DTAC | Yes | Instant top-up from account |
| Wise incoming transfer status | Yes | Push notification when funds land |
| Official balance letter (Non-OA) | No — branch only | Must visit in person; 1–3 working days |
| SWIFT international outward transfer | Limited | Small amounts via app; large transfers need branch |
KBank for Non-OA Visa: The ฿800,000 Requirement
If you're on a Non-OA retirement visa, you'll need to maintain ฿800,000 in a Thai bank account and provide an official balance certificate at each annual renewal. KBank is fully accepted by Phuket Immigration for this purpose — in fact, many immigration consultants in Phuket prefer KBank because its balance letters are processed quickly at the Yaowarat Road branch.
Getting Your KBank ฿800,000 Balance Letter — Process
- Timing: Keep ฿800,000 in your account for at least 2–3 months before your visa renewal date
- Request in-branch: Visit any KBank branch (Yaowarat Road or Central Festival recommended) and ask for an "official balance certificate" — say กรุณาออกหนังสือรับรองยอดเงิน
- Documents needed: Passport, passbook, and the request form staff will give you
- Processing time: Usually same day or next working day at larger branches; 1–3 days at smaller ones
- Cost: ฿100–200 per letter
- What it shows: Current balance, average balance over a specified period, account holder name. Phuket Immigration accepts this format.
One practical note: if you're holding ฿800,000 for visa purposes, a fixed deposit (term deposit) account is worth considering. Interest rates on KBank fixed deposits in 2026 range from around 1.5–2.5% depending on term length. That's ฿12,000–20,000/year on your parked funds — not life-changing, but better than a savings account rate of 0.5–0.75%.
KBank vs Bangkok Bank: Which Should You Choose?
This is the question I get most often from new Phuket expats. The honest answer: it depends what you're primarily using the account for.
| Scenario | Better Choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily life, payments, ATM use | KBank | Larger ATM network, K PLUS app is superior |
| Non-OA retirement visa (฿800k) | Either | Both accepted; Bangkok Bank Phangnga Rd slightly smoother |
| International SWIFT transfers in | Either | Both support SWIFT; Bangkok Bank has slightly simpler FET process |
| Wise transfers in | KBank | KASITHBK is well-established in Wise's system; fewer hiccups |
| Opening on tourist visa | Bangkok Bank | Generally more flexible at Phangnga Road branch |
| Business/work permit use | Either | Both support business accounts; KBank has better corporate app |
| Living in south Phuket (Rawai/Chalong) | KBank | Better ATM coverage in southern areas |
| Living in Bang Tao / Laguna area | Either | Both have good coverage in the north-west corridor |
Many expats open both — a Bangkok Bank account for the Non-OA balance letter process, and KBank for daily transactions and Wise transfers. It's not uncommon, and there's no rule against holding accounts at multiple banks. For a full comparison of all four major banks, see our Phuket banking guide.
KBank ATMs in Phuket: What You Need to Know
KBank ATMs in Phuket charge ฿220 to non-KBank cardholders. KBank account holders transact for free on their own ATMs — which makes the large ATM network a genuine advantage if you use cash regularly (and in Phuket, outside of malls and larger restaurants, you often do).
For withdrawals with a foreign card (Wise debit, UK/EU bank card, etc.), all Thai bank ATMs charge the same ฿220 fee. Wise gives you two free withdrawals per month up to ฿6,000 each — after that, Wise charges a small additional fee on top of the Thai bank's ฿220.
KBank ATMs can be found throughout Phuket, including:
- Central Festival Phuket (multiple machines, 24/7)
- Jungceylon Mall, Patong
- Villa Market Bang Tao and Laguna area
- Nai Harn town centre and Rawai waterfront
- Chalong circle area
- Phuket Town old town streets
- Phuket Airport arrivals hall

Open a Wise Account FreeCommon Problems (and How to Solve Them)
K PLUS OTP not arriving. This almost always means your registered Thai mobile number has changed or your SIM has expired. Visit any KBank branch with your passport and the new Thai SIM to update your registered number. Takes about 20 minutes.
Account frozen after not using it. KBank accounts with zero transactions for 12+ months can be placed into "dormant" status. Reactivate by visiting a branch with your passbook and passport. Takes 20–30 minutes.
Wise transfer showing "pending" for more than 2 days. Check whether KBank required additional AML (anti-money laundering) documentation for a large incoming transfer. Amounts over ฿500,000 sometimes trigger a manual review. Call KBank's international department (02-888-8888) or visit Yaowarat Road branch with your Wise transfer confirmation.
Declined when trying to open an account. The most common reasons: tourist visa without strong supporting documents, address in Phuket not verifiable, or a branch that's simply stricter on policy. Don't give up — try Yaowarat Road branch and bring every document you have. If that fails, Bangkok Bank's Phangnga Road branch is the next option.
