Living in Phuket for six years, I've had the luxury of diving on calm December mornings when visibility stretches 30 metres and you can count the spots on a whale shark. I've also bodysurfed my way off a boat during a May squall at Racha Yai. The Andaman Sea can be spectacular or savage — this guide tells you when to go, where to go, and what to pay.

Phuket sits at the gateway to the Andaman Sea, one of the world's richest marine ecosystems. Within a 40-minute boat ride of Chalong Pier you have multiple world-class dive sites. Add a two-hour liveaboard trip and the Similan Islands put you in the top-ten dive destinations on the planet.

⚕️ Medical Emergency: Decompression Chamber

Bangkok Hospital Phuket (Phuket Town) has the island's hyperbaric recompression chamber. Phone: 076-254425. If you or a buddy show any symptoms of decompression sickness — joint pain, skin mottling, numbness, breathlessness — go immediately. Don't wait for symptoms to pass. Serious cases may require evacuation to a larger facility in Bangkok.

Top Dive Sites Around Phuket

The best sites cluster around Phuket's southern tip and the islands to the south and east. Here are the sites worth your air.

Racha Yai dive site
⭐ Best for Beginners

Racha Yai (Raya Island)

40 minutes south of Chalong Pier, Racha Yai is Phuket's most popular day-dive destination — and for good reason. Multiple bays offer shallow, calm water with good visibility year-round. Look for reef fish, leopard sharks, and the resident bumphead parrotfish school.

Best Marine Life

Shark Point (Hin Musang)

Three pinnacles rising from 25m, famous for leopard shark sightings (they sleep on the sand during the day). Also expect seahorses, ghost pipefish, and magnificent anemone fields. Diveable year-round — the east-facing location offers protection from monsoon swells.

Depth: 12–25m Year-round 45 min from Chalong
King Cruiser wreck dive
Best Wreck

King Cruiser Wreck

This 85-metre passenger ferry sank in 1997 (accidentally hit Anemone Reef) and now sits at 32m, completely encrusted with hard and soft corals. Great penetration opportunities for advanced divers. Lions, scorpion and frogfish haunt the wreck year-round.

Depth: 16–32m Advanced Year-round
Anemone Reef Phuket diving
Best Reef

Anemone Reef

A submerged pinnacle absolutely carpeted in anemones and anemonefish — including the rare pink skunk clownfish. Usually dived as part of a day trip that includes King Cruiser Wreck and Shark Point. Current can be strong; experienced divers only in peak season.

The Similan Islands — Phuket's Crown Jewel

Two hours north of Phuket by liveaboard, the Similan Islands (Mu Ko Similan National Park) offer some of Asia's finest diving: granite boulders, drop-offs, cleaning stations, and good pelagic encounters including whale sharks and manta rays. Important: The park closes 15 May to 15 October every year by royal decree — no exceptions. Day trips are possible from a speed boat but most divers do 3–5 night liveaboard trips from October to April. Prices range from ฿8,000 for budget liveaboards to ฿30,000+ for luxury vessels.

Monthly Visibility Guide

The Andaman Sea has two distinct seasons. The northeast monsoon (November–April) delivers Phuket's best diving. The southwest monsoon (May–October) brings rougher seas, but east-coast sites remain accessible and the water temperature stays a warm 28–30°C year-round.

Best Dive Shops in Phuket

Stick to PADI-certified dive centres with proven safety records. Chalong (Ao Chalong) is the main hub — most boats depart from Chalong Pier. Karon and Kata also have good operators. Avoid the cheapest Patong touts; cut-rate diving means cut-rate safety.

01
Dive Asia
Karon Beach (secondary base Chalong)

One of Phuket's oldest and most respected dive shops, operating since 1993. PADI 5-Star IDC centre. Specialises in Similan liveaboards and local day trips. Small class sizes and attentive instructors. Equipment well-maintained. Courses from ฿2,500 (Try Dive) to ฿55,000 (Divemaster).

02
Scuba Cat Diving
Soi Ta-Iad, Karon (near Karon Centre)

PADI 5-Star IDC centre with friendly staff and well-organised trips. Popular with expats and repeat divers. Run their own liveaboard to the Similans and Richelieu Rock (another top-tier site). Responsive and reliable — good communication in English, German, Swedish.

03
Sea Bees Diving
Ao Chalong (near Chalong Pier)

PADI 5-Star Gold Palm IDC — the highest PADI certification. German-founded, extremely professional. Excellent for technical diving (nitrox, trimix) and dive courses. Their Chalong base is conveniently located near the pier. Also good for disabled divers — they have adaptive diving programmes.

04
Blue Dive Phuket
Rawai / Nai Harn

Best Snorkeling Spots in Phuket

You don't need any certification to snorkel. Most beaches rent gear for ฿100–200/day. Here are the spots worth your time:

Beach Snorkeling (No Boat Needed)

  • Kata Noi Beach — The rocky headland at the south end has decent reef. Best at low tide in calm season. About 10 minutes from Kata town.
  • Nai Harn Beach — The bay's southern rocks shelter good coral. Popular with Rawai/Nai Harn expats — easy access, good parking.
  • Freedom Beach — Near Patong but far quieter. Short boat taxi from Patong beach (฿100). Clear turquoise water with fish from the first metre.
  • Laem Promthep — The cape area has rocky entries but excellent fish variety. Bring your own gear — no rentals nearby.

Snorkeling Day Trips (Boat Required)

  • Racha Yai (Raya Island) — The best snorkeling in Phuket's immediate area. Day-trip boats depart Chalong Pier from 08:00. ฿1,200–2,000 pp including equipment and lunch.
  • Phi Phi Islands — 1.5 hours south. More touristy now, but the water around Phi Phi Leh (Maya Bay) is still beautiful when the tide is right. Speed boats: ฿1,800–2,800 pp.
  • Koh Bon & Koh Hae (Coral Island) — Short speed boat from Rawai. Good for families with children. ฿600–800 pp from Rawai beach.
🌊 Rip Current Awareness

Phuket's west coast beaches get rip currents during monsoon season (May–October). Even on calm days at Kata or Nai Harn, check with lifeguards before snorkeling. Yellow flag = caution; red flag = no swimming. Rips pull you sideways — swim parallel to the beach, not against the current, to escape.

Don't Dive Without Dive Insurance

Standard expat health plans often exclude decompression illness treatment and evacuation. Make sure your policy covers hyperbaric treatment. Get covered before you get in the water.

Frequently Asked Questions

November to April is peak diving season — calm seas, 20–30m visibility, water around 28–30°C. The Andaman Sea's clearest conditions are typically January to March. May to October brings monsoon swells, but dive shops still run trips to sheltered east-coast sites.
A PADI Open Water Diver course costs ฿12,000–16,000 at reputable Chalong and Karon dive shops. This typically includes 3–4 days of training, pool sessions, and 4 open water dives. Budget shops in Patong may go lower; avoid providers who skip the academic component.
Yes. During May to October monsoon season, experienced dive shops run trips to sheltered sites off the east coast (Shark Point, Anemone Reef, King Cruiser Wreck) which remain diveable. The Similan Islands close May 15–October 15 by national park rule.
Bangkok Hospital Phuket in Phuket Town has the closest hyperbaric (recompression) chamber. Phone: 076-254425. If you suspect decompression sickness, go immediately — do not wait to see if symptoms improve. Serious DCS cases may need evacuation to Bangkok.
No qualification is needed to snorkel. You can hire mask, fins and snorkel at most beaches for ฿100–200/day. Best snorkeling beaches accessible without a boat: Kata Noi, Nai Harn, Freedom Beach (Patong). For Racha Yai and offshore reefs, join day-trip boats from Chalong Pier.
