Phuket is genuinely one of the best places in Asia to be a golfer. The combination of world-class courses, year-round playability (yes, even in the monsoon), and green fees that make European golfers weep with joy means expats who play quickly find golf consumes far more of their time — and budget — than expected. Here's everything you need to know.

🏌️ Quick numbers: 7+ courses within 45 minutes of Phuket Town. Green fees from ฿1,500 to ฿5,000. Caddies typically mandatory at ฿300–500. Annual memberships from ฿30,000. Tee times available all year, 7 days a week.

The Golf Courses: Ranked and Reviewed

Red Mountain Golf Club, Kathu
⭐ Best Overall
📍 Kathu (central Phuket) Par 71, 6,540 yards Opened 2008, renovated 2018

Built on a former tin mine, Red Mountain has the most dramatic course setting in Phuket — red laterite walls, deep ravines, and mountain views that distract you precisely when you're trying to stay focused on your approach. The design by Eric Bergstol is challenging without being punishing. The fairways are generous enough for mid-handicappers to enjoy, but the risk-reward par 5s will separate your playing partners quickly.

The clubhouse is excellent, the service is warm, and the pace of play is well-managed. Many expat golfers consider this their default Sunday morning destination. Located in Kathu, it's roughly 20–25 minutes from both Phuket Town and Bang Tao.

Blue Canyon Country Club, Thalang
⭐ Most Famous
📍 Thalang (north Phuket, near airport) Two 18-hole courses: Canyon + Lakes Hosted Johnnie Walker Classic 1994, 1998

Blue Canyon was Phuket's international flagship golf course for two decades — Tiger Woods played both courses here at his peak. The Canyon Course is the famous one: a former tin mine transformed into one of Southeast Asia's most photographed holes (the 14th across a ravine). The Lakes Course is equally beautiful but less celebrated. Both are maintained to a very high standard.

Located in the north near the airport, Blue Canyon is most convenient for expats in Bang Tao, Laguna, Surin and Cherng Talay. The clubhouse facilities are among the best in Phuket — full restaurant, swimming pool, changing facilities. Premium green fees reflect the prestige.

Laguna Golf Phuket, Bang Tao
⭐ Best Location
📍 Bang Tao / Laguna complex Par 71, 6,237 yards Redesigned by Christoph Städler

Laguna Golf is the most convenient course for the large expat community in Bang Tao and Laguna. Built within the Laguna resort complex, it meanders through lakes, mangroves, and coconut plantations with views across the lagoon. The course was substantially redesigned in 2016 and plays much better now than its earlier version.

This is the home course for many Bang Tao-based expats. The Laguna Phuket Triathlon transitions through this course each November. Membership here makes excellent sense for anyone living within the complex. The Pro Shop is well-stocked and staff are helpful for equipment hire and lessons.

Mission Hills Phuket Golf Resort, Sakoo
⭐ Mountain Views
📍 Sakoo, north Phuket (near airport) Par 72, 7,392 yards Designed by Schmidt-Curley

Mission Hills is Phuket's longest course — at 7,392 yards from the back tees it tests driving distance more than any other course on the island. The course climbs into the hills of north Phuket with panoramic views across to Phang Nga Bay. The signature 6th hole — a dramatic par 3 over a gorge — is one of the most photographed in Thailand.

The resort hotel is attached, making this a popular destination for golf holidays. For resident expats, it's a longer drive than most alternatives but worth the trip occasionally. Better for low-handicappers who want a genuine test of their game.

Loch Palm Golf Club, Kathu
⭐ Best Value
📍 Kathu (near Red Mountain) Par 72, 6,706 yards Opened 1994

Loch Palm is the friendly, unpretentious alternative to Phuket's more prestigious courses. Set in a valley with a large lake, it's a pleasant parkland layout that suits mid-to-high handicappers well. Green fees are among the lowest on the island, and the pace of play is generally relaxed. Popular with expat societies for regular weekday games.

The food and beverage here deserves a special mention — the Thai lunch after a round at Loch Palm is frequently cited by expat golfers as one of the better post-golf meals on the island. No snobbery, proper hospitality, excellent value. Highly recommended for budget-conscious golfers or those new to the island.

Expat Golf Societies and Clubs

One of the great joys of golf in Phuket is the vibrant expat golf social scene. Several well-organised societies run regular competitions:

  • Phuket Golf Society (PGS) — The largest and most organised. Runs weekly Stableford competitions across different courses on a rotating basis. Open to all nationalities and all handicaps. Tuesday and Thursday games are most popular with working expats, weekend games with retirees. Find them via the Phuket Expats Facebook group.
  • British Golf Society Phuket — British expat-focused but very welcoming of other nationalities. Monthly medal and Stableford competitions. Annual Ryder Cup-style event against the Australian/Kiwi group.
  • Scandinavian Golfers Phuket — Large Scandinavian community means this is one of the more active nationality groups. Very social, post-round meals are legendary.
  • Ladies' Golf Phuket — Active women's golf group with weekly games and social events. Welcome all skill levels — particularly good for expat partners who want to learn or improve.
  • Laguna Golf Members Club — For residents within the Laguna estate. Private handicap competitions and priority tee times. Annual prizes and social events tied to the Laguna hospitality calendar.

Golf Membership: Is It Worth It?

If you're playing more than once a week, membership starts to make financial sense at most courses. Typical annual memberships in 2026:

CourseAnnual Membership (THB)Includes
Laguna Golf฿48,000–65,000Unlimited rounds, priority tee times, locker, 10% F&B
Red Mountain฿55,000–80,000Unlimited rounds, caddie discount, reciprocal access
Loch Palm฿30,000–45,000Unlimited rounds, reduced caddie, monthly competitions
Blue Canyon฿80,000–120,000Both courses, full facilities, social membership options

The maths: at Laguna Golf at ฿3,000/round, membership pays for itself after about 18–22 rounds. At twice-weekly play, that's around 3 months. Many expat members are at Laguna specifically because the course is walkable from Laguna villas and the integration with the resort lifestyle is seamless.

Golf Lessons in Phuket

All major courses offer professional instruction. Hourly rates range from ฿1,200 (local pro at smaller courses) to ฿2,500 (head professional at Blue Canyon or Red Mountain). Most expats who want to improve recommend group lessons via the societies, which are typically ฿500–800/session and have the added benefit of social connection with fellow golfers.

Practical Tips for Phuket Golf

  • Book ahead — Weekend tee times at Red Mountain and Laguna can fill up 2–3 days in advance, especially November–March peak season
  • Bring cash for caddies — Most caddies expect tips beyond the standard fee, especially if you shoot well. ฿100–200 extra is standard
  • Monday mornings are golden — Quietest day, fastest pace of play, often best condition. Preferred by most expat regulars
  • Hydration is serious — Even 8am tee times are hot. Bring at least 2 litres of water; drinks from the course are priced as if they contain liquid gold
  • Monsoon golf is underrated — May–October mornings are often glorious before afternoon rain arrives. Courses are lush, green, and empty. Twilight rates are cheaper
  • Tee-time apps — GolfasianPhuket, BookTeeTimes and direct course websites all work. Occasionally different prices — worth comparing
